'If It's Football, It's Vital'

What a difference a day makes!

This time yesterday, well as late as the afternoon I would guess, the doom and gloom seemed to be all around us! We did not know which way we could turn without it looking like we were walking down an alley leading to nowhere, well at least nowhere that we wanted to go...

Fast forward to around 3pm and things starting to look up, by the early evening we felt like we had virtually gone into a parallel universe, one that we could not have imagined happening really - a billionaire Arabian property developer had seen an offer accepted and is now in the final throws of completing this swoop for 'little Pompey!'

Suddenly the summer looks amazingly bright, despite the rain I see through my window, and our future seems so much more secure - the uncertainty is going and we 'should' be able to have a nice relaxing summer looking forward to next season...

Despite our apparent 'new found wealth' I still think plenty of big decisions need to be made and plenty of players that 'could' have left still should leave, with so many of our current squad still having to look themselves long and hard in the mirror - this does not excuse some of their actions and performances, the commitment that some showed was shocking, and will linger in my memory, I know that!

So, we have a billionaire owner, and owner that has said he wanted a 'smallish club that he could build up over a number of years into something big and special'. Al Fahim looked at Newcastle, Spurs and West Ham but it was us that he took on!

Some will be expecting him to spend countless millions this summer - but none of us actually do know what will be spent anyway do we, but I hope that he has other plans, and to be honest if it were me these are the areas that I would be looking at, not in any specific order mind...

* Bring in a new manager: I have made my views perfectly clear on Paul Hart, and with the new owners secured there should be absolutely no reason why we do not allow him to return to his most influential role with the youth side of things and bring in someone else.

Names such as Sven Goran Eriksson, Frank Rijkaard and Slaven Bilic for starters should not be as out of reach as they might have appeared - with Brian Kidd already in place, the thought of Eriksson coming in after all is not so unthinkable is it, far from it - and to be fair the guy has a fantastic club record, and also does like to bring through youth as well, so a win win situation maybe?

* Secure the futures of players: Glen Johnson and Peter Crouch need to stay here, and I firmly believe that neither were looking to move away from Pompey but would have had to leave, so with the 'need' to sell them firmly removed now, why should we? Unless they want to go why let them go. They must both know where their bread is buttered eh?

* Offer 'some' free agents new deals: Give new contracts to the out of contract players that are worth keeping - some would still go without a doubt for me, if nothing else some of the younger players could, and would, do as much, if not more than them anyway!

* Redevelop Fratton Park: Lets get this done and dusted, why move into a new stadium, keep the home that we know and love. Besides 'if' England win the world cup bid we can get one then anyway, until then lets carry on as planned with our current home, making this bigger and better!

* Finally do the training ground: We need to get the bloody training ground sorted out once and for all; get the state of the art facilities that we have been trying to get sorted out for years, sorted out!

* Continue youth development: We must continue to plough money, and even more of it, into the youth development scheme. This is still our future but with even more money to throw at this we can bring through even more players to make our future even brighter - Arsenal have the right idea with their youth set-up, there is absolutely no reason why we should not model ourselves on them in this area now...

Also, speaking of youth development lets bring some of these through next season, something that I suspect was planned anyway - so 'if they are good enough they are old enough' and all that!

* Bring in some new players: I still maintain my thoughts that if we separate the wheat from the chaff in the current squad, bring through some of the kids into it and add a few names to what we have then this squad alone is more than good enough to be a top 10 side without a shadow of a doubt.

Who would I bring in?

We have some quality as it is, assuming we can keep most of that I would be looking to bring back in some heart and soul, and this heart and soul for me would be players like Gary O'Neil, Matty Taylor, Benjani and Pedro Mendes - yep I know that is going back, and yep I also know at the time most were sold for a reason, as 'better quality' was brought in, but balancing this quality with hard work, graft and dedication is also needed - although to be fair none of them are slouches are they! We could bring the lot in for £20m or thereabouts methinks...

I would still be looking at quality cheaper/free agents, such as, and off the top of my head Javier Saviola at Barcelona, I hear he is out of contract in the summer as is Citeh's Daniel Sturridge. A cheaper option could be the highly talented Giovani dos Santos. I know this might seem 'over the top', but 'if' he could stay fit then someone like Michael Owen could be a realistic option now could he not? He is out of contract, clubs will not exactly be queuing up for him so would he not be worth a cheeky punt?

