Staying an 'option' for Pennant

Staying an 'option' for Pennant

The fact that Jermaine Pennant is a 'free agent' in the summer has of course not gone unnoticed, none more so than with the player himself.

He has told sky sports news that he is 'open to offers', and staying with Pompey is 'always going to be an option' as he has 'enjoyed his time' here.

The winger says that he has not had any offers yet, but 'links' with Everton and Wigan have grown in recent weeks, although there has not really been much talk along the lines of him staying at Fratton, which is a shame as I would be more than happy for him to do so.

At the moment Pennant says 'I've got a battle on my hands at the minute with Portsmouth fighting relegation' but after than he plans to 'take a break and then take it from there.'

I know the guy probably would not come cheap, but we will need to bring in some players - free transfers are looking our best bet, and whilst these are not really 'free' I am not sure we will get many better than Pennant, who would have a fine career with Pompey I feel - without a doubt if we actually played him, and played him from the start and gave him the strikers, notice I say 'strikers', as in plural not singular, to pick out he will!

Lets not think we are his first option though, in all honesty we probably are not and he is inviting offers as well: 'I'm all ears and I'm ready to talk to people.'

I would happily see him stay, although to be honest I am not overly hopeful, or even confident that we will even give him the opportunity to do so...

Yeah I would like to see the guy stay and get rid of that clown Utaka, who can't play down the right or anywhere else for that matter. Hoepfully if we are safe before the Sunderrland game we might see him start along with two up front in the form of Crouchie and Nugget

It would be great to see him stay, but I can imagine that Wigan may look at him as an ideal replacement to Valencia.

Can't disagree blarmy Utaka has always blown hot and cold (mostly freezing tbh) and Pennant is a far better player.

Have always liked it when Pennant plays. As you say, he can find the striker(s).

Been OK since he joined us but nothing special, we have to remember we have underperformed this season so think any decent offers for players should be accepted. Time for a new start!

Not overally convinced he is that special. He'll go with best offer for him & sentiment won't come into it. We have been a wage paying shop window for him & nothing more!

pennant plays at a decent level, fairly consistently. If we can keep him, on a modest wage, go for it!

I would love Pennant to stay here, he's an exciting player, gives us attacking options. Wasn't he playing for England not so long ago?

He'd be a good permanent addition, especially in an attack minded team. Remember, the players have to play as per their instructions so it can't be easy for him to play defensively. I think with Steve Coppell in charge he's be given free reign.
