The Pompey Chimes: 18th-25th April 2009

Welcome to the unofficial Pompey news round-up - your quick and easy Pompey news reference guide covering the last seven days.

Club News

Two games in five days this week, with Bolton first visiting Fratton on the Saturday, then a trip up to Old Trafford to face FA Cup Semi Finalists Manchester United.

Firstly, a much needed win against Bolton as Pompey dominated the game in the 1-0 win at Fratton Park. A goal from a corner that initially went down as a Belhadj goal as it looked to have gone in straight from the corner, but later turned out to have taken a touch from Kanu was the only difference between the two sides. Read the match report here, and read Pompey Malta's take on the game here, as he makes a convincing argument for hart to stay on as manager next season. Not sure I agree, but well worth a read!

Were you at the Bolton game? Check out the official site for a great little 'montage' video of the fans and see if you were caught by the cameras.

Pompey then travelled up to Manchester where they were comprehensively beaten 2-0 by Manchester United. Not a very good performance from the team, but the fans did us proud, which is doubly impressive given it was a midweek game! Read the match report here, and see Gleams' ratings of the players here.

West Ham Reserves came to town to take on Pompey Reserves last Tuesday, and none other than Theofanis Gekas scored the winner. If that's not a 'Come on Hart Play me' call I don't know what is, and you can read the match report here, and see the video of his goal on the Official Site.

Whilst you're watching the Gekas goal video, check out the video of the Pompey Academy game as they took on local rivals Reading Academy, beating them 4-3. Theo Walcott's cousin Jacob scored in this game for Reading. Also on the official site, read about how the Pompey Ladies dished out what can only be described as a 'bloody good hiding' as they beat Keynsham Town (WHO?!) 5-0 in the week. Those of you at the Bolton game nice and early would have seen the Ladies parade the Hampshire Cup around Fratton Park - if you missed it there's a video on the official site.

Peter Storrie has come forth and stated that Paul Hart is looking like the ideal candidate to take over Pompey full time. Personally, I really don't think this is the right way to go, but make up your own mind by reading this article here.

Another Pompey event, and the gold fanatics amongst you can play a round with Linvoy Primus! The Meon Valley Country and Golf Club is hosting Linvoy Primus Team Golf Classic on 29 June 2009, and to enter a team it'll set you back 350 per team of four. The price includes coffee and bacon rolls on arrival, 18 holes of competition golf, a four-course evening dinner, and an auction of football and golf memorabilia. Bargain in my eyes, unfortunately I'm pants at golf despite a few lessons! If you're interested, call 023 92 776823 or 07867 973415.

Check out the official site to watch a neat little video celebrating the life of Gentleman Jim Dickinson. The Pompey legend's wife was presented with an honorary award to celebrate his inauguration to the Pompey Hall of Fame.

Also on the official site, there's a video of Paul Hart giving an interview to PFCTV, explaining that 37 points is not enough to secure top flight status. Watch it, as it makes very interesting viewing.

Although not strictly Pompey news, the England Team are at the forefront of a bowel cancer awareness scheme. In the interests of promoting health, I therefore implore you to click here to read all about it.

Squad News

Due to the fact we had two games this week, there is way too much Pompey reaction to mention! The most noteworthy from the official site include Distin and Hart praising our Bolton performance, Kanu likening the Bolton game to Wembley, and Paul Hart stating that we 'made United sweat'. Not sure if I agree with that, but there you go.

In fact, you can see more of what Hart had to say, along with Rug's thoughts, here.

Also, following the United game, the official site states that despite the 2-0 loss, our team deserve praise for preventing a whitewash! Another good article, and one worth a read whether or not you agree with it - personally, again I don't. My opinion is that it could have been a lot more, and we were lucky to only concede two. Great atmosphere though so I've heard and I'm glad that the fans (that's us!) are getting behind the team!

Our Croatian midfielder Niko Kranjcar was injured against Bolton, with what initially looked like a bad injury, however an article on the Pompey site has confirmed that it's not as serious as first thought, and we should see him back in action this season.

Gino's Teaser

Last week's answer: Robert Prosinecki is the only player to have scored for two countries at World Cup Finals. Congratulations to Buddha14 again!

Now, as we have no Chimes next week, I'll set a big question:

Can you name the 15 players who have kept goal for United since Peter Schmeichel left?

Try and group as many together as you can in one comment, to save a flurry of comments!

Good read Gino. I though we picked up a little bit in the 2nd half of our game with ManU. Fergie certainly wasn't pleased they were unable to put the match to bed earlier. Here's hoping we get it right at Newcastle!
