Summer Toast # 2

Summer Toast # 2

Hi Al Fresco here with the second edition of Summer Toast. Same format but some new ideas.

When will the rubbish stop?

All we are hearing from the national press is one slur after another thrown at Dr SAF and it is getting boring now. Links with this person and that are being dredged out claiming he is not fit to own a Premier League.

Of all the comments this week I have picked out this one made by Dr SAF's spokesman who said - 'You have to remember the doctor is already a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations. I would think their vetting process would be just as thorough as anything the Premier League did.'

Johnno ignored

Now it is not often the wife writes my column but this week she insisted in having her say.

'Glen Johnson makes four goals, is awarded man of the match and yet in their post match round up the numpties from ITV sport forget to show any of his wonderful football and great crosses. Instead they focus on Ashley Young and the couple of crosses he put into 'areas defenders don't like defending' Well defenders like it even less when the ball is in the back of their net!!'

And so say all of us

Peter's longevity

When Peter Crouch resigned for Pompey last summer he said he wanted to play regularly. Well little did he know that would be a huge understatement.

The first game of the English season is the Community Shield at Wembley and Peter was there making his second Pompey debut. The final game was on Wednesday with England against Andorra. Peter was there and fittingly by scored the final goal of the season when he slotted in the sixth.

Crouchie did not miss a game in the intervening ten months and is taking a well deserved break before pre season training starts on 9th July He has shown that he is no freak but a hard working footballer who earns his crust.

Fixtures out

Well on Wednesday morning the 2009/10 Premier League fixtures will be published. Then it is dairies out and the planning can begin. Of course once the TV companies get hold of them most will be changed to Monday's at midnight to fit the various schedules.

This season we have lost West Brom, Newcastle and Middlesbrough and gained Wolves, Birmingham and Burnley. The season starts on 15th August and ends with the World Cup Finals to look forward to.

Toast is predicting Burnley away first up with the Christmas present from the fixtures computer being Tottenham at home on Boxing Day!!

Portsmouth, People, Passion, Pride

This is the title of the campaign Portsmouth City Council has officially launched in its bid to become a host city at the FIFA World Cup in 2018 if England succeeds in winning the right to stage the tournament.

At the launch Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson, leader of the council said: "Portsmouth lives and breathes football and the city's name is known all over the world for the passion of its fans."

Peter Storrie, Pompey's executive chairman said: "Portsmouth FC is proud to support the city's bid to become a host venue for the 2018 World Cup. Football fans from all over the world could expect a unique welcome from Portsmouth FC."

The Toast message to the Council is quite clear - agree the location the club, get the necessary infrastructure in place and then build the stadium. We do not need problem with geese or the like, we need action within the democratic process to ensure the stadium is in place well before the summer of 2018 arrives.

Youngster Marc Wilson made quite an impact last season when coming into a struggling side. But against which side did he make his full debut?

Worth watching

Football is on the TV all year round and this next few weeks we have the European U21 championships in Sweden. Some great players have graced this event over the years and the player of the tournament - the Golden Player award has some very famous names on it.

They include Rudi Voller, Laurent Blanc, Davor Suker, Luis Figo, Andrea Pirlo, Peter Cech, Fabio Cannavaro and Klaas Jan Huntelaar. Pity Pompey do not have their new ownership sorted as any manager would love to trawl through the games and try and find another real star.

Summer get together

Well we have told you before but just a reminder that the summer get together is at the Eastney Tavern on Saturday 11th July at 7.30. Food is available and quite a number of members have already indicated they will be there including pompeygray who is travelling all the way from Sydney.

As gray said before leaving Australia 'nothing will stop me from being in the Eastney Tavern, 100 Cromwell Road on 11th July 2009 with food, beer and more importantly great Pompey fans and friendship.'

We will be running more publicity on the event soon and it may be renamed 'Hermann Hreidarsson's birthday party' as the big man will be 35 that day.

The Papers latest panic against pompey not going bust are as follows. 1. Hydra-one of the board is a brother of the Sheik who owns Man City. Well a) Dr SAF has already stated that the PFC investment is not a HYDRA project..unless he's a Liar, but surely unless this guy had invested himself in Citeh he should not be void from investing in PFC. 2. The Dr..Wait for not a REAL DOCTOR....well for me that realy blows the roof off the fit and decent person test...United nations rep or not.... Murky..Murky thats what i say... 2.

intresting quetion this: with the takeover coming in, Al Fahim says he will become chairman. If johnson isn't sold before he takes charge, will he then be able to veto his sale?
14/06/2009 09:00:00
Looking forward to the fixtures coming out as you say Dave time to start planning. Graham I herd that to on TV source being the Gaurdian, Doctor said hydra has nothing to do with Portsmouth two weeks ago.
14/06/2009 09:51:00
Carpet sadly the way Storie was talking is that the Doctor is allready aware of Johnson's position, I would still love to keep him so would Crouch as now he wants talks over his future
14/06/2009 09:56:00
Carps I might be wrong, but I think Johnno has one of those conditions in his contract where the club have to let him go for offers over a certain amount, I've heard £12m. Also it sounds like the deal with have gone through before the due diligence is finished.
14/06/2009 09:57:00
I'm sick of our treatment in the press too - unfortunately Dr SAF will have to get used to it if he's going to be involved in Pompey. I'm sure he's man enough to take it. Johnson will get so much more positive media attention if he's a Liverpool or Chelski player - you'll see!
14/06/2009 09:58:00
Morning guys...Well I'm afraid I'm still walking around like a bear with a sore head over the Johnson sale/saga. Take a look at CHELSEA VITAL, the remarks concerning him coming to them are almost 100% negative. Mind you, they all seem to be fishing in the dark regarding him coming back to them. Carpet, bring on the VETO!!!
14/06/2009 10:31:00
Cannot believe what the press will do to get a story. Have to say I am very rattled and admire you all for being so calm about it all, even tho what they are dragging up looks like crap. Why do they do it? Anyway, well done Toast again, love the deckchair! We should put that elsewhere on the site, give the place a holiday feel!

Four defeats in five came to an end at the weekend as Pompey won at Oldham. Victory was great, but the decision to drop Christian Burgess was a main talking point ahead of this game.
