'I would like to see Younes Kaboul replace Glen Johnson at right back', not my vote, yours - although these findings from stfc ballboy's poll are thoughts that I do not really agree with to be honest...
Problem is I am not convinced that Kaboul, Martin Cranie or Marc Wilson are right back material over the course of a season!
For me, I still see Kaboul as a powerful ball playing central defending and that would allow us to play football from the back - yep, he can play as a right back, and do this well but I still think that he is a central defender, and has the makings of a very, very good one so in a way I see him being wasted at right back...
Cranie, yep, seems the most natural right back seen as he plays there for England at U21 level and has played the for us and during his time on loan with Charlton, he also thinks he is the man to replace Johnson as he told The News: 'obviously there's an opportunity at right-back now and I am hoping to get my chance and show what I can do. I am not going to say too much at the moment. I'm just going to get my head down and work hard when pre-season starts.
'All I can do is show what I can do when pre-season starts and take it from there. I'm going to get my head down, roll up my sleeves and work hard - that's all I can do.'
I like what he is saying, and if he does knuckle down good luck to him, my problem is I think that he too is destined to be a central defender, and although I want him to make it at Pompey I am not totally convinced he will to tell the truth - since his injury I have lost some of the faith I had in him, and I thought he was destined for big things before his leg break during his time with QPR on loan...
Wilson, I rate the guy, and think he has a big part to play in our future - well I at least hope he does! I liked what I saw last season and he did the right back role when asked, but yet again I am not sure he is a right back, offensively I think the guy is fantastic but defensively I am not sure? Some think he will make a central defender but I am thinking midfield, maybe sitting in front of the back four is the role for him in the long-term?
It is possible of course that we could well see all 3 play at the same time?
Kaboul in central defence, Cranie at right back and Wilson at right midfield - it is feasible, if not that likely...
So, in conclusion I am none the wiser who I think could play at right back, but we are committing suicide if we contemplate Aaron Mokoena or Hayden Mullins as our right back!
Methinks a new signing is most likely? But not Tyrone 'I am suddenly a world-beater' Mears! Although thankfully this seems unlikely as he looks set for Burnley, phew...
