James - we have finally replaced 'him'

There is a little 'snippet' in one of the morning papers today, I think it is The Mirror, where David James gives Paul Hart - and of course Brian Kidd - his full backing.

The 'suggestion' that is given is that he feels we have finally found the man to replace Jamie's Dad, or at least 'finally rediscovered the spirit' that we had under him: 'we had something very good last season and it has now returned with Harty and Kiddo.

'If the club wants a replication of last year's displays, they have got the right people in place.'

Have we done this?
If so then as much as I might not like the idea now maybe Hart is the man to take us forward?

One of the few problems for me is I can still see a few players going this summer, so will that 'spirit' and 'togetherness' carry on next season if he remained in charge?

Probably my gravest concerns are the 'negative approach' ones, 38 games of that will not only leave me bored to tears and thinking 'why am I wasting my money on this' but more importantly still leaves me seriously concerned that Hart would not see the season out! - Sorry to bang on about that again, but 'if' that happened, as I keep saying, we will lose a guy that is our best shot in many a year of helping us produce a constant stream of talented youngsters through the academy.

Finding, grooming and developing kids into talented international players is what he does best!

Clearly the defence has been sorted out, so it has been suggested that other areas will now be worked on - the worrying thing is it is not beyond the realms of possibility that the current back 4, I exclude James as unless 'pushed' he will go nowhere, 'could' change 100% between the end of this season and the beginning of the next!

Glen Johnson will unfortunately be sold - I think we have accepted that, Sol Campbell and The Herminator could both be released and Sylvain Distin may well seek pastures new?

In which case we have to build from the back all over again...

I like the thought that the real 'spirit' and 'togetherness' that we had under 'him' is back, and this is worth a hell of a lot to us, but we need to get things right on the pitch too - ideally Hart will use the last 3-4 games to show the other side to his managerial skills - if there is another side? - and prove that he can get the balance right?

But another thing that I keep coming back to is if he was really a premier league manager, well a manager full stop, why has he held few jobs, and for such short times in the main each time, over the past 20-years or so as an out and out 1st team manager?

I do not like to keep going over this issue, but just when I think I have 100% in my mind confirmed that he is not the right man over the course of next season something, like James' thoughts, throws a spanner in the works - although when all is said and done it does not matter what you or I think does it, if Peter Storrie and Sacha Gaydamak want to appoint him in the summer they will!

The closer the summer gets, the more it becomes clear that there are so many, many 'important decisions' that need to be made during it, and the clearer still it becomes just how crucial these decisions will be - it is a huge summer we have ahead of us, and a summer that we must get right...

i know, i know, i probably should 'get over it' but the thought of even putting an image of jamie's dad on an article angered me...with too many 'happy, smiling, thumbs up, winking' images to go with this was the one that i was most 'happy' to use as i guess is shows a range of managers/coaches that we have had during this difficult season...
that said, back to the point... discuss the above article now :-)

I'm undecided on this one. I don't think Hart gets the credit he deserves from some of our fans. (Booing your own team is inexcusable imo) He was called upon to step out of his comfort zone and take on the huge responsibility of keeping us up and you could argue hes done it with four games to go. I doubt very much that he put his hand up when Storrie was looking for volunteers! Since he's taken over we've only lost to Utd and Chelsea, both Champs league semi-finalists. On the flipside, we don't know how much of this can be attributed to Brian Kidd and if the rumours of him heading back north at the end of the season are true, i'm not sure I'd want Hart in charge coupled with an 'inferior' (to Kidd) number 2. - I'm not saying Hart should be given the job, just that he shouldnt be overlooked.

The trouble is we have no idea if he can be more expansive (good word that). As you say he may relax a little before the end of the season. As for players leaving, I think whoever is in charge would have problems retaining the spirit that we have at the moment. As they say, only time will tell. PUP

yep expansive is a top word NorfolknBlue, i will be using that next time - as there will be a next time on the 'should we, shouldnt we' give him the job - arsenal will come looking for a win on saturday, so maybe we will see that 'expansive' side of his management then. i think, to be fair, there have been a few glimmers here and there that he 'might' do this...

its a tough one isnt it SUAC51 i do not want hart in charge, but part of me thinks 'maybe'... if we took kidd away then i think we would see a difference, and not for the better! so who is kidd being linked with? not a return to manyoo?
as for the booing, totally agree i never have, and never will boo anyone regardless as to what is going on - i cannot understand what the benefits of doing this are?

I think I read something that linked Kiddo with Keane at Ipswich?

I think Hart has done a marvellous job, and NO ONE should underestimate the words of the Players. If they genuinely feel the way towards Hart as they did Redknapp, then maybe Hart has just always been in the wrong place at the wrong time, and maybe we have unearthed a gem of a manager. I dont think Kidd will leave if Hart was given the job, i think this is just his intentions IF hart does not get the job. I hate the booing, and have booed the officials a couple of times, only to regret that too later, as it could appear to be towards the players - Not so... Never. I also think Hart has started sounding a bit more upset over critism of the club, the team, and himself... This maybe because initially he was pushed into it, but now he actually wants it. 2 loses in 10 (Chelsea and Man U), having to play defensive to secure our possition, and lift a team who have had the Hero prove what a selfish arse he is by leaving overnight, and then the disappointment they felt under Adams. Next season, i think you would see a different Hart, a deffierent approach, and more like the top 10 team we were last season. Happiness breads pride, worry spreads doom and gloom. The sun is out, the team are safe (IMO) so enjoy the rest of the season and lets please get a chorus of Paul Harts Blue and White Army, so he knows NOT everyone is against him, only the vocal minority.

