Summer Toast # 4 - Birthday over back to business

Summer Toast # 4 - Birthday over back to business

Entertainment Sports Programming Network

For the uninitiated that is the full name of ESPN. They have just obtained the licence for 23 games Premier league next season. A new channel will soon be available on Sky, Virgin and BT Vision. Because of the size of their investment they will need to publicise quickly to recoup their outgoing.

Meanwhile, Setanta UK plunge towards Administration and extinction unless they are rescued. Setanta tried to run a UK arm with no experience and become a rival to Sky for the subscription of viewers. ESPN is much bigger but again has no UK experience will they try to rival Sky or work in tandem with them?

Thanks Johnno

When Glen Johnson signed for Pompey on loan three years ago I clearly remember telling fans that he was not a washed up kid but I predicted he would go on to win 50 caps for England!!

Few believed me then and after a few less than average when he clearly did not have his mind on the job in hand but I stood strong. Then he was caught in possession in the opposing half and goals were conceded but I did not waiver. He returned to Chelsea and I was sad to see him go only to be snatched back for in my mind an absolute steal at £4million and I was happy.

Other fans asked what do we want that ****** back for? I said you wait and see. As the season progressed his performances gradually improved and the goal he got at Wigan to me was the turning point, all be it with his left foot too!! Funny how many of his goals he scored with left foot.

Then we win the FA Cup, he is back in the England squad and now player of the season many times over. We sell him for (a reported) £17.5miilion to Liverpool and he is England`s right back for years to come!!

Listen to the man!! (Who said that?) And thanks Glen for proving me right. Sadly will miss him playing right in front of me but Janice can take over the mantle.

For the uninitiated Janice is the name the North Terrace have given to Younes Kaboul.

Remember to click on the player`s to link to the Pompeyrama stats. Yes Pompeyrama is back and running after a glitch last week as Phil told me 'I must remember to pay the bill next time` Oh dear Phil, we missed you.

29th June

Colin Garwood is 60. Favourite with many fans in the late seventies. Was top scorer in both seasons Pompey spent in the fourth division even though he was sold to Aldershot before the end of the promotion year.

30th June

Lee Power is 37

3rd July

Lee Bradbury is 34

Paul Hall is 37

4th July

Terry Brisley is 59. Far post Brisley scored twelve goals from midfield in the 79/80 promotion season.

John Ashworth is 72. Played only one game at centre half in 1962/63.

Hermann's birthday party

Well it now less than two weeks away until the summer get together at the Eastney Taven. We are now calling it the Hermann Hreidarsson birthday party especially as the Hermannator has signed a new one year contract.

Herman if you are out there come and join us. We know he is on Facebook so perhaps one of you Facebook users can try and make contact with him. As the team will have just started pre-season training it is unlikely he will be able to attend but we should invite him.

The event at 100 Cromwell Road Eastney starts at 7.30 and the Toast team will be producing a special edition in full colour for all Vital members that attend. A full menu is available for those wanting food.

Turning the tables

Well Vital have now reset the Premier League table and we are now 14th where we finished last season by coincidence. Who would settle for finishing there?

Have you been watching Wimbledon this week and have you been impressed by the speed and the use of hawkeye? Yes we are back to an old subject of TV replays and if they work at Wimbledon then they can certainly work in the multi billion dollar Premier League.

The answer to last week`s teaser about the 2008/09 Dutch Champions was AZ67. stfc bellboy got it right. Formed 1967 AZ have now won the title twice, they play in Arsenal colours.

This weeks teaser is who did Pompey sign Colin Garwood from?

Fortress Fratton?

Al Fresco was creeping around Fratton Park last week and discovered more work going on than we are being told about. Deep down in the South Stand things are happening. Washing Machines are being moved and Kit man Kev looks very unhappy.

Well we all know that one of the main factors behind the reputation Fortress Fratton is the size of the visitors dressing room BUT it is being extended!! They have taken out the toilets in the Chimes Bar to do this. These toilets have been relocated to where the split level is.

All this work has meant that Kev the Kitman`s room has gone upstairs and the Washing machines have been left in the South Stand. A couple of lucky season ticket holders will soon be able to do their washing while watching their favourites!! Some wag suggested it might be better that watching some of the performances under Alain Perrin!!

There are rumours also that the Premier League may have 'requested` that the changing room be big enough for a team, seven substitutes and the hangers on etc. Will they still be painted every week Toast asks?

Dave, I agree about the 'Hawkeye' thing, and they have a limited number of challenges per match each, which could work in football too. The amount of important decisions refs get wrong is shocking, its about time someone took it seriously and used 21st century technology. Instead they come up with stupid ideas like the 39th game and trying to stop fans making noise in the confederations cup.

Morning Toast team ... a good read as always and I must admit I never knew what ESPN stood for (can you get it on freeview-top-up?). As for Johnno I have to (also) admit that I was one of the doubters especially towards the end of his loan spell .. he just didn't lookl interested .. should've listened to you Dave ;)... oh and Colin Garwood came from Colchester .. didn't he ?

i wasnt convinced by johnson i must admit, i confessed as much in an article i wrote last week, you do not mind me including a link to it do here...
finally, still not sure i agree with toast tho that janice is the man to take the right back spot next season, i still see this as almost wasting his talent and ability?
28/06/2009 10:15:00
Yes - I'm sure it was Colchester.

Good Evening Toast. Got up very late this morning and then went to the New Forest, so have been absent all day. Happy Birtday for last Thursday, (I never forgot, afterall). Setanta deserve to go bust, their service was c r a p! Had a couple of run-ins with them. Hope ESPN can do a better job. Are you serious that we have to paint the visitors changing room each game? Why? Love to see everybody's face if Herman turned up at the ET!!!!!!
