Ashdown on his way/Niko 'targets win'

Ashdown finally set to move on?

Jamie Ashdown has always been a keeper that I have felt deserves to be more than a 'back-up', and if 'reports' in The Mirror are to be believed he could be set for his chance, as a move away from Pompey this summer could happen?

It is being said that Birmingham are looking to sign him in the summer after he 'rejected a fresh contract at Fratton Park'...

Rejected a new contract? Did I miss something? I did not even know we had offered him a new deal?

I have always felt that Ashdown is a keeper that would do a fantastic job with any championship club, or a mid-lower premier league side, which I of course include us in this bracket but as we have David James - and hopefully will for another couple of seasons - he is not going to get a look-in here is he.

Time will tell what the future will bring for him, but yep, moving on is the best thing for him to do in his own careers best interest methinks and if this is to replace the scummer at St Andrews then so be it...

'If' he does leave though, I hope he leaves and does become the no.1 somewhere, it would be horrible to see him leave only to be the no.2 elsewhere!

==========

Niko targets Bolton win - we all do mate!

'We all know it is not going to be easy between now and the end of the season, but it is important we stick together and work it out.

'Hopefully we can get a good win over Bolton at home on Saturday - that is the priority.'

This is what Niko Kranjcar told The Express today.

As for it being a 'good win' to be honest I do not really care how we do it, I just hope we win at the weekend - I am still disappointed about last weekend though as we now have extra pressure on us as I really do feel we need to win as 'playing for a point' is not good enough for a home game! Clearly a point is better than none though of course.

I think that the Croatian has picked up on a few glimpses that 'disharmony' is again surfacing in the dressing room, hence his 'it is important we stick together and work it out'.

Kranjcar, for me, had a fantastic game against West Brom last weekend and we will need to get more of the same this weekend - we also need more of an attacking look to our play, unfortunately I am not convinced that we will see this as it will be 'more of the same'...

The pressure is on this weekend, I know you have to let it go and move on, but we have made this game so much more difficult than it should have been - would it not have been better to have 'played for the win' against the Baggies and then 'played for the draw' against Bolton - in what would appear to have been the 'better' of the games to have drawn? But hey ho, what do I know.

Lets just hope that Paul Hart shares your views mate, and he too is out to 'go for the win', although, and I do not want it to seem like I am on an 'anti-Hart crusade' as I am not, I will not be holding my breath...

Is Begovic good enough to fill Ashdown's space on the bench? Well, if he is then fair enough let hi go. Ashdown came from Readng as a good prospect, but he's been as much as a bench warmer as Cudicini was at Chelski. With regard to Niko - glad he's staying positive and saying comments in the press NOT about a potential move. Hope he doesn't go, and hope Bilic convinces him to stay put at Pompey (when he takes over as manager of course).

Since when is it "news" that a team is planning to win a home game? Oh yes, under the regime of the Joyless One.

I have faith in Begovic the Canuck, I am a big admirer of him and he seems to have done well in the reserves, Trust me when i say this that Asmir will do wonders, he has been given big raps by England's no.1 David James. IN BEGOVIC I TRUST

A friend who has links with the club tells me Ashdown is seen very much as a number 2 and Begovic is the one they are expecting to replace James. Personally i've always thought Ashdown had the tools to be a very good keeper but it seems he won't get his chance at Pompey.

Never rated Ashdown as a number1, decent understudy but thats about it.

I don't understand why Ashdown has spent so long sitting on the bench waiting for something to happen to Jamo, I expected him to move on last year - good luck to him if he does. Re Niko's comment - him and me both - but it does look like there is disharmony and discontent in the dressing room. I suppose the seeds of this were sown when the man from Sandbanks went. But for now, that's what we have, hopefully in the not too distant future someone new will come in and rebuild his own team. Regarding Hart, I think he will stick with 'not losing'. But I've been mulling over Hart, and some of Mark Mudie's comments on the Quay. I think we need to remember he didn't put himself forward for the job, he's trying to step up for the club, and may well be a bit out of his depth. This doesn't make our situation any better, but it might explain it, and perhaps we should remember this and get behind the guy until someone else comes in in the summer.

Begovic will be ready, in say 3-4 seasons time...! Maybe another loan or 2 to a decent club etc.. Need Ashdown atm really, Begovic is a weak(er) back-up for James, if he were to get injured or whatever.

Paul Hart is doing a good job, maybe we're not playing free flowing football that we all love to watch but we've certainly got a streak of stubborness now that we needed. Only one thing matters this season and thats survival. take the pressure of relegation away and we'd be a better team to watch.

Begovic is a brilliant (well, good...) shot stopper - but (as with the down fall of most keepers) isn't much else. still, he would do a goodish job as a stand in. Kranjcar saying he wants a good win against bolton has nothing to do with the actuall score being "good" - I simply think he thinks a win against bolton would be good. which it would be. considering our circumstances.

Pompeycarpet, isnt stopping shots what a keeper job is to do? He seems to come off his line quite well and is a big boy, biggest in the team i think, apart from crouch.

Buddah14 - no! It's about inspiring confidence, coming out at the right time, staying on your line at the right time, catching the ball cleanly from crosses/corners, maintaining concentration through the long boring bits of the game, and getting it away quickly. Shot stopping is a very MINOR point in goal keeping! (how many times do we have to thank jamo for a "good save" compared to times he comes out to collect a cross, or is alert enough to collect the ball off the edge of the area?). Begovic has always excelled when the reserves have apeared to have been thrashed - when he has made strings of good saves - however in close, tight games, he has made mistakes which have cost the teams goals.

Always tough being the number 2 but you can't blame anyone wanting regular football. However the grass ain't always greener. Good luck to him anyway. Heaven help us if Jamo is unfit at any stage.