I think the guy is doing what he was employed to do, and that was to keep us in the big boys league. I don't personally agree with some of the players we are seeing out there each week, but if we cab guarantee safety then hopefully he will maybe bring on Gekas in a 4-4-2 with Crouchie and try a few different things out. I also think that Kidd is the main driving force and that Hart is just the front man. Still reckon Sven will come and team up with Kidd again.

If we do lose our best players this summer the only chance of avoiding relegation will be to play like we've been doing under Paul Hart (whether the fans like it or not) so for this reason I think we should stick with him and Brian Kidd. On the other hand if we are bought and the new owner has money to spend maybe we should go for an experienced premier league manager but who should it be? I don't see too many good candidates out there looking for work.

Dont get me wrong, i would be happier if we knew we were going to be keeping Hart by putting back in the youth set up, as opposed to the club sacking him in anyear or so, and losing out in that area, but i do feel fans have been too negative about the bloke, he had a lot of negatives to try and turn into possitives, with 1/3 of a season to do it, and keep us up. Well done that Man. personally if we were to replace him at the end of the season, i would like Sven or Grant. I have a gut feeling it could be Curbs though, as he is still there waiting for a return to management.... So maybe an idea for a poll? Who would you prefer next season? Hart? Sven? Grant? Curbs or Hullet? (Excuse Spelling)

I understand your thoughts on the negative play Rug, but along with a fair proportion believe he is only delivering what his bosses have asked for.....and no doubt for a healthy bonus if he achieves it! It is a difficult decision, I would like to see some more flair in the side and indeed some intent going forward. That said the win against Bolton was an entertaining game (in its own way), and I think we do need to walk before we run. Maybe he does deserve a chance as the main man, the big cheese, the head honcho, numero uno (I could go on) but then we need to find a good replacement for our fledgling academy. Good luck to the blues against the ARS, I will miss it unfortunately due to work, but look forward to definitely securing safety against Sunderland PUP. Expansively Yours BarneyArmy

judging by the state we were in before Hart and Kidd took over I reckon that they should reap the benefits of keeping us up and handed the job for next season. Hart talks sensibly and is playing to our strengths. Our defence was woeful before Hart came in . Remember the James of old , making those mistakes , Distin non confident and Sol being overrun by anybody who bothered to run at him? Well look at them now , confidence skyhigh and a resilience that they are famed for. As for the boring 451 formation we have to accept the fact that we do not have a decent enough striker to partner Crouch up front ,so our attacking options as we are today have to start from the flanks via Johnson , Pennant , Herman and Belhadj. We do not possess the likes of Torres , DEFOE , Keane , Drogba or anyone else for that matter to partner our only Premier class option , that being Crouch. Lets thank our lucky stars that after what has happenrd this season we are nearly assured of another season with the big boys and hopefully build on it for the season.

it's dificult. I wouldn't mind too much if Hart+kidd stayed another year. However only becuase I think that with Kidd there, we will be fine. The idea of loosing johnson is horrific. He HAS to stay. We havn't won a game all season without him in the team. If at all possible, we should be trying to hold the squad together as much as possible. if we loose any of our key players, then next season, we will be going down - who ever is the manager.

I keep going hot and cold on this - it was a terrific performance on Monday night. I think we underestimated our management team as well - we worried that Shearer had sussed us out - when in fact Hart had sussed them out, he just didn't shout his mouth off about it. Hart was tasked to keep us up, he's doing it, I also think tactics might change next season, and perhaps later once we're mathematically safe. Rumours that Ipswich have come in for Kidd might force the club's hand into offering them both a longer term deal sooner rather than later. As for players, you have to expect any new manager to bring in his own men. Of course that depends on money, and none of us want to see too many of our stars go - but we can't expect Jamie's Dad's team to be the Pompey team for ever.

The problem will be how do replace the quality that goes in the summer. Whether sold or out of contract. With apparantly little money, not many can work a miacle these days! What connection/scouting has Hart in place? I fear he'll be the easy/cheap option & we'll struggle & he'll be sacked by xmas!

Personally I would want Bilic if not Hart as I believe that if the Croatian will come, Kranjcar will be staying for sure. Apart from that, Bilic can give us some more importance in the media as I believe he will be another Mourinho! I guess we do need that. Bilic knows the PL football and has an ability to command. However, he is being linked with Chelski.

I reckon lack of money will make Hart our choice for next season. Who knows, maybe it will be the best thing that ever happened to us. Hopefully, he is delivering what he has been asked to, and lets face it, he has had the nous to do it. Whats to say when the next season starts, he will have the knowhow to operate on a different level again. I am warming to him but I don't think I would want one half, Kidd must come with him.

Success starts at the back, having virtually eliminated the soft goals we were conceding I think Hart deserves the chance to carry on with the job. I respect the argument about his talent for bringing youth players through but in all honesty if he doesn't get the job will he want to stay and go back to his old role? Hart and Kidd together have done a great job in extremely difficult circumstances and it seems that senior players are behind them, that in its self is a good reason to keep them on. what ever the club does please not Sven, unless there is a mega money buy out in the wings.
