'If It's Football, It's Vital'

If its not one thing its another!

If its not 'Pompey's proposed takeover by Dr SAF' being torn apart left, right and centre, our 'financial position broadcast to the world' or 'a player exodus' its something else...

This 'something else' today sees the return of something that has been on the simmer for some time - the Jermain Defoe transfer to Pompey, and how 'legal' this actually was?

The signing always has been 'within the rules', it is just the people that dealt with this that might not have been...

In what is billed as 'an exclusive' to The Mirror today it is 'said' that Pompey and Spurs face the prospect of being docked points if it is proven that the little mans move to Pompey saw a deal take place with any influence of 'an unlicensed agent.'

Although that said the title of The Mirrors article 'Points deduction threat for Tottenham over Jermain Defoe agent row,' suggests this could be a one-way thing? But 'big questions' will be asked apparently of both?

Defoe said at the time that he conducted the transfer himself after 'getting rid' of his agent Sky Andrews, who has always questioned the deal - obviously the guy is unhappy that his client dumped him and I guess is unhappy at the prospect of losing money, but when all is said and done 'if' it is proven that an 'unlicensed agent' was used then rules have been breached and punishment will be dished out, to all concerned.

Andrews was 'yesterday granted High Court permission to obtain phone records for agent Stuart Peters and his associate, unlicensed agent Mitchell Thomas' - I guess this is the Mitchell Thomas of Spurs and West Ham fame? If these phone records prove anything then, and as The Mirror put it, 'England star Jermain Defoe is facing a potentially explosive further legal probe into his high-profile 7.5million transfer to Fratton Park'...

Again, and until anything is proven all are innocent - although of course as far as most of the media will be concerned Pompey will be guilty, we are always guilty! - if an unlicensed agent is found to have been used then, and I am not trying to worry anyone, a points penalty is possible?

Luton were docked 10pts for using 'unlicensed agents' in 2008, so there is not chance Spurs and Pompey (I guess), and morally should not, avoid a penalty? Although the key thing in that incident is the use of 'agents' and not 'agent' like it is this time, this case appears to be singular and not plural as was the case with Luton...

No doubt we will be hearing plenty more on this matter!

Oh, and please just in case people are even thinking about it, lets not come on here and start spouting rubbish that 'Pompey are clearly guilty and it cannot be anything to do with Spurs' and to be fair 'Spurs are guilty it cannot be Pompey' as this would then clearly turn this into a 'slagging match' - none of us know 'facts' do we so lets just wait and see what the 'facts' are first eh...

i was delighted when JD joined pompey, i had always wanted the guy at fratton and always maintained that hope we would get him! things started fantastically well for him, but then his 'true nature' shone through and he showed himself for what he really was - it turned into a nightmare in the end really didnt it, lets just hope this isnt going to get any worse...
time will tell what will happen here, the guilty will be found out and puished tho.

Need this like a hole in the head. Totally oblivious to it until I read a post by pentonpompey in the forum. I'm just wondering now if all this sort of stuff is being hawked over during DD. The last thing either PFC or Spuds need is a points deduction at the start of the new season, along with all the press derision that will go with it.

Well Spurs fans obviously don't read the Mirror. Popped over there expecting all hell to have let loose, but they don't even seem to know about it yet. If it turns out we lose 10 points for the Dwarf, his short stay here will have cost us dear.

You are right Corny. I thought about how this would affect the DD, but I think is is too late in the day to worry about now, we are over four weeks down the line now and looking at the other end. Oh and the press are going to have a field day with us.

'if' any pts penalties are dished out then i wouldnt have thought they would be 10pt penalties tbh - the 10pts for luton was for use of 'unlicensed agents' not 'agent' so several cases i guess not the one...

Football is becoming far too complicated nowadays!!!! Why can't transfers ever be simple.

Wonder how many points they are talking? 10 you reckon? Wow, that is tough. Would help Villa though so every cloud and all that (sorry chaps, only joking, came to read the article and couldn't resist!) Bet it won't happen, not with a London club involved, they'll not want to upset them now will they?!

I can't say i was pleased when defoe signed, and I was certainly pleased when he left. I don't understand the whole transfer thing, however I see no advantage in using an "unlisensed" agent... so i'll assume pompey have done nothing wrong.

it wouldnt be as much as 10pts, if it is any pts - altho, and im not totally going against what i said in the article, it does actually appear as tho the suggetion actually is spurs 'could' be the ones facing this pts penalty 'if' it did happen?
that is just reading between the lines of what the orginal reports says mind...

This comment isn't specifically about Defoe. If the proposed takeover takes place (god how long a month is) I suggest that the new owner gets the Club a very good PR manager. Everything about the Club is negative at the moment. You dont see Man U. et al letting thes stories escalate without a proffessional response. Lets hope Saf gets the club, and repositions us so that we are in control of matters rather than the mess we get into under the current leadership.

I had mixed feelings when we signed Defoe, especially as it cost us Benji, who was our leading scorer at the time. I remember it hadn't all gone through come midnight, and the next morning I was actually pleased, I thought we'd end up keeping Benji after all, but Storrie and twitchy-face pushed it through - and with hindsight it all turned sour, except for Pompey making money on the whole thing - now it's looking like it could be a very very bad move, starting to really wish that Defoe hadn't thrown his toys out the pram and left his beloved Spurs in the first place.

Well that is the end of Steve C for a while then and I wish I could say the same for this rubbish the press insists on trying to drag up. The only good news on this is Spurs are in more trouble than Pompey over this.
