Deal or no deal? Kanu...

So, we have some 15 players out of contract in the summer (or seeing their loans with Pompey end) it is almost time to decide who deserves a new contract and who does not deserve the drippings from my nose, well ours noses!

I was going to look at them all together, but I think I will do them one at a time... Simple question, and as the bearded one would say, 'deal or no deal?'

Kanu

I still say that it was not him that won us the FA cup, yep it was his goal that got us into the final and also won it - but it was a team effort, and to say that he won us the cup is like saying it was Jamie's Dads cup, it was Portsmouth Football Club's cup, a team effort.

Anyway, off point really, where was I? Oh yea, the guy has been a top class footballer, he has offered the game so much, but the key word I think you need to look at is the fact that I keep saying 'has' with what I do say.

Off the bench he can still do a job this season, and he has, again against Everton he showed this and had he been used at Boro I think we would be all but safe by now, but hey ho! I think that he has had the last deal he could and should get from the club - to be honest I make no secret of the fact that I think he should have gone after the cup final, but could understand to a degree why he got his deal but we are not a charity case!

He has got to be on around 40,000, maybe more, a week as well so another big earner that I think we need to get off the wage bill, especially when you think about what he will actually offer us for what we give him.

'Reports' at the weekend claim Middle East interest, so it will either be that or Australia for me, and good luck to the guy.

Deal or no deal? No deal.

I thank him for what he has done here, but we have helped him too, so lets not forget that fact - we rescued him from the football scrap heap did we not?

We have both had our benefits, time for the waves to part amicably.

These are my thoughts, what about yours? As always please share them below...

For me it's a tough one. Yes I would love to see him stay as he still has the control, and is able to slow the game down when the rest of the players may look a bit headless unlike any other player that I know. He is as you say though without a doubt over payed for his 'bit' part role that he now has. Bring the wages right down and I say give him an offer for one further year.

I agree with you Rug. He's done very well for us and all, but he's getting on a bit now, and good luck to hm in the future. We can't justify his wages.

Agree with you Rug, he has got the ability to do some wonderfull things with a ball, but he also has no running left in him and through his laid back attitude he does lose the ball a fair bit nowadays. I don't think we can keep him just on sentimentality now, especially on his wages.

I'm with Sneakay on this. Lower his wages and keep him as a bit part player. Still has incredible skill, even though his poor old joints are seizing up.

Well done to King Kanu because he did play a big part in us winning the cup. I still think he has a role to play as although he looks like he can hardly run, he can still pop up with the odd goal here and there, and can be an effective sub. But I think he had this season as reward for his role in the cup run, and next season is probably one too far. Good luck to the King, and thank you, but no deal.

Did anyone see that Steptoe and Son film where they put the old horse out to grass in a big field with lots of nice lady horses? That's the sort of thing, really, isn't it but perhaps without interpreting this as a hint of unnatural practices.

No deal, was lucky to get one this season. Does this mean he'll have to do a pre-season? I think that'd kill him.

Thanks for all you done, but no more on offer, unless of course he would accept 10k a week, I reckon Qatar will come calling for him

No deal, though I was impressed with his efforts against Everton

if quatar want to pay him 50k a week, let them. If we can get away with paying him 5-10k a week (for mostly sitting on the bench... if he's lucky!) then deal. Purely becuase he acts as a draw to african players, a mentor to the likes of crouch (who's style is remarkably similer), and an inspiration to our younger strikers.

I think that Kanu is getting too old for another Premier League campaign. No deal I would say... Kanu can hardly run, and we do need people up front who can run and do things Crouch can't do (If he will remain). We will never forget his FA Cup winning goal, but it is time he accept our kind goodbye.

Two years ago I was totally against his one year contract... Last season I thought he was taking the micky and came to despise the guy as a money grabbing so and so... Last year I just couldn't understand why Sandras husband wouldn't show him the door.. but this year more than any other for me I think he now understands what he can't do and as a result is a better player for us... Question is on his salary can we really afford a player who does what he wants (off the pitch) and demands a high salary.. Nah I don't think so. He's written into Pompey folklore along with the great and provided us with a moment we will savoir for the rest of our lives.. No deal but offer him the use of Fratton Park for his charity games any time he wants it ...