So, there you have it, just my own thoughts - so far 'the summer of truth' I wanted has started pretty well, we have been sold, which was a must, now lets hope we can keep what we want to keep and go about things the right way to put Pompey back on the map for the right reasons!

I have always hoped we would have another 'European tour', but thought the chances of this had gone, but maybe in time, and time is what we need, and what I want us to do this over, there is a chance that we could still see this again - and I for one cannot wait, as I loved these times and would love to experience them again!

Whatever though, the underlining factor that I must stress is 'I hope that we do things the right way', which means not tossing away money left right and center but redeveloping Fratton, sorting out the training ground, continuing to develop youth and giving them the chance, keeping as many of the quality - yet fully committed players - as we can and bringing in others, at reasonable amounts - and the right type, along with a manager and of course treating us, the fans with respect, honesty and fairness... This all seems more than fair right?

As always, share you own thoughts below please guys...

With you all the way there Rug
I lke the idea that he was looking at "smallish clubs" and then mentioned Barcodes and Spuds in the same breath; made me smile
lets get things clear.... this guy is a property developer, and there must be an assumption that he has some developmental plans in Portsmouth. whether it is a stadium, hotels, who knows, but one thing is for certain, he is very very successful at what he does. Chix is right, we should not start throwing caution to the wind just yet, I am sure in the up and coming week, we will know in more detail his plans for our wonderful club. The future does look brighter now and lets hope we can attract the star power that we had begun to attract when he was here. On a side note, Him has just stated on another site that he misses his spiritual home and wishes to return...... roflmfho
Seems to be a smart business man when not attempting to spend other peoples money (Ronaldo to Man City) so there is no reason you wont get the above. If 20m brings you a stronger squad and that turns into 3-4 more wins on this season, Europe will be pretty close. First part of Fratton redevelopment has to be the dumpers please!
UKTony Ashley wanted 400m for Newcastle and Spurs would be around 300m. Think he probably paid about a 10th of that taking on the bank debt and a token amount to buy the club.
Agree with most of the article but not so sure on the players to bring in. Would love to see Mendez back but GON, Benjani and Taylor were not good enough. They run a lot and will give their all for Pompey but at the end of the day they were sold to bring in better players and hopefully we can find better replacements. Owen was a great player and goal scorer but cannot see him getting back to anywhere near his old form. Like sturridge and santos and with maybe 4 more good players i think that a European place is a realistic target. Dont get back to England often and when i do its impossible to get a ticket (even tried for the Hull game last November) but look forward to seeing many of the games live on TV here
In the words of Saint Kamara of Fratton,"Unbelievable". Please keep Johnson, Crouch and Distin, and spend any cash made available wisely. Is Ranieri still available? He seems to have the attributes to manage money and players, I would love to see Benjy and O'Neill back at the club, plus Greening and Koren from the Baggies.
The league will be more intresting. I hope your new owner is prepared to spend freely and that you buy some good players. teddylyon, Spurs? 300 million? Where did you get that idea? Spurs are Certainly not for sale and if they are levy will want a lot more than 300 million as afterall we generate the 11th highest Anual Revenue in the world even with a Smallish ground and with no champions league football.
I am really pleased for you and hope that Motormouth has Learnt his lesson after being dumpee buy ADUG for his embarrassing comments. It really will add to the compettition to the top 4 with a lot more teams being able to compete for the quality players.
Buzz Lightyear
*need to stop getting carried away with myself*. I think bringing benji and gary o'neil back would be good places to start, as they are both very dependable players, are almost certainly available. However, one thing we definatly would need is a good central midfielder. we played half this season with three players in midfield, and yet our midfield was still worse than most peoples!
Well said carpet, we need a Diarra/Mendes type of midfielder to open up defences. Could we get Darren Gibson from United? He looked good against Hull, and when he gets the chance he seem to be quite a decent young player. However i would love to get Huddlestone, he is a quality player who needs to play every week, he would really give us some strength and passing ability in the centre of midfield, get him in there with Fernandes from City or the other Fernandes from Valencia.
What a difference a day makes indeed, and I really couldn't envisage a buyer being found so soon and someone so wealthy! As we discussed the other day, this completely moves the goalposts and our sights should now be set much higher in terms of management and player recruitment. Bilic is my preferred choice now for manager with some high pedigree players to follow (not your Kaka's as they are well out of reach even with endless funds) but we could look at the likes of Kalou, Quaresma, Jeremy Toulan, Saviola and players of that ilk. Exciting times and a seismic shift in expectation and what is now realistically achievable. Bring it on, and nice to have a buzz about the place instead of the doom and gloom!
I heard, whether it's true or not, that he looked at Newcastle, Spuds & West Ham but choose us. More to do with us and he can do it his way. If we don't get a new stadium now we will never get one. Deep pockets maybe but not for long, we'll use it up if we can.
I hate to be a damp squid, but big tranfers, top aint gonna happen. 1. Pompey is an up and coming yuppie second home type of place with waterfronted flats he is in it for the property angle so expect plans for a sascha type development with a ground attached. 2. He is not as rich as people are thinkng..check the webb..estimated to be worth only £311M. that is not as much as Mike ASHLEY. ...So yes we are going to be safe from administration, and we will be able to purchase some players..but do not kid yourselves, it will not be on the scale of Citeh, or chelsea...or even that other small club Spurs (..only a Joke you yiddo's you are a truelly massive club with the only real potential to get in the top 4) thats why he did not go for WHU,Spuds or Zebra's. With the mackems having a £200m investment, we are going to struggle to attract to quality of diarra etc...but even with that said it is great news

