Deal or no deal? Jermaine Pennant...

So, we have some 15 players out of contract in the summer (or seeing their loans with Pompey end) it is almost time to decide who deserves a new contract and who does not deserve the drippings from my nose, well ours noses!

I was going to look at them all together, but I think I will do them one at a time... Simple question, and as the bearded one would say, 'deal or no deal?'

Jermaine Pennant - loan ends

I have been open with my thoughts that I have not been a fan of his down the years. I do not like his off the field antics, but in fairness what he does on the pitch is the main thing - and this is something that he appears to be doing well for us. And again to give him due credit I think he has grown up and his off the field problems are behind him.

He has been putting himself in the shop window, but I also feel that a run of games has seen him show what he can do. Quality wise he must have it, you would not play for Arsenal and Liverpool if you did not have this and Milan and Madrid would not be looking at you, even as a 'bit part player', if you were not all that.

A lot depends on us staying up, which we will, and actually how much he enjoys it and potentially who is our manager next season, but I would not write off a permanent signing though.

Deal or no deal? Deal.

If we stay up, if he enjoys his loan here and if we offer him a fair deal then I can see him staying - a lot of 'ifs' though and that casts doubts over the whole issue...

He has really impressed me with the defensive side of his game, the support he has given Johno - when he has been the right back behind him - has been much better than I has suspected it would be, so he is much more of a team player than I thought to be honest!

I would be delighted to see him stay, but maybe my 'deal' thoughts are because this is what I 'want' not what I 'expect' to happen?

These are my thoughts, what about yours? As always please share them below...

He's impressed me in a blue shirt. Always fighting and fitting in well with what we've been trying to do as a team. I like him.

Jermaine Pennant is a player that Pompey need to have next season if we are thinking of not ending up in another relegation scrap. But it won't be easy for us to keep him as I am sure that he will be asking alot. I am sure that our owner won't be funding alot of money next season and I cannot see Storrie paying the wages of Krancjar, James, Johnson and Pennant altogether. Some must go. I do hope that Pennant won't be one of them.

DEAL DEAL DEAL DEAL DEAL DEAL DEAL!! He seems like he's enjoying his football again, and he's stayed out of trouble thus far. Pretty decent, and better than Utaka so Deal. Is Utaka's deal up this summer Rug? If not, why not?!

No deal. He was heralded as the winger to supply Crouchie with pin point crosses. Has he? No he has not. The only rider to this is if he will accept a 'fair' salary, which is unlikely, he is a decent player and all clubs need decent players - but not at a price.

Not sure. He may decide himself with his attitude over the coming months! If pressed I think he'll go & he'll want to go back to the London area.
