Johnson 'rumours' begin

Reports in The Mirror today 'claim' that we have slapped a £16m price tag on Glen Johnson's head with this price 'already quoted to a big European club' and we 'intend to hold out for the full fee to cut debts'.

I think we have all just about accepted that a player or two will leave this summer for big money and one of these players with unfortunately be Johnson.

£16m would be a hell of a good price for him, and a price that is far too good to refuse - we just have to make sure we do stick to our guns and do not lower the valuation, we have done this with other players recently so lets carry on doing this with the best right back in the country!

The report also 'claimed' that we 'will not be tempted by swap deals'; we will only be dealing in 'cash'.

Unsurprisingly Spurs are being 'linked', as are Villa and Liverpool - my feelings are that he will almost certainly leave to join Liverpool.

That is an obvious step-up in quality, team wise and ability to win honours wise, and I could fully understand him wanting to do that. What is more, I would also fully expect him to hold down the right back spot at Anfield without any problems, as the right back area is an area they have had problems with.

I have no problem with him going, I fully expected him to go last summer, so having him for one more season has bee a real bonus. It's frightening to think just how good he will end up at a team like the Scouse.

i think the new contact was always only ever a 'we will keep him in january at all costs' thing to warn people off him at that time - i suspect we also said to him that if he signed this we would let him go in the summer if a 'suitable' offer came in...
i would love him to stay this summer, but it aint gonna happen is it, unfortunately we need to 'cash in' in sizable assets to help clear the debts and they arent anymore sizable than johnson at the moment.

very true..i remember hearing a rumour that as part of the contract, if a club came in with 10-12m for him he could go. Guess we've done well to keep him this far.

His attitude and approach let alone performances have been exemplary. Even if away with others he qualifys as one of our best ever. I would not be surprised if Chelsea did not want him back

I don't think Spurs need him tbh. Liverpool are saying that they have to sell to buy this summer, Chelsea probably the same. Don't think money will be easy for anyone.

i think weve done a brilliant job of maturing johnson, when he first came here on loan, he was a bit naive and inexperienced (even though coming from chelsea) we did brilliantly to bring him perma to the club and weve seen him develop into the best right back in the country. £16m is a good price, id obviously want more! :)

knew he would go but what a player. But why dont we have a swap and cash with johno. If he goes to livepool maybe pennant as the player to come or if tottenham get him maybe deoe back lol jokes i wouldnt mind hutton who they have he is a good sottish international who likes to attack.

love watching him play but that is alot of money and hes bound to be on a wedge so a reluctant sale, i would sell to spurs but only because i think they have better players that could come here, bent, huddlestone, giovani, jenas, hutton. i dont actually believe that money only thing either, due to 15 players leaving and alot of them are the ones crippling our wage bill. with 15 players leaving i think that perhaps 3 spare spurs players would be a fair swop.

Very reluctant sale, but I hope he goes to a bigger and better club and gets the recognition he deserves. That kind of money will help us too. As for half that - why would we let him go for less than he's worth when he's on a long contract? We might be a bit skint but we're not soft in the head.

Will really be gutted if he leaves,I think his time with us has helped him as a player and we have been lucky to have such a skill in our team.

spurs would certainly not be intrested in him. We have 4 international Right backs at the club in young Gunter,Corluka,Chimbonda and hutton. I dont see why we need a fifth.If anything we would want to sell one of them and you could be potential buyers as Jhonson will depart to Liverpool.

thing is yid only one of those you listed was brought in by harry, expect a big overhaul of players he didnt. im sure alot of this seasons short comings can be blamed on his predecessor.

you will learn in time Yid_from that 'what you need' and 'what you actually get' are not one in the same from jamie's dad... you say you do not need another right back, you might think that 4 is enough for you but 'he' didnt buy any of them, well apart from chimbonda, so until he has bought a whole team that is his own he wont be happy - he will be in for him in the summer, i just hope that we do not cash in too cheap and let his talent be wasted at spurs, johnson is a top 4 player, and spurs are not going to be a consisten top 4 team for some time...

16 million? we could get more than that! surely! Particually as without him, we will really struggle to stay up next season - which would cost 30 million!

lets remember he is a defender tho, and a full back at that and to get anything more than £16m would be really pushing it - i think we would settle for that... would love to be able to keep him, but it just isnt going to happen is it?
