Mokoena reveals Pompey deal

Blackburn Rovers and South African midfield player Aaron Mokoena has revealed he has agreed to join Pompey on a three year year contract.

Mokoena the South African captain is a combative midfield player who has been at Rovers for three seasons but has found it difficult to make the starting line up under boss Sam Allardyce. With the 2010 World Cup in his home country Mokoena feels he needs regular first team football to cement his place in the national team.

He told Rovers Radio 'I am going to Portsmouth, I am going there to play, it is what every player wants to do. I have decided it is time to move on for me. As we know we have a World Cup in South Africa and I have to play, I have to play week in, week out. So it is going to be a good challenge for me going to Portsmouth and we'll see how it goes.

As Rug just said to me on the phone, does this mean Paul Hart already have the job as we are agreeing deal already? Is the the kind of player we are going to be signing over the summer window to replace those who do not agree their new contracts which could possibly be on reduced wages?

yeh players who can't get into Rovers first team... so next year another season of misery, but one where 40 points might not be near enough to stay up. So whats the next player we will sign gonna be, a Boro cant afford in the coka cola,..and sunderland not good enoughs for new manager and board. Oh and a couple of lower league potentials...
plymouth graham
Seems a straight swap with Davis to me, another defensive minded player, the futures hardly looking sunglasses worthy is it?
paultsmouth
A bad start if we are signing players like him, i agree we will be looking at other teams squad cast offs and cheap fire sales from the relegated clubs.
Owenspompey
I wouldn't say just cos Big Sam didn't pick him therefore he is crap, after all these managers have their little whims don't they? I like the sound of combative midfield player (unlike Mullins who is just midfield as a statement of geography)
hammersmithblue
Hammersmith, he is a very average midfield player, like Mullins, Diop, Hughes and Davis, he brings us nothing new and does not strengthen the squad in any way, look at his goal scoring record.
Owenspompey
The Axe as he is known was a great buy for us at the start. He battles hard and gives it everything but TBH his lack of ability was exposed on too many occasions. If I'm honest I'm not all that sad to see him go. Good luck next season lads hope you stay up.
durks de rover
(unlike Mullins who is just midfield as a statement of geography) now that was good!
ruffcider
just back - well not back, have to stay just outside of exeter at my bros again as cannot get a trian home as its too late - was not impress when i heard the rumours, are even less impressed now!
this to me suggests that hart is almost certainly getting the job, which also suggests that we are not being taken over this summer - or at least not being taken over by anyone that is going to look to bring in their own man/enable us to keep 'better' players... mokoena is a 'battler', sign of the times ahead methinks, then again at least he 'should' at least battle and want to battle for the shirt!
pompeyrug
i have to agree Rug.If this is to be confirmed then it looks like somebody is making plans for our team early. Storey? i think it might be PH.I expect we will get news soon of his appointment
race
Wow, a top drawer signing if ever there has been one, I'd be scared, very very scared.
TeddyLyon
Look, face it, these are the players we're going to be getting in to the club over the summer. There's going to be no more Diarra's, Defoe's for a long time yet so let's face reality!! And the reality is, we are punching above our weight. And we're in dire financial straits. Next season's aim will be once again consolidation in the Premiership. Let's give the new guys a chance!
jonathanl50
to me..it all has that same feel as when we were first promoted to PL. Unfortunately, we now do not have Old Hairy the twitch (despite his bare faced lies, is, the best PFC manager we have had in my life time) to general us to safety with a mediocre team of players. Next season will be certain relegation, why 1. No Money= No players of sufficient quality. 2. Small club crap ground no training facilities-thats the general view of the pr footballing ess and community. 3. the newly promoted clubs will have zeal and vigour and will fight harder to prove themselves and at least 3 out of 3 are bigger clubs than Pompey.-if SUFC win playoff all 3 will be bigger. 4. PH is a good bloke, but will have to play and motivate 2nd raters, has beens, never quite beens and kids. I do not see him as Mr Charismatic. prepare ye the way oh barcodes of the north...did'nt Milan once predict in the News that we could be the "Newcastle of the south"....he might have been right.
