Lassana Diarra was a 'definite' for the friends of Kanu charity game on Bank Holiday Monday, this was confirmed by Kanu in The News last week and backed up by the club on the Pompey Site, so you took this as a near certainly...
However the Frenchman was unable to make the game with the Spanish season still ongoing - I guess I am feeling a fair bit cheated by the club at the moment, but not as much as I have been as I have ranted and raved a fair bit to ease this, so I point the finger at them for offering something they could not back-up... - and this left him disappointed as he revealed to The News.
Diarra has issued an apology for not being able to make the game, which he had desperately wanted to so he could say his 'goodbyes' to us - which he never had the chance to do at Fratton: 'I was really hoping to have the chance of saying goodbye and thank you to such fantastic fans.
'Portsmouth is a place that holds such happy memories for me. I love the place and it provided one of the happiest times of my career.
'Unfortunately, the Spanish season is not yet over and we were called into training yesterday instead.
'Perhaps if Kanu's game had been in the evening it would have made a difference, but as it was I had to pull out.
'For me it was such a massive disappointment and I didn't want the fans to think I didn't care about them.
'I hope to come back one day to see them. I respect them and I shall never, ever forget their support during my time there.
'I have already apologised to Kanu, it was such a shame to miss out on such a fantastic day. It's my aim, though, to come back and say goodbye to the fans as soon as I can.'
You are welcome back anytime Diarra!
Credit where it is due, the guy did not need to do this but he has, and I do believe him when he says what he has - some players say things that you do believe are true, and during his time with us in all fairness he was nothing but honest and offered us nothing but 100% all of the time.
It is a tough call, some say he is the best player that we have ever had - as an 'all-round' player I think he probably is the best player that I have ever seen in a blue shirt, and for that matter probably ever will see, so I guess technically he is, but I still rank Robert Prosinecki at the top of the tree...just, I think...
By all accounts it was a pretty good game and Matty Ritchie shone throughout, offering a glimpse of things to come hopefully scoring two belters, one from 25-yards and another from 30-yards - I thought that I saw him on the bench at Wigan, and it appears he was. Not as a named sub though, but he did travel with the 1st team. To be honest I would have put him on the bench and brought him on!
I do not want to get anyone into trouble, but cannot let the mention of this game pass without a mention of Benjani - he is said to have been in KFC after the game and when asked 'when he was coming home' he replied 'I wish!'
