Should Hart get the job? No!

'Paul Hart should not be given the Pompey job permanently', not my vote, yours - although these findings from pentonpompey's poll are thoughts that I would agree with to be honest.

I have nothing against Paul Hart, he and Brian Kidd have just about done the job asked of them - 'keep us up at all costs!' And as Peter Storrie has asked I am 'thankful' to them both. I would keep Kidd as a coach in a heartbeat but do not think giving Hart the job is a good idea...

The apparent 'playing not to lose' as opposed to 'playing to win' mentality of Hart is not something that I like, that said it is essential that we stay up this season so 'maybe' his philosophy would be different given a clean canvas to begin with, which of course next season would give him.

Whilst the 10-15 players that I would expect to be released will not cause that much concern, as lets be honest most of these are doing little to earn their corn anyway are they, so they will not be missed. However the other 2-3 that 'probably will be sold' are going to be missed!

We cannot rely exclusively on 'bringing the kids through', yep I would like some but we would have to make a couple of 'shrewd moves' into the transfer market, and I am not convinced that Hart has the ability to do this with senior players as opposed to youngsters? That said Kidd must have some connections in the game to help us out...

My gravest concern is the one that Hart will not see the 09/10 season through!

The players and/or fans could round on him and we will end up with another 'Tony Adams' situation with him forced out - we then lose such an important figure at the club for our academy growth. The guy gives us our best chance of producing a constant stream of talent, and we lose that if we lose him as our manager, we lose that anyway as how can he manage the 1st team and overlook the academy as well? It is too much for one person to do!

Whatever we may think, and of course Vital Pompey does not speak for all fans does it, I think with Peter Storrie's latest words, on the Pompey Site, the job is going to them: 'they came in at a time when we had gained only two points from nine games and were heading towards the bottom three.

'In the nine games since we have picked up 13 points and lost only to Chelsea and Manchester United - two teams in the Champions League semi-finals this week.

'They have more than steadied the ship and we have once again become a team that is very difficult to beat.

'They have been a class act from the day they took over. They have bags of experience and have the respect of all the players.

'They complement each other and I'm delighted how the results and performances have gone.'

'When' safety is confirmed, not 'if', they are nailed on for the job - unless we are taken over in the summer...

From a personal point of view with home games alone costing me 60-80 each - that is an average of around 40ish quid for the ticket when the season ticket cost as is worked out, plus at least 20 for train fares, at their cheapest, usually more along the lines of 25-40 - for each home game before beer and what have you that is hell of a lot of money to fork out, and I want to be entertained for this money!

Granted being entertained and us losing each week is not much consolation, but 'setting out for a 0-0 each week and looking to sneak a 1-0 win' is not going to do much to appease me, and others, who shell out these vast amounts of cash, and in all honesty is not going to get us much next season anyway is it - ok, maybe 3 teams will be worse than us but it is a horrible way to go about things...

As said, 'hopefully' the mentality when approaching games would be different next season, and to be fair this has improved recently as the pressure has lifted. It would be good to go into the final couple of games, at least, this season being safe without a doubt and we 'might' get a better idea of what we could get next season from Hart?

  • What the poll asked - With Storrie's approval it appears Hart will be appointed our permanent manager. Do you want this?

  • How you voted - No 79%, Yes 21%

Before we move on what are your thoughts on what the last poll concluded? You know what to do, thoughts below please guys...

I'm with you pompey rug..don't want Hart as manager. Nothing against the man, just need a change. Can't see Kidd staying on unless Hart does so no doubt he'll go. Let's wait and see till the summer though, where finances will no doubt dictate things!!

I was one who voted against Paul Hart and feel dead ungrateful having done it. Do you realise that if we did win tonight, we are only 4 points behind His team and He started reviving that a long time before Hart was given the job of reviving Portsmouth (not to mention the money He was given to spend as well). You don't hear PH droning on about what he came into and what he has done, do you? I suppose I will have a clearer picture in my head after the next couple of weeks. Perhaps we will see a different side to Hart once we are safe. Still staying with what I originally voted, but am not feeling so comfortable about it now.....

i know what you mean Gandor, but maybe 'sentimentality' in giving TA the job, i wanted him and backed him all the way, got us into this position in the first place? of course 'him' going screwed us up royaly and unexpectedly didnt help... but would giving hart the job in the summer maybe not do the same thing? 'if' we had some indication that the style and mentality would be different then why not, but a season of playing for 0-0 draws in the hope of winning just wouldnt be good enough, and wouldnt keep us up then we would lose him from the academy side of things too...

I've always said no to Harty. I suppose to be fair we haven't been able to see what he can achieve when not in a struggle but I would be pretty fed up having bought my season ticket for 2009-10 to see a shed load of games like West Brom

No. Hope he keeps us up but you couldn't defend your way thru a whole season. Winning ugly is one thing but drawing & losing ugly every week would be bl00dy awful. We will lose some good players during the summer. Can you see Hart having the network to attract top replacements???

I missed the vote but i would've been a don't know. I understand you want to be entertained Rug but would you have sacrificed Premiership Football for the entertainment? Hart came in with one job to do this season and so far it looks like he will do it. I can't knock the man for the teams style in the current situation. None of us know how things would be if his remit was different. Personally i think we would see a very different attitude to the game if the axe of relegation was removed from over the teams heads.

for me, it's nothing to do with the entertainment. At the moment, we have a man who is the best in his buisness - bringing young players through to the first team. we have invested quite a bit in our youth team - and so to have our acadamy master being "played out of position" is just pointless.

SteveC, not sure that i made it very clear really, so i can see the slight miss-understanding - my views about the entertainment factor were for next season, i accepted a few weeks back that basically we rip up the rule books this season we stay up by hook or crook and get the points however we do it as going down this season would be disasterous for pompey, i really think it could kill us off...
thats another thing i considered too, 'if' we knew that the attitude and mentality would be different without relegation hanging over us maybe things would be different, in which case give him a go - i still worry about him being forced out by christmas, then where does that leave us... get the season done, then we take stock basically i guess.

I just wanted to make the point that we can't judge him on what he's done this season as he's doing what needs to be done. Brian Kidd is an excellent coach with superb contacts throughout the game and i just wonder if thier proven ability to get a job done might actually be just what we need. I can't see Brian Kidd being happy with a negative style of play unless the situation demands it. I would certainly rather have them than Erickson who i doubt will be able to do anything without a very large budget.

I hope Storrie keeps his options open. Plus doesnt Sascha still want to sell, i would predict that the new consortium who have probably been sitting back waiting to see if we are still a premiership club next season would like to choose there own man to lead the club to more trophies!

I am with you Gandor on this one; I voted against but do not know why, probably because everyone did so, even if I was one of the few who praised Hart everytime I got a chance on this site. However, now I am convinced - I want Hart. The thing is that we have seen him managing and know that he is capable of MANAGING a team unlike TA who wasn't able to do so. The only problem is that he has never been at any Premier club before as manager and has never been linked with top-flight players: that means that it won't be easy to get players in, unlike He used to do. This was also evident under TA, as almost no one wanted to play for him, including Pennant. But besides all this, I am sure that Hart knows the football match and can alter his famous (now historic) 4-5-1 formation.

We must not take the easy option and appoint Paul Hart. My point is simple.. If he was manager material why wasn't he considered before .. Spells at Chesterfeild 20 years ago, Forest 15 years ago, Barnsley 5 years ago and more recently R&D four years ago .. do not suggest he's somebody who could build a team and take us through what will be a very difficult season next year - I say thanks Paul .. but please return to the Academy where you're skills are second to none left a man with experience take the reigns... Who that is though I don't know ...