I'd have Mendes back in an instant and not for sentimental reasons. He should never have been sold in the first place for the paltry some we got for him. Skillfull, a tactition and a dammed hard worker. Rangers think the world of wonder.
Good article, agree with most but the players. I wouldn't want Owen, too injury prone. Love to have Benjani back, would make an interesting partnership with Crouch, and probably quite cheap. Mendes, no chance of him coming back, GON would like him back and is maybe the most probable of the players listed. No one mentions Kranchy, he's always said he would be going...will there be a change of heart with a new owner? I'd quite like to see Sven take charge, he did well at Man C, before they got new owners. I think it would be interesting and he would probably bring in some interesting South American players too. Didn't he take Elano to Man C., now I liked him when he arrived. Chris Brunt from the Baggies might be interesting, with Koren, but I'd leave Greening. Would be very funny to take one of the 'Spuds' better players, like Lennon, that would really impress me.
Fratton del Sol
I would have said sven did very well at city before he was inexplicably sacked. Also, he is very good in the transfer market, and a real draw to quality players, that maybe would otherwhys be lacking. plymouth graham - saschas estimated value on the web was 30 million - yet he seemed to have a lot more funds than that! ****ill august last year) [Edited by rug]
great article rug and i agree with pretty much everything you say and actually most of what everyone else does. but i would love to see Raniari in charge i think people forget it was him who built up most of the chelsea squad mourinho had, lampard etc and he did it on pretty limited funds (well compared to what they got after XD)
ooops, my post looks weird (and incomplete) I hope I didn't make some mistake with the formatting :S
Lennon,and/or bently..but would they lower themselves....? Martinez as manager? that would be a good move.. on a webb site through newnow the Dr, say he will talk to the fans, on another site he has given out his personal em ail at Hydra so ive passed this on to Rug. It also appears that he is heading a consortium of middle east and far east money..and they already have a firm plan to boost the PFC brand with plans for youth development and facilities...check out the newnow site
plymouth graham
Top stuff Rug! Cant beleive how quickly things can turn around.. I think Peter Storrie's done a great bit of business here. Cant wait to read the News of the World this weekend, after saying how stuffed we were for months
Good article, PR.
i think i've sorted it out now pompeycarpet, made a slight edit on your formatting and it seems ok now...

