The Pompey Chimes: 1st-8th June 2009

Welcome to the Pompey Chimes - the definitive guide to the past week in the world of Pompey.

Club News

No rest for the wicked, as the season as ended and most football fans turn their attention to cricket, Pompey fans still have eyes firmly clasped on goings on at Fratton Park as Dr SAF visited this week. He looked like he enjoyed himself, and sporting a Portsmouth cap took time out to listen to the fans. Read all about that, here.

Amid reports that Dr SAF is going to back out of the deal, he did take a moment to reaffirm his commitment to us, and you can read about that here.

Those of you who have not booked your summer holidays, and missed out on the trip to Guimaraes in the UEFA Cup will have one more chance to go and see Pompey play in Europe as they play in a mini-tournament over two days in Guimaraes. For info, click here.

Check out the PFC Official Site as well for a video montage of the best bits of 2008/2009 season - they've done well to find any in my opinion!!

Squad News

Pompey's managerial position is still unclear, and early this past week Italian manager Roberto Mancini decided to put himself in the frame for the Pompey job. Read all about the former Inter manager's thoughts here.

Glen Johnson has been subject to much transfer speculation this year, and so it comes as no surprise to hear that he's been linked with a move to former club Chelsea. Will he go? Who knows, but read all about Chelsea's plans here. There's also a little bit in there about Distin going to Liverpool.

Speaking of Liverpool, Johnson has always been linked to them as well! Well, Liverpool are gearing up for a pathetic £10m offer for Johnson - check out the details here.

Peter Crouch has also been linked to a move to Liverpool - somewhat laughable as Rug quite rightly points out here.

Moving on from players leaving to players coming in now, as we have been linked to Man City man Gelson Fernandes. A good player, in my opinion, and may well be worth buying. Read all about it here.

With our potential new owner comes potential new signings as it is thought that we will be making the way for a UAE megastar to come through our ranks and join our squad. Read this article as pedalo examines the possibilities.

Finally, transfer rumours of old have resurfaced for our pleasure, as we are once again linked to West Brom powerhouse Paul Robinson. Read about that, probably for the 80th time, here.

Vital Pompey News

Vital Pompey have recently put the vote to you to find the Game of the Season, and the Most Stupid Act of the season. You view the results for game of the season here, and Most Stupid Act here.

Vote on the next subject: 'Most Exciting to Watch' here.

The season has ended and following on from the popular 'Talking Pompey With.....' feature, Rug has resurrected it with a fresh makeover. See the first issue of 'Pompey Talk With.....' here as Rug get's the ball rolling.

Also, make sure you check out the Forums for the T-Shirt competition. All you have to do is muck around on MS Paint, Paint.Net or Photoshop and come up with a great Pompey T-Shirt design. Then, submit it on the forum, for everyone to giggle at! Find it here.

Dave's Toast is here with a special edition - if you haven't yet checked it out then shame on you! Go read it here!

Gino's Fact of the Week

Pompey are currently mentioned in a few Premier League Records. Teddy Sheringham's goal against us when he played for West Ham on Boxing Day 2006 meant he was the Premiership's oldest scorer aged 40 years and 268 days.

More positively, former Pompey favourite Matty Taylor holds the record for the longest Premiership goal scored by a volley, with his effort against Everton on 9 December 2006 a total of 46 yards away from goal.

Everyone knows this, but the Premiership's highest scoring game ever was the 7-4 game at Fratton Park, back on 29 September 2007.

Gino's Teaser

Last week's question asking for the two other players than Gerard Pique to win the Champions League two years running with different teams was not answered by anyone! The answer, if you are interested, was Marcel Desailly (Marseille in 1993 and AC Milan in 1994) and Paolo Sousa (Juventus in 1996 and Borussia Dortmund in 1997).

This week's questions is thus:

Which player has received the most red cards for England, and how many?

See you next week folks!
