Kaboul is the 'right' man...

Kaboul is the 'right' man...

'I would like to see Younes Kaboul replace Glen Johnson at right back', not my vote, yours - although these findings from stfc ballboy's poll are thoughts that I do not really agree with to be honest...

Problem is I am not convinced that Kaboul, Martin Cranie or Marc Wilson are right back material over the course of a season!

For me, I still see Kaboul as a powerful ball playing central defending and that would allow us to play football from the back - yep, he can play as a right back, and do this well but I still think that he is a central defender, and has the makings of a very, very good one so in a way I see him being wasted at right back...

Cranie, yep, seems the most natural right back seen as he plays there for England at U21 level and has played the for us and during his time on loan with Charlton, he also thinks he is the man to replace Johnson as he told The News: 'obviously there's an opportunity at right-back now and I am hoping to get my chance and show what I can do. I am not going to say too much at the moment. I'm just going to get my head down and work hard when pre-season starts.

'All I can do is show what I can do when pre-season starts and take it from there. I'm going to get my head down, roll up my sleeves and work hard - that's all I can do.'

I like what he is saying, and if he does knuckle down good luck to him, my problem is I think that he too is destined to be a central defender, and although I want him to make it at Pompey I am not totally convinced he will to tell the truth - since his injury I have lost some of the faith I had in him, and I thought he was destined for big things before his leg break during his time with QPR on loan...

Wilson, I rate the guy, and think he has a big part to play in our future - well I at least hope he does! I liked what I saw last season and he did the right back role when asked, but yet again I am not sure he is a right back, offensively I think the guy is fantastic but defensively I am not sure? Some think he will make a central defender but I am thinking midfield, maybe sitting in front of the back four is the role for him in the long-term?

It is possible of course that we could well see all 3 play at the same time?

Kaboul in central defence, Cranie at right back and Wilson at right midfield - it is feasible, if not that likely...

So, in conclusion I am none the wiser who I think could play at right back, but we are committing suicide if we contemplate Aaron Mokoena or Hayden Mullins as our right back!

Methinks a new signing is most likely? But not Tyrone 'I am suddenly a world-beater' Mears! Although thankfully this seems unlikely as he looks set for Burnley, phew...

  • What the poll asked - Who would you like to see replace Glen Johnson??

  • How you voted - Younes Kaboul 36%, Martin Cranie 33%, Another signing 20%, Marc Wilson 6%, Gianni Zuiverloon 5%

Before we move on what are your thoughts on what the last poll concluded? You know what to do, thoughts below please guys...

Kaboul is a CD or maybe DM but in no way a f***ing right back you are wasting his talents there. [Edited by rug]

    did you read the article?
ive said that i felt talent was being wasted at right back...
    26/06/2009 07:59:00
Yes Mr Rug I read the article, my response was for the attention of all Pompey fans while also agreeing with your comments.

I think that, having seen kaboul play right back for us last season, he probably did offer us the best option out of those in the poll. However, when your voting on something like that, it might be quite easy to also say that kaboul would be the best choice centre back. Sadeley though, we only have one of him.
    26/06/2009 08:09:00
sorry my bad :-) oh, and the edit wasnt taking anything out it was just to edit a 'rude' word, which wasnt filtered out as it should have been.
    26/06/2009 08:09:00
Yeah agree rug, I voted for Cranie as I like the look of the lad in the right back position and more importantly his attitude. We may not have £50m pound individuals but, a team full of players like him with passion and desire then we will be alright.
    26/06/2009 08:13:00
I agree that Kaboul would make a great CB but could we have 2 ball playing CBs or could Distin step up and be the rock as campbell has been? Think we need to look for a right back but would prefer Wilson from those we currently have.
    26/06/2009 08:26:00
Kaboul offers a lot going forward, but unless we buy another centre back (we will though, right?) then we won't have any choice but to play someone else at right-back. I thought Wilson delivered a great diagonal ball into the box, and Cranie looks very promising. Not a bad situation to be in, even if we are a couple of seasons away from these guys being properly up-to-speed.

Kaboul must break into the French side soon and probably at right back. He is a defender not a midfield player but a good foptballer to boot. For Pompey he might settle at CB with Cranie at RB - but with Johnno gone we are lucky to have two such players available to breach the huge gap left.
    26/06/2009 09:31:00
Agree there Dave. I was feeling a little anxious about the void left by Glen's departure, but am more at ease now with both Kaboul and Cranie able and willing to step into the breach. We still don't know who's going to be brought in to beef up the defence, but I feel we'll be ok.