thanks Et_tu_Pompeii, its been good to see a few comments recently - didnt think you would return to vital, which would have been a big shame.
and the scummers can't pay the wages which is due today!!!!!!!!!! Oh dear, maybe more deducted for next season or even better, being dropped another division or two. Happy days.
Maybe if we asked nicely, The Doctor would buy us the small team down the road which could use as a feeder club. Maybe change the name to Portsmouth Juniors or Southsea or something else that's pleasant and p1$$es them off!
no, give them nothing, let them rot, very slowly. After decades of grief from them, we owe them fck all.
If you read the interview in he says "The money for the Portsmouth FC acquisition and the needed future investment has been raised through the network of Falcon Equity from Asian and Middle Eastern investors. None of these investors are from the real estate sector or part of a royal family." So his personal wealth is not really an issue.
Eriksson to be manager we have refused to comment !!!!!!!! on sky sports news
stfc ballboy
I don't want Ericson.
Enjoy it --- and to the person that suggested Ranieri as your next manager, if you could get him, he'd be fantastic. I miss Claudio, he was a class act.
I don't want Ericson. - why not? aside from being one of the most succesful club managers ever, and englands most succesful national manager since Sir Alf Ramsay (I think it was him), he prooved at man city he could build a team very quickly, with young players, to play attractive football. what's not to like?
I hope we don't turn into man city - that chucking 100million at Kaka was embarrassing, I don't want us behaving like that, but to build slowly. From what I've read that the good doc has been saying, this seems to be his plans for us. He's said he wants to develop the youth academy side of things, so I hope Hart goes back to that and we get someone like maybe Sven, or Billic in. He's even said how great the Pompey fans are and how he's the investor but its still our club and he wants to take note of what we say. I say, welcome Dr Al Fahim!
the doc says he wants to develop our youth team... to me a clear indication that he wants to put a man who has excelled at bringing through youth players in charge of our acadamy. can anyone think where we might find a man like that?
up I wander if ...CARLOS TEVEZ, will be a Pompey player soon. Man Utd will not pay the £25m, he did not return to England with the squad, and Kia will take anyone’s cash...its just a thought, as it would send a signal out of intent to future targets just like Robiniho deal did for Citeh, and with the possibility of Mr Maradona having some influence/part of the set I could easily see this happening
plymouth graham
I have the same verdict as Gandor on Eriksson. He's not passionate about Pompey or about football. He's passionate about money. He'd be every bit as mercenary and dangerous for us as Twitchy was. We just might be about to get ourselves out of the whole twitchy dug for us. Please let's not get a manager in who'll be keen to dig us another.
Quite right Phil. Mercenary Eriksson will attract mercinary players.
they're all mercenaries, the whole lot
plymouth graham
Phil, gandor - are there any players or managers who ARN'T mercinaries? some are more blatant about it than others, but at least you know what your getting with sven. If you put a big pay check up, and say "qualify for europe, and you'll get this" - you'll qualify for europe. With Jamies dad, we thought we had a loyal manager - look where that left us.
"Would be very funny to take one of the 'Spuds' better players, like Lennon, that would really impress me" And why Exactly would we sell lennon to pompy?
becuase we might pay for him...? same reason you were planning on buying crouch, johnson, kranjcar, distin, jamo, belhadj...etc. from us
pompycarpet, First of all the only person we bought from pompy was Our boy JD. Every other player could have been Media speculation. Even if it were true and we were looking to buy some players from you it was because you were in a situation where you needed money. We dont need money. we are a Financially strong club. so why would we sell lennon to pompy? the only players we will sell to you would be our Rejects that is Bently, Bent, Zokora, Giovani, pavlyuchenco, Bale, Hutton, Chimbonda etc
no-one said we were actually going to buy lennon. ...he's not good enough for us anyway :-)
hahahah, lennon is not good Enough for Portsmouth? hahah thats the Funiest thing i have ever heard. He is good enough for England but not for portsmouth
let it go Yid_from_India, i tohught we agreed to disagree on these kinds of issues... in your eyes spurs are a bigger club than pompey ever will be in every way - and to be fair in most areas you are probably right, that said 'on the pitch' size and performance, which is where it really counts, pound-for-pound in this area over the past 2-3 seasons or so, when evened out, there isnt alot in it! and for a club that had donkies years head start on pompey in 'the big league' that aint bad going for a club of our stature...
i say spurs are 'a bigger club than pompey ever will be in every way,' well, 'if' this takeover goes through as it should, and 'if' we do things the right way in time - and time is something i am all for - that statement in itself could prove to be very wrong...
