'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Player and manager 'latest'

The Quay has come up with two interesting 'links' today, or at least built on them with something new on John Utaka and more on the Roberto Mancini to become the new Pompey manager latest...

Utaka has said that he wants to see out his contract at Fratton but is it said that Lille have 'tabled a bid in the region of £4 million to capture the Nigerian winger.'

I know people say we should give the guy another chance but 'if' we have really been offered £4m, then a 'mere' £3m loss on our investment would not be so bad - so, I would say 'take it' to be honest...

As for Mancini the 'reports' on him becoming our new manager have steadily increased with it today said by The Quay that 'Roberto Mancini is understood to have held talks with prospective new Pompey owner Sulaiman Al-Fahim and Executive Chairman Peter Storrie about becoming the club's new manager.'

It is 'said' that the Italian 'met with representatives of Pompey in Paris this week,' some that the 'word on the streets' is backing up - although this talk could also be very wrong!

To be honest I do not know what to believe anymore, he is not a man that I expected, or even expect to take over to be honest - but I would not say no and further 'word on the street' is these rumours could well have some legs? Again though, these could be very wrong!

As always, and on both issues, time will tell...

I pray to the gods that both of these are true!!!

£4 million for Utaka .. yeah I think I'd take it .. but would like the guy to stay and do well but just can't see it ... Shame really he's a nice bloke.. As for Mancini I read a couple of biogs of his earlier tonight and must say I'm impressed .. he knows how to win cups that's for sure.. Basically Inter only got rid because of his inability to win the Champions League.. I think I'd take him like a shot all things considered.. He'd also bring a bit of charisma to Fratton ..

My wife thinks he's 'lovely' too .. so it's as good as deal done then really !

I can't put any logic or sound argument behind it, but Mancini always felt like the most plausible of all the stories going around about our next manager. I don't know much about him, and clearly the complete lack of PL experience is a concern, but when you look at his recent track record, he's got a lot more going for him than Sven "Mexico used to be half-decent till I took over" Eriksson or a manager like Bilic who has no experience at all outside of international management.

Really not sure on Utaka, on most appearances this season (albeit he was on the wing) he did my head in and I would have got shot, however the last two games when he played in his favoured position up front, he impressed me and I would probably give him another bite at the cherry based upon that. Mancini, yes please, three times winner of the scudetto and only dismissed because he didn't win Champ League. Well hey, if he got us to a position to even be in the CL that would do me.

Does anyone know the standard of Mancini's English? I know Jamie's Dad barely spoke any English, but it was a start at least. The drums are beating quite loud for this one. A big name for sure. Suited to little Pompey? Not quite so sure. Would be cautious about Utaka going. Not the world's best, but equally a good option when you only have 15 first-team players!

Since all things Italian are flavour of the month, let's hope he does a good job for us & brings the talent with him!

Top class manager, but obviously has never done it in the premier league, although nor had Jose with Chelsea before he went there. Could all depend on the size of the transfer kitty given to the new manager. With money I think Mancini will be a good manager to have.

I think John needs a new start. He has showed moments of promise but delivered too little in his time here. It often seemed to be his confidence that was the main problem and at FP he’ll never get a fair crack or support off of the boo boys now. So I say cash in on him! As for Roberto, if this is all to be believed, then he may just turn out to be our signing of the summer and a massive statement of intent from the club. Best option for me, absoulute class.

Inter Milan are reputedley paying him over £5m net a year as part of his pay off for sacking him, 'garden leave'. He would lose that once he took another job!!!

So are we all assuming SAF, and buying Pompey is a done deal? In what seems the most drawn out DD in history are SAFS repesentatives head hunting Mancini? Don't you all wonder why Scummers sell their club in 48 hours to a Swiss Billionaire, and Mike Ashley can get almost get it done in less than a week when he gets an interested party. Is it that SAF's lawyers are still unravelling Storrie and the Blood Hounds past deals? Is it that when SAF'S DD is over he is going to announce a new Manager and string of new players so we can hit the platform from day one.
