'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Just.... Remember

Twenty years ago today thousands of football fans, young and old, men and women, made the journey from Liverpool and Nottingham to watch their respective teams in a FA Cup Semi-Final - Ninety-six of them never returned home

Those of us old enough to remember watching the events at Hillsborough on April 15th 1989 unfold on live television will never forget what we saw.

Those of you too young (or even unborn) at the time should take time to understand the events that led up to English football's most grievous loss of life.

Remember the 96 - May they never walk alone

this is something that will never go away and never be forgotten - and nor should it. this is something that has lived with many people day-in-day-out for the past 20-years and will carry on being the case for so many of them for every day to come. our thoughts are with those lost in the tragic event on 15-04-89, and of course their families...

I was too young to remember this, but looking at the scenes on TV over the years and watching the poignant football focus on saturday really brings it home. Tragic events that will never be forgotten, and I'll have a thought for the 96 today.

Just been to Anfield with two other Pompey fans and laid a red, white and blue tribute at the Memorial on behalf of all at Pompey Vital. I hope none of the members object Simple message,"Pompey and Liverpool, united in grief, we will never forget you, RIP" We had our scarves with us, and the supporters who we met were delighted to see us there, however we did not go into the service, that is for Liverpool and the relatives, we did not want to intrude, however every football fan was inside Anfield with them today. Pompey will never forget the 96

how could/should anyone have any objections Owens? today unites all football fans as one, this tragedy had an impact across the board so why should we not all unite and show our respects. totally agree with your thoughts tho about not going to the service - that part is of course for liverpool and relatives only.

I remember it. Trouble at football was a common occurence in those days, so when I turned on the TV and saw the match was delayed, that's what I thought it was. At first. In fact it was total incompetence by the authorities, football fans treated like cattle. The legacy of this disaster is that we get treated like human beings today, and our health and safety is looked out for. What an absolute tragedy it is that it took the lives of 96 people for this to happen. 96 people who just went to the football. All our thoughts should be with the families today. And well done, Owens, good call.

I am ashamed to admit that I did not take much notice of the Hillsborough disaster and so knew nothing about it. Both Geoffrey and I were shaken as we read of the events which led to the disaster in the link provided by Chix. I had no idea just how badly the Police and the authorities handled things. Good on you Owens.

Owens - I've just posted elsewhere that one of the most sobering things I have ever done in my life is tied a Pompey scarf to the Shankly Gates.. Nice touch mate. I published this article late last night and although it said very little it took me a good hour to get it right and yet all I did was just use a phrase I've heard so many times that just really puts football into perspective .. 'Ninety-six of them never returned home'..

Was working in London today but left at three to listen to the whole service on 5live as it got the end and they played the Fields of Anfield Road and then Gerry Marsden sang YNWA I had tears streaming down my face

you have done yourself, pompey and football proud today Owens - altho to be fair i think most people throughout the country, probably even the world, have done football proud today and paid tribute to the 96, who - and their families - deserve justice.
its been a really emotional day and seeing things on the news today have just brought home how truely sad it all is and that it 'could' have so easily have been any one of us...
hopefully dave can find out a link and we can all see the tribute that was laid - did you take any pictures at all, if so mail them through to me or something.

I only had my work phone, which does not have the camera facility, however i am sure that one of the other lads did take a couple of pictures when we were there, so i will speak to him as soon as he gets home to Shaftesbury later tonight. Also my wife is going past Anfield on her way to work tomorrow, and if we can explain to her how the camera works on her phone she has promised to have a go at taking a photo for you. So fingers crossed, all in all a very emotional occasion.