plymouth graham
sorry "Footballing press" that should read
plymouth graham
This signing doesn't exactly inspire, does it. From what I read on 606 from Blackburn fans he's a bit like Mullins with a bad attitude! Oh please let us get a good new owner! Anyone know Richard Branson's e-mail address?
tracyc
hopefully ...no forget it, there is no hope, only stark reality...next season we are down..down down deeper and down..at least thats a better SQ song than that awful rocking all over the world trash they played at wembley last year...oh yeh we went to wembley a few times didnt we...not all bad then..some good memories to take with us.
plymouth graham
We really are scraping the bottom of the barrel now. Please some body buy the club!! We are like a ship without a rudder if this is the calibre of player we can expect. Who is making these decisions? If it's Hart and he has been given the nod, then next season will be a replay of the last 12 games. Very painful!!!
Mike1954
Boy you are a pessimistic lot. now don't bury the guy befoew he is dead you lot. Think of it from this POV. He is the captain of a country competing in the world cup!!!! He isn't sum scrubber like mullins with nothing to prove. He has to play his heart out to be sure he will be representing his country next year, in his country. Yeah he is a battler, a low skill, high risk, battler. But isnt that what Pompey is about??? We arent a pretty club, we arent a flair style club. this is why blokes like Krankjar stand out, and honestly dont look at home. And how many rejects have we got in the past that have picked up their game in front of the BRILLIANT fratton park atmosphere. We are a club of self respect, and admiration. They all HATE us. It's us VS the world. and if he wants to come and sign on to the most unfashionable club in England, with thge obvious aim to fight for his WC spot i say let the lad in with open arms. ALSO.....he is a free transfer, and he wont exactly kill the wage bill. if he is bad, then so be it, at least his attitude will be there, unlike Gekas, Utaka, etc etc. It is still very early, i dont see this as a sign that PH is set and we dont have a buyer lined up. I see it as PS saw the guy as being a very very cheap option that hopefully will be a squad player (although AM probably thinks otehrwise). But if we dont find a buyer he will do a job. I say Welcome!!!!! Now get to work Aaron!!!!
DJ_Bing
Well said DJ Bing... Whilst I'm anti-Hart and also a realist I thinjk if we are to slag off every player we sign between now and Auguest it is gonna be a very long depressing summer - Come on people we know what things are gonna be like at least give the lad a chance he is an International captain afterall ... And as for a player being crap because he doesn't fit with the current managers plans ... Well that makes Mendes, Taylor and GON crap at the point they left Pompey... I think not.. time for a realisity check YES, but also time for us as supporters to wake up and get behind the club.. I only hope PH is not manager .. but if he is appointed then I will back him !!
Chix
like i said above, not impressed - cannot say otherwise - but also said he is a 'battler' and that is most likely what we are going to need, and so long as he battles for us and plays for the shirt that will do.
pompeyrug
Well done DJ Bing for putting it all into perspective. In all honesty, I was about to jump on the bandwagon until I saw your post. Chix, I don't feel like getting behind the club or the manager at the moment - its too soon after crappy yesterday!
Gandor1
So how long do we consolidate for? Just next season? Five years? And what is the aim? To be a top Premier League team? To just stay in the Premier League? We are a small city in a small area and will never find another 20,000 fans, which means we will never compete with the teams who attract 40,000 +. Forget billionaire benefactors, it ain't gonna happen. So the ONLY answer is to have a smart, well connected manager who knows the world game. Unfortunately, and I agree with Plymouth Graham, we had one, possibly the best one around. All I know is, next season, I do not want to watch the rubbish we served up under PH. I refer the honerable gentlemen to the article I sumitted a while back.
Et_tu_Pompeii
If we are going for 'free transfers' would someone kindly walk to FP & guide the top man in Tevez's direction?! We could offer him football every week - ala Lass. I may be dreaming.
.Andrew.
