Chelski 'in talks' for Johno/Distin for Liverpool

Talks 'take place' over £17m Johnson deal?

The thoughts that we would now be able to keep hold of players like Glen Johnson were something that we very much hoped we could, if not expected...

But according to The Mail's 'exclusive' today it is said that 'Chelsea were last night locked in talks with Portsmouth over a deal to take England defender back to Stamford Bridge for a fee that could eventually reach £17million' with 'the deal probably completed early next week.'

It was also 'claimed' that Fabio Capello had 'recommended' Johnson to the newly appointed Chelski man Carlo Ancelotti.

What they say is 'a source' had this to say: 'he has behaved in a mature manner, as well as improving as a player with regular first-team football. Roman always liked him because of his attacking dare as a full back. Jose did not always agree, but he's not at the club any more, is he?'

People made the point, and a pretty valid one, that with them already having Jose Bosingwa - who is no mug! - would he really want to give up his guaranteed 1st team spot here with the Portuguese international as competition?

£17m is a much more realistic valuation than the £12m that was claimed, also by The Mail, earlier in the week but I would still hope that even 'if' such an offer has been made we will reject it and prove that 'keeping the squad that we currently have in place together' is what we really intend to do...

Distin to Liverpool?

So Glen Johnson is off to Chelski according to The Mail with The Times saying that Sylvain Distin will follow him out the door as he leaves for another top 4 club, Liverpool.

£2m, which is already less than 'reports' have claimed the likes of Spurs and even Bolton will offer, is all that it will apparently take to see the Frenchman move on - that so-called price should be enough to suggest that it is lazy journalism...

I believe that Liverpool were said to have been in for him when he first joined us right, with it also said that he decided against them for our future plans, but also because he knew he would not be a 1st team regular. Some 2-years on this would be even less likely for Distin so would he also really want to give up regular 1st team football, even for Liverpool?

Maybe he will leave, but if he did I would expect him to go somewhere that he knows he will play more often than not...

So, the papers are today saying that the 'expected exodus' is set to go ahead anyway with two of our best players moving on - what do you make of this?

As always leave your thoughts guys...

distin joined us becuase of the ambition the club was showing. why leave now, when we're showing more ambition than ever? However I think the killer problem with both these - is we couldn't replace either for the price being quoted. 2million would get you an average championship centre back, whearas replacing johnson would be practicly impossible. however much they paid!

could be some truth in the chelsea johnson rumour, we all know hes good, and i would prefer him to rejoin them than goto liverpool, where theyve been stalking him, openly, for too long, and suggestions on liverpools valuation for johnson is derisory, a joke really, and the noise from the fans is that £15 mill would be way too much for him....they have no idea! £17 mill from chelsea looks cheap aswell and if theres any truth in it, ild like to hear what johnson think. the recommendation from capello isnt good for us, i just hope james, crouch etc in his ear will make his mind up.Course if the doc doesnt want him to go......but then again is that fair on him? the best signing of the season will be retaining johnson. Distin....cant see it, he likes to play.

These guys have to justify their salaries so they'll make up any old crap. I think the club will be biding their time at the moment, there's no need to sell. Of course the possibility here is that anyone wanting Glen or anyone else will try and buy them now before the takeover as the price will go up. On the other hand if they gamble that the takeover falls flat, then the price will drop as we'll be desperate to sell. Anyone know if the transfer window is open yet?

GJ can play a lot of games for Chelski even with Bosi there. They will cover for each other, team rotation & GJ can play right midfield. That's if he wants to go. £17m would be a rising to figure. Cheap really if Gareth Barry has a £25m rising to figure. As for Distin, his contract is up at the end of 2010, so he could walk for free soon, easier to sell him now & replace with a another top defender who wants to be here.

Annoyingly I can see Johnno going. It will be a massive blow to us, but I think he is a London boy at heart and probably has some good mates in the likes of Joe COle and Frank Lampard. Yes Lemmi the transfer window opened on Monday 1st of June. That's why the Barry deal went straight through.

If we get taken over and Distin goes, then so what, but if we don't, then we need Distin. What on earth are we going to buy to replace him with for 2m? As for Johnno, that's going to be a huge loss whatever happens to us. I can see him going as well Sneakay. I bet Capello is speaking to him this very minute.............

It wuill be a shame if Johnson goes, but I have heard it muted that if the figure goes above £15m then that will envoke the get out clause in his contract and he would be able to leave. I guess in pure business terms then £15m plus is a good deal for us. Purely on football terms then clearly it would be a big blow for us. If it does happen though we still have Cranie who I believe had his potential halted by the broken leg. Now fit and given an opportunity I think he could be a great right back, with Kaboul along side. Like to think that £2m for Distin is a bit of an insult and he wouldn't want to go anyway, what with the pending new ownership. Problem we have now though is that the transfer window is now open and deals are going to start happening and we are not in a position, to do much about it at the moment.

Good point about the takeover not going ahead. I suspect the GJ situation will hinge on whether or not he wants to go, unless the takeover falls through in which case we'll likely have no choice but to accept. He'll be a huge loss but we do have a promising youngster (Wilson) who can play that position. If Distin goes - and we know Sol's going if the takeover doesn't go thru - and we don't get investment to replace Distin, who are we gonna play in the middle? Kaboul and Cranie? Jamo's gonna have a busy year if so.

I really can't see that Pompey would let Johnson go at this moment in time. Surely there must be behind the scenes talk about our player assets even though the takeover hasn't been confirmed yet. With the new owner stating that he wants to build a force to be reckoned with in the PL it would be crazy to offload the nuclease of the present team. The Doc must know what a top player he is. I think the only way Glen will go, is if he actually wants to.

Liverpool Spent £20m on Robbie Keane, and he sat on the bench, so you would have thought they'd learn their lesson! Distin to Liverpool would = A £2m bench warmer, nothing else. Stay with us Distin, where you will get regular football!

Glen to go, I hope not, but we and others are looking at Lucas Neil as he has refused a new contract with West Ham, he would be free but is not in Johnson's class, surely you would think no deals should take place until we have a manager, also now Dr has said Sven is not on his short list,"thou nothing has been setled yet?" read in that what you can.

2 million just isn't enough. he might be 31 but he doesn't show his age on the pitch compare him with Martin Škrtel i know who performed better on the pitch this season. and martin only being 24.

Dr Goatboy surely wont allow these two to leave unless the players actually want to. That said I think Johnson will be turned by the big lights of London or the vast wages on offer at Man City which would easily be double what you are paying him.

I doubt Capello recommended anyone, apparently he is the reason Ancelotti retired, and is described by the Chelsea manager in his biog as a right surly git!
