Crouch picks up knock playing for England

England strode to a comfortable 4-0 victory over a poor Slovakia side at Wembley tonight. The site editor pompeyrug was there but has not submitted a report so we try to review the game from the armchair.

Let us look at the Pompey players in particular -

David James - made two very good saves after spending most of the 45 minutes thinking of joining the unemployment queue. Sadly Ben Foster who replaced James at half-time had little chance to prove his worth as the visitors rarely came within his sights. Fabio Capello picked out the two saves from Jamo as crucial in his post match interview.

Glen Johnson played the full 90 minutes and looks so accomplished now at right back. Rarely troubled by the Slovakian raiders and found time to forage forward with good effect. A very good confident performance from the England right back for many years to come.

Peter Crouch came on at the end of the first half after injuries to both Emile Heskey and Carlton Cole. Capello obviously did not want to use the Pompey striker after he had struggled during week with a tight calf muscle.

In the second half Peter played with great confidence and was unlucky not to score when his goal bound header was knocked over the line by John Terry who was standing in an offside position. Worryingly Peter picked up a knock on the hip when being challenged by Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel. He was withdrawn in the last yen minutes as a precaution.

England will need him on Wednesday for the World Cup qualifier with the Ukraine at Wembley but more importantly Pompey need him next Saturday at Hull!! Capello seemed to think Crouchie would be OK for the next game.

Confidence seemed to ooze through the Pompey stars performances something which they did not show in England`s last game in Madrid. That was not however mirrored by Stewart Downing who plays for fellow strugglers Middlesbrough, every touch of the ball was nervous and every cross hit the front man if it got that far. I think this shows how much happier the Pompey players are how under their new management at club and country.

crouch came on in the first half, but played well. Jamo had a good game, and Johnson was very good too (most ratings have him as our best defender, and one of the best players overall... up with the likes of gerrard!)

Great report Dave - glad to see Pompey's players representing England regularly - just shows we have the quality to stay up!

I was a bit annoyed that Crouch came on, I thought they said he wouldn't play as he was still recovering from the tight calf. Was quite worried when he went off injured, but it seems he's OK so fingers crossed. Jamo did really well, but it won't stop the nation in general having a go at him. As for Johnson, what a superstar - but aren't the national media quiet about him. If he played for one of the big 4 - or even Villa, Citeh or Spuds they'd be raving on and on about him by now. Fingers crossed for an injury free victory over Ukraine on Wednesday night.

By the way - did anybody notice that Gekas scored for Greece tonight. I wonder if Hart went out to Israel to catch a rare chance to see his own player actually play. If so, will he make the bench? I guess he does have ability, but I still question the attitude.

Been out tonight but pleased ur boys gave a good account of themselves. Bit worried about Crouchie, surely of all our players, he is the one who most needs a rest. We want him all guns blazing for next Saturday.

Next game Hull Away, the only team that has lost more home games than ourselves. On another bright note there are also only 8 teams that have lost less games than us away.

Disgusting how Crouch fouled Skrtel's foot with his hip, he should take a good look at himself, saw Gekas' goal this morning, proper poachers goal tracy

Hope Crouchy will be ok. Gekas scored against Israel, Ben Sahar got a booking.

Please please please, give Gekas a go at Hull, he does look like the real deal up front, surely it is not too late to give him a run. We need all the players to be available for the last few games, so let him prove the management team wrong. When Crouch started to limp we all probably thought the same thing, i know i nearly dropped my tea!!

We need all the players in the squad, he and Pele have got to be available and at times be given a go, the same for Bassinas and Papa when he is ready. If we need to change things around Hart and Kidd need the options on the bench, please look further than Hughes, Kanu and Pamarot, where is Traore, what has he done to be left out in the cold?

Matt, Crouchie fouled Skrtel by thrusting his hip at his boot, one of the worst fouls that Crouchie has committed, and he should be ashamed of himself. I think he was sent to bed with no supper!!

All the Pompey lads played well, but Rooney was out of this world, and his linking with Gerrard was great. Imagine those two in the same team in the PL!
