Johnson named in PFA Team of the Year

Pompey, lets be honest, have not had a great season - but lets also look at it this way it 'could' have been a lot worse - and to be fair 'if' we finish the season strongly we have a fine chance of finishing in the top 10 again, which in itself is good enough for me, but given the position we have been in for most of the season would be some achievement really...

Anyway, some players have had very good seasons, none more so than Glen Johnson, and this has earned him the spot of right back in the PFA Team of the Year.

So, Johnson is in very good company, but are we really surprised as he does not look out of place in the presence of such players anyway does he - thoughts that make it all the more unlikely that we will be able to keep him beyond the end of this season, but you never know...

The footballer named as the Player of the Year was Ryan Giggs. Hmm, I am not sure on that one to be honest! Whilst no one can doubt that he has been one of Britain's greatest ever talents, and has been at the top, or near the top, of his game for almost 2 decades this smacks of 'sentimentality' for me as it was now or never for a player who probably should have already won this award. Has he really been the best player over the course of the season?

Clearly votes, as to who even makes the shortlist, are cast far too early in the season - they are not a true reflection of the season as a whole and with t'internet a means of instant communication could the PFA not look to this as a means of casting the players votes in the future?

The young Player of the Year went to Ashley Young, which is probably fair enough - but again my thinking is this 'young player' business needs a bit of a rethink as I am pretty sure this covers anyone up to the age of 23, and in this day and age 23 is not exactly young is it? I would make 21 the cut off point...

Anyway, congratulations to the winners and congratulations to Pompey - through Johnson and Villa - through Young - for breaking up the top 3's domination on the Team of the Year, although Chelski only had the one player in it anyway and the rest, bar 2 from Liverpool, were Manyoo!

i was surprised that lampard didnt make the 6 nominations tbh mate - but when he wasnt with young given the young player, giggs the senior player and both he and gerrard nominated for the final 6 for the player of the year it wasnt possible for lampard to get into the team of the year was it tbh...

Thats some fine company jonno is keeping there. Fully deserved i'd say. we'll do well to keep hold of him in the summer though!

Yep, well done glen. It is further indication that he will no doubt be snapped up in the summer (probably liverpool) but hopefully it'll up his price tag a bit! And as for giggs, pure sentimental vote...12 starts and 1 goal, hardly player of the year material!!

There was a funny article in the paper yesterday about someone who emailed the FA to complain that Giggs was not a credible candidate and they emailed back to tell him to go to Zimbabwe if they wanted to see unfair voting in action. Good one, FA, nice to see a sense of proportion there.

Is it really thought that the backline of Manure has been that good this season? Ok yes they are top of the league but I think other players have been better. The likes of schwarzer or hangerland at Fulham have been outstanding, not to mention carragher at Liverpool. I think it as always is very short sighted in the voting, and no doubt if Manure had had a fit right back all season then Johnno would not have been in the team.

Well done to Glen. Head & shoulders our best player this season. Hard to imagine he won't be playing for a top team in red next season. Sasha would take 10-15m for him.

Got to agree about Giggs being player of the year. Surely more to do with length of career than performances this season - it is not the right decision.

As for Johnno easily the best right back in the Prem League and probably Pompey player of the year too.

Well deserved for Johnson - the assorted sports media should really rave about him a lot more than they do, he's becoming world class. I'm sure they will once he's moved to a bigger club.

not concerned by this p4me, manyoo are not short of right backs - they still, depsite him aging, have gary neville, wes brown, john o'shea and the 'real' future for them that rafael fella - he would go back to his chelski situation if he went to manyoo, so cannot see him falling for that...
i think the one we 'should' worry about it liverpool, the bin dippers have been chopping and changing fullbacks for a while now and johnson would be perfect for them, and i reckon they would be perfect for him - think he will be joining them in the summer tbh.

giggs for player of the year? errm... wtf! how?!? merlin - I totaly agree, lampard should have been in that team ahead of giggs (I still don;t understand how he was even nominated!). still, from pompeys point of view... one of two players outside of "big 4" teams, more players than arsenal, and the same number as chelsea. ...so, why arn't we in the top 6 again?

Schwarzer deserves to be goalkeeper rather than VDS, i havent seen VDS single-handedly save his team's ass in a match like schwarzer did against Boro last week
