Pompey kick-off at Fratton against Fulham

So, the fixtures for the 2009/10 season have been confirmed and we now know we kick-off against Fulham at Fratton.

Unfortunately greed runs the game so without a payment, which we simply cannot afford or justify to make - 250 plus vat - we at Vital Pompey, or anyone on the network for that matter, are not allowed to publish the full fixture lists for the coming season...

This, despite the fact that we pay so much for the 'privilege' of following football that we already do! More is demanded from us to simply list fixtures, which is not something that can be justified at what is demanded, sorry asked... This is also despite the fact that a new European Court of Justice ruling should put pay to the charging for fixture lists; unfortunately no one is in the financial position to challenge the leagues at present!

It is a joke - but not a joke that we can laugh at...

You can of course view the full fixture list on the Pompey Site, as I am sure you already have/will.

I can mention a couple standout dates though, well what I class as standout - that is not something that they can fleece us for, or complain about, although perhaps they will?

The first Fratton game is of course the opener against Fulham, with our first away trip being against Birmingham, who of course return to the premier league this season, a week later. Boxing Day is always a date that we look to with anticipation and this season we are on our travels to face West Ham, a regular occurrence!

I must confess that the first fixture I did look for was Spurs at Fratton, and to a lesser extent, seen as I did this last season, the meeting at White Hart Lane - although I feel I could be 'pushing my luck' to publish these dates, even by month alone, so I will 'quit whilst I am ahead!' We have all looked and all know when those dates are, particularly the one that will see Jamie's Dad return to Fratton...

Of course by the time TV has had its say countless numbers of fixtures, as released, could change and many most likely will, not to mention when we play teams in the Europa cup meaning switches to Sunday again - but at the moment those are standout dates for my diary and I await the kick-off the 2009/10 season against Fulham, get in there!

We now know where we start and finish; we just need to know who will be our owner, manager and who will be left from the current playing staff! All of which can, and hopefully will, be decided in the not to distant future.

Despite admittedly being pretty pleased at the end of the 2008/09 season that it was over I soon started to eagerly await the new campaign, and not because of the takeover talk, because I love Pompey, I enjoy the travelling and I enjoy the meeting with my mates before, during and after games, even if I cannot promote these dates - roll on August...

Rug - it's a joke isn't it. Can't believe that you're not allowed to publish the fixture lists in full. Surely though the forums is somewhere they can be posted if you post them in a way that it's a 'discussion'. For example: "I am going to go to _____ on _____". Makes my blood boil!!!

Hammers Boxing day sticks out for me. MR Race says we will be home for this
race
i would guess so Gino so long as we do not list the fixtures there isnt anything to stop us discussing fixtures here or in the forum, so spurs at fratton 17th october...
pompeyrug
End of Dec looks tough. Hopefully we will get to two games and the FA cup fixture
race
Fixture list out. Time to plan my life around it. Family, holiday, work etc to be carefully woven. No doubt I will have to pay in other ways to get to all the home games.

december will be tough - but we always struggle then anyway. our last 8 games look fairly good, so if we are in a relegation scrap, we have a chance to pull ourselves out of it, and our first few games arn't that bad, so hopefully we won't be too troubled by the fact we will likely still be bringing players in.
pompeycarpet
Accepting there are no easy games, paricularly with a team in flux the spread is about the best for a few years.
russellm
Don't fancy Birmingham as our second match. They will be up for it - hopefully, so will we!
Gandor1
December generally looks horrible; let's hope we're safe by then :)
UKTony
Agree with Russell - it is a good spread except for late December. Need four points from first two games though.

Let's put it this way...it could be an awful lot worse. Hopefully by the time we get to the first match we'll be up and running, well, sort of anyway. A chance to ease ourselves into the new season.

I can't believe you'd have to pay to print the fixtures - how ridiculous! I'm glad the fixtures are out, its probably going to take me an hour to put them all in phone. Won't be able to make West Ham away cos boxing day is always a difficult one family wise, but for that reason I'm glad it's not a home game.

Away games are a bit of farce, we start with all the midland games then a few in London and finish off with all the Lancashire trips. Surley a computer can be programmed to try and mix up the length of travelling needed? Then seeing it is the FA they probably don't care too much.
eastneydave
Chelsea away on a tuesday I could do that not to bad for me, how about you Hamersmithblue?
pompeyyong
I'd have thought that a good first game for you guys. At home against what last season was quite a defensive side away. You need a good start and I can't see you losing this one.
Sindbad
dave - there is an article on the BBC about how the fixtures are calculated - it's a good read, and it makes the point that the fixture computer does not take into acount distences. Boxing day fixtures are chosen by hand, to get as close as possible. that's why we normally get arsenal! (although this year, we get them a couple of days later).
pompeycarpet
we have usually been getting west ham, altho have had arsenal around christmas aswell - its more often than not been one or the other for the past 3-4-years at least...
yep, im more than happy to start with fulham and think the first dozen fixtures are fairly kind to us - get in there and bring it on!
pompeyrug
Spurs October 17th, what date did the marvellous Harry Redknapp or the saggy red faced **** depending on your perspective pull up stumps at Pompey, got to be pretty damn close to the anniversery.
TeddyLyon
Lookin forward to our match to start the season. See you boys at the Shepards Crook beforehand :)
