No surprises here then!

No surprises here then!

I think the words 'Theofanis Gekas has left Pompey' will not surprise anyone will they?

If anyone expected, or thought, that Theo Gekas would be staying beyond the end of this season I would be surprised, strike that amazed!

The only 'slight' surprise for me is the fact that he has 'reportedly' left Fratton before the season ended, with The News 'reporting' that the Greek striker actually left last Sunday, which was someway ahead of schedule.

'Apparently' Gekas refused to take part in the game with Sunderland on Monday so was promptly shown the exit door ahead of schedule as a result...

I do feel for the guy, ok his attitude might stink in as much as he refused to turn out for the ressies and then 1st team, but to have been made him prove himself like no other senior players has really had to do so was insulting to a seasoned pro who has an excellent goalscoring record at club and international level - maybe 'personal differences' got in the way of things here, and that should not be how things are done.

Best of luck to the guy though, I somehow doubt we will be spoken of very highly by him, or many, if any, other Greeks in the future though!

Jermaine Pennant is also expected to go the same way, something that does not surprise me, but does disappoint me slightly to be honest.

The fact that he did not even make the bench on Monday confirmed what I had basically already come to accept - we would not be making an offer to him.

No part of the 'walk of shame', oops, I mean 'lap of appreciation' on Monday after the game and also allegedly not going to the end of season awards evening on Monday only caps it to be honest.

I suspect that a deal has already been agreed with someone else, quite possibly Sunday's opponents Wigan, although 'reports' claim that Villarreal could snap him up?

I would have liked Pennant to have been given more of a chance, and would also have liked us to have signed him on, but there you go. That said he can blow hot and cold and would be on good money, 'if' we get a new manager in they might not fancy him, so we could not be offering him a deal, and I guess nor can we to that many other people can we!?

The chances of him featuring on Sunday would be somewhere between slim and none methinks...

The first of many no doubt. Not many will worry about these compared to the posssble loss of Glen & Crouchie. The ins & outs will be 'interesting/frustrating' all summer.

I used to think Steve Bruce and Wigan we're a joke (seperately) but they've had a great season. I could see Pennant doing well up there. However jealous I am of Wigan right now though they are welcome to him as Pennant's just another Premier League mercenary. (I'll eat my words if he does turn up to the end of season awards). I feel the same as when Defoe left - "Thanks for the effort. Goodbye!"

In years to come, a great quiz question will be "Whose Pompey 1st team career spanned less than 60 seconds, during which he didn't touch the ball?". I wonder if we will remember the answer?

I feel embarrassed, frankly, for the way that Gekas has been treated. They should either have sacked TA before January transfer orgy OR kept him on to use the players he had brought to the club so that he could have a bit of a go at shaping his vision. Waste of bleedin' time!

We still have to write his biography and his must be the shortest career of them all.

I'd have liked the chance to see Gekas play and make my own mind up about him, but if he's refused to play for the reserves and now the first team then he obviously hadn't got the right mentality to be a part of Portsmouth Football Club. I don't blame Paul Hart for wanting to see him play before he threw him into the cauldron of the premier league, that was just common sense. As with most things Pompey we probably will never know the real story. I doubt somehow that Gekas will be a terrible loss though. As for Pennant he's a player who promises much and delivers little, won't lose any sleep over him either.

With Gekas it will always be a question of what might have been, we'll never know, but its true that his attitude wasn't right. As for Pennant, have been a fan since he came here and would have loved him to have stayed. Oh well - I'm sure the transfer window will turn up a few I'll be more gutted about! Not sure I'm exactly looking forward to it.

UKTony I was going to comment on the very same thing.. Will we remember him ? I guess that depends on whether you know whose record he has now broken .. Eastneydave I was gutted when he played as (as you mention it's another biog to add to the list !

As for Pennant.. he showed glimpses but if he seriously thinks he is good enough for Real Madrid then so is Mullins.. well maybe not Mullins but you take my point !

hello everyone...Im new to this site...well it feels like it as ive had a few months off although ive been reading it. Just compare monday nights player news. Gekas -who i feel disappointed not to have seen considering our poor goals tally- to Linvoy. A man who gets a standing ovation having been out for two years, at wembley he got a bigger cheer than all the players when he lifted the cup, and wasn't in the squad. Then look at Utaka, a headless gazelle, but scores two goals-or 1 and a half i suppose. a man who's confidence was apparently shattered under Hairy redknobb Gekas is better off out of the camp, Pennant too. I am rubbish at tipping or picking manangers, the only time i have ever got it right was Rix's replacement, although i believed Pulis would be good but it didnt last long enough. I thought the frenchman and the Serb both be good....hmm so as far as Hart goes I have no real thoughts other than i like him. I think he might be good at man management and he might give some youngsters a chance.
