How about this for a thought?

We all believe that we will be 'scratching around' for 'freebies' and 'cheapies' this summer right? So how about this for a thought?

I know the guy has had a 'difficult' 12-months or so, to say the least, but how about we take a punt on Leroy Lita?

I, and others, have often mentioned his name in the past - I know he has not exactly had the best of times for the past 12-months, like I say, but given a fresh start, a clean slate and ground rules laid down to him do we really think that he would not jump at a chance of a return to the premier league?

Afterall, he has just been released by Reading so is available on a free - he would be worth a punt right?

It's a good shout. He's a natural goalscorer (and you don't find too many of those around) , hungry and will no doubt jump at a return to the Premier League. However, I warn you he brings 'baggage' with him. He can be a trouble-maker, a disruptive influence in the dressing room, do we really need that? He fell out with Coppell several times and openly spoke out about his displeasure. There were also rumours a couple of weeks ago that he was banned from Reading's training ground for the final 2 weeks of the season because of a fight with a team mate there. He could be a good capture...but you've been warned!!

Rug, There's a few of us who've been saying for a year now that we should sign Lita. I also like the look of Sturridge at City.

We already have Nugent who is not good enough for the Premier League (unfortunately) We certainly don't want a trouble maker as well as not being good enough to play in the Premier League striker. If we sign players like HIM relegation is nailed on next season.

thats why i say we have 'ground rules laid down to him' from the off...
lets look at things this way tho, 'if' things go the way we think they might we are not going to get a great deal of quality come in, and alot of this seems like it will come in from championship sides or frees - lita has at least played in the premier league and did score goals in his first season, his partnership with nugent for the u21 side was always good plus 'if' we keep crouchy, that little and large paring could well work?
yep, i admit it is a risk - but its a risk that 'could' be worth taking...

i dont think we are gonna have much choice other than to sign players like Lita, other frees and go to the "big four" and try and get some loans sorted out... unless the new owner comes in of course...

Lita looks a bit too much like a Defoe-type player - and we all know what happeed with him, don't we? I would air on the side of caution with Lita. We do't want Nuge to bust his knuckles again, do we? :-D

I think he could be an asset if as you say Rug there are ground rules etc. The bit about trouble at Reading, no doubt it all true but I am sure he would argue 'its takes two'. Only had to look at the Pool on Sunday to see Carragher having a go at Arboloa, does that make him a trouble maker?? Maybe we might not have to look around at the hopefulls, just maybe we will get new buyers in who will give the manager £40m to go and get a couple of big guns in!! You never know!!

Reading have also released Hahnemann the keeper who is worth a shot and likely to be sending Kitson back to Stoke. Both worth a shot given our lack of funds. Also, Warnock of Blackburn, Brunt of West Brom, there;s certainly steady players out there but we would need to snap them up quick before the promoted teams get wind.

Thanks Rug Was it just me or did Utaka actually looked interested on Monday? MAYBE because he was played in his preferred position... Looked the part for someone who has had such little football this season. Strong full of running good quick feet and a splendid finish for the first. I see him doing good things next season played up top with a striker in the vain of Crouchie. I think even Kanu still has a part to play..

we need a pacey striker.. dont know much about Leroy, scored a few for England u21, only 6 appearances this season though. Some other players out of contract that may be of interest / Nicky Hunt, Andy van der Meyde, Danny Murphy, Maniche, Yohann Pele, Modeste M'Bami and definatley Daniel Sturridge!

I knew his name would come up again, he looked a useful player when he first started in the premiership with Reading but he's been available for some time now, reading were quite happy for him to leave and absolutely nobody seems interested that must say something about him.

I had thought Lita was a good shout, but now I hear about him being a trouble maker I'm not so sure. Then again, I think Hart can handle that - so maybe worth a go on a free transfer if his wage demands aren't too high. Bluedr - I'm struggling to see why we'd want Hahnemann unless he'd be prepared to be 3rd choice to Jamo and Begovic?

yeah hes a good littlke player when i have seen him. i would sign him up on a free. then sell nugent for 4million. its all about making money now for pompey..

would like to see HUNT from reading hes a good little player and gets goals from middfield. offer them 3.5million see what they do. also doyle is a top striker !! got 15 goals in the premiership last year. 5million would get him.

Bit worried about the trouble maker bit. Lita could be a asset if on a free. I'm sure there will be players who will be made avaiable in the next months. I hope we keep what buying power we have and strenghten up the midfield

Not sure on comapring Lita with Defoe, however an average championship player in the prem!!! No brainer really. No. We should be able to have a good crack at many other strikers that may be the top 8 clubs don't want.

Simon Cox at Swindon has been scoring for fun and there are lots of clubs interested in him. Value £1.25m and bags of potential. In our situation we can't afford proven strikers we have to take some risks. Would Nugent turned out better if he had played in his natural position and had a run of games earlier. HR didn't fancy him so why did he buy him?

What about the clubs that are going down? There's still the question of whether GON is coming back - what other players might we want to raid from them? Especially if the barcodes go.
