Owen a serious option?

Yep I know that Michael Owen has had terrible injury problems in recent years and has spent more time out injured than actually playing but 'if' he could stay injury free are we really thinking that he would not be worth 'a punt?'

I know a few of us in the forum are more than open to this and I would say 'why not!'

If, and with all due respect, the likes of Hull and maybe even Wolves could be serious options for him surely Pompey could/would be an option too, right?

The problem we have is with a little level of uncertainty still surrounding the club - although this has hopefully been made clearer with the latest developments - we cannot move for him, and even if we could would he commit without knowing what sort of secured future we have, right...

I really do think there would be a chance that the guy would sign for us you know, we have proven that we can rejuvenate careers, taking players that seems washed up and/or done and breathed new life into them.

We know that Fabio Capello approves of players playing for Pompey so this would not harm his England chances, although these England chances are pretty much non-existent at the moment!

We could maybe breath new life into his England career too?

There is 'a good chance' that we will be looking to strike up the little and large pairing again next season and with Owen and Peter Crouch having already proven at international level that they can play together this has the makings of a fantastic pairing for Pompey.

I know it is a risk, I know it is a gamble, but as that old saying goes 'he who dares wins' and if we dare, which we may very well do, I reckon we could well win!

The guy wants to play in the premier league if he can, if he hangs fire and weighs up all his options, if we are in a position to offer him something - and the massive wages he is on at the barcodes will not be matched by anyone! - then we could be onto something here. Hopefully this takeover will be complete, and we bring in a manager that is willing to take this risk, before he commits elsewhere...

I would be more than happy if we could bring in a fully fit and able Michael Owen...wouldn't you?

Crouch could be the deciding factor imo. Owen would be looking to kick-start his England career and I think showing that he plays well with another England striker would be brilliant like it was for Judas Jermain.

Definately worth a shot, if he stays injury free. I think that is the worry for any club thinking about buying him, but if he stays fit and is given a run of games his goalscoring record speaks for itself and i think he could be a great signing.

Some good points there Rug. Injuries aside, Owen is still a name that commands respect in football and I'm sure Capello would be delighted if he could get his career back on track. He hasn't quite got the pace he used to have but a pairing with Crouchie and his flick ons could really pay dividends. So yes, a punt on Owen is definitely worth a shot...

I was saying this very same thing to a hammer friend of mine yesterday. We do seem to have this ability to ressurect players flagging England careers, hopefully this takeover will show we've real ambition and we'll soon have the cash for his wages. I think we're a real option for him. Time will tell.

if he doesnt play though, that is such a waste of money every week. If we sign him, i hope they undertake a medical.
nodster
Certainly worth a punt if we can get him on a play and pay basis
UKTony
put him on a smallish wage with large sums everytime he actually plays and i'd say yes but otherwise the injuries are just too much to risk in my opinion, i'd rather take obefemi martins off newcastles hands :D

for me money isnt the issue for owen - playing and proving a point is, he will be desperate to play at the world cup next summer, and we 'might' offer him the platform to do this, if he stays fit...
if we can get in before he commits somewhere else i think we could well see owen in a pompey shirt next season...
pompeyrug
Probably past his best but worth a shot on a Pay as you Play contract and a free transfer...more interested in his Horses these days though.

Would he come this far south? Some merit in the pay/play idea. Until we have anew manager, heaven only knows what lies in store.

Matt isn't Madrid even further south? We have Goodwood, Ascot, Epsom, Fontwell, Newbury, Salisbury, Cheltenham, Lambourn all within an hours Helli ride away...What better way to sell it to the equine crock!

Stoke now also intrested in him, I like martins too pompeym@ a real worker & could benifit Crouch too

Owen is a legendary player, but his injury record is very poor. It depends if we can afford now to risk having a player who might not play, perhaps we can. As for getting him to come to the club, I know he's really good mates with Jamo from their Liverpool days, so he might persuade him to come here! And Owen has a good record of scoring past Jamo as well (or did until a season or so ago), it would stop that happening.

I'd be happy to have him here, certainly worth a go with him and Crouchy up front.

Completely agree Rug. They would make an awesome tandem at the right price. I just can't get that world cup game out of my head when he tumbled to the ground just a few minutes after kick off without even being near an opposing player. He still seems to have quite a bit left in the tank but has lost a step, but as you say, " he who doesn't dare..."
Toronto4Pompey
I want Owen at Pompey. He is eager to start over and he still has alot to offer. He smashed us apart when we played them at Fratton last season!
