If its not 'Pompey's proposed takeover by Dr SAF' being torn apart left, right and centre, our 'financial position broadcast to the world' or 'a player exodus' its something else...
This 'something else' today sees the return of something that has been on the simmer for some time - the Jermain Defoe transfer to Pompey, and how 'legal' this actually was?
The signing always has been 'within the rules', it is just the people that dealt with this that might not have been...
In what is billed as 'an exclusive' to The Mirror today it is 'said' that Pompey and Spurs face the prospect of being docked points if it is proven that the little mans move to Pompey saw a deal take place with any influence of 'an unlicensed agent.'
Although that said the title of The Mirrors article 'Points deduction threat for Tottenham over Jermain Defoe agent row,' suggests this could be a one-way thing? But 'big questions' will be asked apparently of both?
Defoe said at the time that he conducted the transfer himself after 'getting rid' of his agent Sky Andrews, who has always questioned the deal - obviously the guy is unhappy that his client dumped him and I guess is unhappy at the prospect of losing money, but when all is said and done 'if' it is proven that an 'unlicensed agent' was used then rules have been breached and punishment will be dished out, to all concerned.
Andrews was 'yesterday granted High Court permission to obtain phone records for agent Stuart Peters and his associate, unlicensed agent Mitchell Thomas' - I guess this is the Mitchell Thomas of Spurs and West Ham fame? If these phone records prove anything then, and as The Mirror put it, 'England star Jermain Defoe is facing a potentially explosive further legal probe into his high-profile £7.5million transfer to Fratton Park'...
Again, and until anything is proven all are innocent - although of course as far as most of the media will be concerned Pompey will be guilty, we are always guilty! - if an unlicensed agent is found to have been used then, and I am not trying to worry anyone, a points penalty is possible?
Luton were docked 10pts for using 'unlicensed agents' in 2008, so there is not chance Spurs and Pompey (I guess), and morally should not, avoid a penalty? Although the key thing in that incident is the use of 'agents' and not 'agent' like it is this time, this case appears to be singular and not plural as was the case with Luton...
No doubt we will be hearing plenty more on this matter!
Oh, and please just in case people are even thinking about it, lets not come on here and start spouting rubbish that 'Pompey are clearly guilty and it cannot be anything to do with Spurs' and to be fair 'Spurs are guilty it cannot be Pompey' as this would then clearly turn this into a 'slagging match' - none of us know 'facts' do we so lets just wait and see what the 'facts' are first eh...
