Pompey, lets be honest, have not had a great season - but lets also look at it this way it 'could' have been a lot worse - and to be fair 'if' we finish the season strongly we have a fine chance of finishing in the top 10 again, which in itself is good enough for me, but given the position we have been in for most of the season would be some achievement really...
Anyway, some players have had very good seasons, none more so than Glen Johnson, and this has earned him the spot of right back in the PFA Team of the Year.
So, Johnson is in very good company, but are we really surprised as he does not look out of place in the presence of such players anyway does he - thoughts that make it all the more unlikely that we will be able to keep him beyond the end of this season, but you never know...
The footballer named as the Player of the Year was Ryan Giggs. Hmm, I am not sure on that one to be honest! Whilst no one can doubt that he has been one of Britain's greatest ever talents, and has been at the top, or near the top, of his game for almost 2 decades this smacks of 'sentimentality' for me as it was now or never for a player who probably should have already won this award. Has he really been the best player over the course of the season?
Clearly votes, as to who even makes the shortlist, are cast far too early in the season - they are not a true reflection of the season as a whole and with t'internet a means of instant communication could the PFA not look to this as a means of casting the players votes in the future?
The young Player of the Year went to Ashley Young, which is probably fair enough - but again my thinking is this 'young player' business needs a bit of a rethink as I am pretty sure this covers anyone up to the age of 23, and in this day and age 23 is not exactly young is it? I would make 21 the cut off point...
Anyway, congratulations to the winners and congratulations to Pompey - through Johnson and Villa - through Young - for breaking up the top 3's domination on the Team of the Year, although Chelski only had the one player in it anyway and the rest, bar 2 from Liverpool, were Manyoo!
PLAY UP POMPEY!