as i say, can we now let this go and stop the whole 'were bigger and better than you', 'you could not sign these players because were better and have more money' and 'we do not want him as he is not good enough for you/he is too good for you' rubbish guys eh?
Pompeyrug, i did not refer to the size of our respective clubs. I just said that there is noway pompy can buy Lennon from spurs. is there something wrong in my statement?
trust me, 'if' our deal goes through without any problems and 'if' - not that i want this - we waved enough money in 'his' face for aaron lennon, and in the face of lennon and his agent for that matter, pompey could and would buy lennon from spurs!
pompeyrug, let me inform you that there is absolutly no chance of that. Lets forget the face that lennon has just signed a 4 year contract. i am sure levy will back harry with atleast 40 million to spend. 10 or so million will be raised by sales. Not lennon but people like Bently. we have no shortage of moaney mate. we even out spent Man city during january(53 million). Maybe harry would have sold important players when he was at pompy because of your lack of cash but he has a lot of money to work with at Tottenaham.
i'm enjoying this cat fight between Yid and Rug. let me assure you both, however, that Lennon isn't worth fighting over anyway. his pace fools people into thinking he's a quality player.
RadioactiveD, i guess you have not seen him play lately. He is undoubted quality. he is Tottenham's player of the season. He is good enough to start ahead of Bechham and the sad Excuse of a footballer that is Scumy walcott and SWP for england
has he learn't to cross yet though? I think it is fairly naiive yid_from_india to think that levy wouldn't take a heap of money from lennon. If we were prepared to pay massivly over the odds, then you would. However, as I said before (and agreeing with RadioactiveD ) - I still wouldn't want him anyway.
trust me, im not a fan of lennon's anyway - he has something about him, but has for 3-4-years within fully fullfilling his 'potential'... he is just an example, again i say 'to say there is no chance' is wrong. 'he' cannot, and will not, be given unlimited funds, when this time comes that is when the true colours spoken of yesterday will be show...
like i say tho, time to again 'agree to disagree' and move on methinks, right?
pompycarpet, if you could Answer yes to this Question i will accept that lennon is *****e. have you watched him play atleast 10 or 12 times this season? If you had you would you would know how good he has been. He has been superb for us. Game after game he has had the Beating of Evra , Ashley cole etc time and time again. He has massivly improved his crossing. Levy and Harry have promised that Modric and lennon are not for sale even if anu of the big 4 through Bucket loads at us. It is you who is naiive if you think you can buy lennon or if you think lennon is not good eough for pompy.
pompyeyrug, you obviously Know more about harry than me so, i cant argue. I hope that is not the case with harry. he probably has bigger funds and Higher Expectations to deal with than ever before in his Career. so i hope he behaves differently and i hope you are wrong
lennon cant run inside!!! its as easy as that!!! he can go out but not come back in,. one dimensional and awful. btw you yiod pr(&*k, i noticed your list of rejects is very very long and more imortantly very very expensive. you lot might have some cash (nothing compared to us though muppet) but you dont know how to spend it!!!! thanks for chipping us up on that boken footed crab defoe!!!!
Dj_Bling i dont want to get into a Argument but lennon can run inside better than most. he has scored 2 or 3 goals and created many cutting inside this season. I dont want to take part in a i am richer than you fight.I am only defending Aaron lennon. Its apparent that most of you have not seen a lot of him this season.
@PompeyCarpet: No, you're quite right, pretty much all managers (and players for that matter) are mercenary. But Sven is worse than most, and he's not just out to line his own pockets, he likes throwing it around needlessly. I accept your point that he's pretty open about being a mercenary, but I think there are managers who would be more sensible with money and more forward thinking than Sven. Look at Wenger. He has consistently spent less than his club gives him to spend because he only wants players who fit into his vision. That's the sort of manager we should be looking for, IMO. When we didn't have money, I was a big fan of Strachan. I don't feel differently just because we (maybe) have money. Let's put a scotsman with his hands on the purse strings :P
Jeez....I'm gonna start to work for the news of the screws....I must have a talent for making up a comment which almost becomes a real story and getting everyone going it would seem....LOL I've been cracking up over YID-FI, almost as funny as if we did buy Lennon. I could try and explain the joke, but then why should I,...keep having fun YidFI you know you want to. Perhaps we can sell spuds another sicknote too.
Fratton del Sol
Don't forget the Manager on Bail we got 5m for!
Its funny I thought this was about something happening to Pompey, now its all about Spurs. its got nothing to do with Spurs, why are we even talking about them. Its all this thread is about now.
"why are we even talking about them" - becasue it's funny :-). You know, I actually heard that we WERE going to buy lennon!
