'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Don't do it Glen!

The Sun is 'reporting' that one of Carlo Ancelotti's first acts of his appointment as Chelski manager will be to try and lure Glen Johnson back to Stamford Bridge this summer...

His performances have been immense this season and to say he 'almost singled headedly kept us up' is not bending the truth that much, well most certainly his showings in the second half of the season without a doubt, so it is little wonder there is interest in him.

Johnson has of course come on leaps and bounds since he signed for Pompey, the potential that was always believed to have been there has been realised and I still feel there is plenty more to come, but would he really want to go back to Chelski given his past history?

Granted, they can offer him year-on-year champions league football and the probable ability to seriously challenge for at least one honour per season but other than 'proving a point', and of course those other perks, why would he want to return to them?

Time will tell, but one thing that I know for sure is, even if we choose to sell - and the apparent need to do so is seemingly gone - why would we sell him for a measly £12m? A potentially world-class right back, and again it is not bending the truth to make such a claim, is worth more than £12m!

Johno you know where your bread is buttered mate, you know it makes sense to stay at Fratton.

You have chased the 'big 4' dream before, and whilst you are clearly a better player now, why disrupt what you have in place with Pompey - you have a 4-year contract with us, who knows where we 'might' be come the end of that? Loyalty is a thing of the past, but are you not at least tempted to see what the future might bring you here for a few years longer at least...

My, how we could do with a 'I am staying with Pompey' right about now eh!

we NEED him to stay. and if he wants to keep his england place, it would probably help him to stay too!

Fingers crossed on this. The problem is at the moment England are in Kazahkstan and then will all be talking about their clubs and who is going where. It can be unsettling bto say the least. I bet some managers tell their plyaers to try and persuade so and so to join us.
eastneydave
..but he might very well go. It might hep his England place if he is playing alongside Terry and, to a lesser degree, Cole every week.

Crouch will look after him Dave, and maybe they might be looking for unsettled players to come to Pompey!

"Granted, they can offer him year-on-year champions league football and the probable ability to seriously challenge for at least one honour per season but other than 'proving a point', and of course those other perks, why would he want to return to them?" I think you've answered your own question, mate. Apart from roads, public order, the aqueduct, health, schools, clean water and better food, what have the Romans ever done for us? Anyway, I really wouldn't worry. No one knows Ancelotti's transfer targets, it's all speculation, and - frankly - there's nothing Johnson can do that Bosingwa can't. Really. You can keep him.
rjh
Hmmm - Johnson or Bosingwa.....I know who I'd rather have. Rjh, YOU can keep HIM
PFCGino
Its BS - we'd never sign him back up. Anyway, rumour has it he's off to Liverpool
Gleeson_23
Chelski had there chance with Glen, but they only want him now cos we have turned him into a great player.
PompeyFcMad
Wouldn't want to see him go but £12m on an initial outlay of £6M is good business!

No doubt the palyer will decide. Yes we are very keen to keep him & yes he is world class & could play for any of the big giants in European footbal. no we may not need the money & the player could stay for a few more seasons & then move on. It takes an attitude & a character to succeed long term at the really big, big clubs & may be GJ doesn't want it yet whilst he is getting his fill with us. GJ will decide.

I can see him going to Liverpool, but never Chelsea. By December, they'll have sacked Ancelotti and brought Capello in on a job-share deal with the FA, and they'll be gearing up to replace all their summer buys with January buys.
PhilTaglia
maybe if they turn it round, £21m! but, we should do everything we can to keep him!
MFFP
We need Glen to stay simple as that, What's the good of getting the backing if you sell the best players, if you make 6m on him you still have to replace him so you spend on another player who does not fit. that's not good business in my book, its not just about numbers.
pompeyyong
If Glen has the right kind of head on his shoulders (which he's already shown he has), he'll realise that with the cash being pumped in, Pompey can now go on a charge. If he stays, he could go down in history as one of the first players to help Pompey into the Champions league, or at least europe. He's done it once before with us, who's to say he can't do it again? Simples.

If that's all they think of him - £12M? When we were skint I've had said don't even think about less than £15M. He seems happy enough at Pompey and he's got a long contract, if we let him know he's wanted - perhaps even 'you're not going anywhere son', he'll probably be happy to stay. On the other hand, if the club turn around and say 'sorry we're selling you' as we would have had to before The Doc came in, then he'd think 'oh well they don't want me, I might as well go'. We're keeping our best players now, these other clubs (even the big clubs) can forget it - hands off.
tracyc
I've got a feeling Glen will stay. Thinking about selling him now that we're out of our financial pickle would be crazy. At the end of the day, where would we get a replacement of his quality, and if we found one we'd end up having to pay top dollar anyway. No brainer!!!
cornypomp
Everyone thought he was off in January, he didn't say anything then, but just sisned a 5 year contract instead, if he were to go 12m wouldn't get him
paultsmouth
If Chelsea want him wack up the price. Rumours suggest £17m. Whatever a very hard act to follow but a top player & will be sadly missed. Ironically many of wern't sure when HR signed him!!! Just goes to prove what we know!!!
