England call on James, Johnson and Crouch

Once again England coach Fabio Capello has called up Pompey trio David James, Glen Johnson and Peter Crouch.

The trio have become regulars in the squad and will be looking to increase their caps during the weekend friendly with Slovakia before the world cup qualifier with Ukraine a week Wednesday - both games are at Wembley.

Should James feature in both that will take him up to 48 caps as he creeps ever closer to the milestone of 50. His biggest rival for the no.1 shirt at the moment appears to be Ben Foster - who despite very, very limited football this season has been called in off the back of his league cup final showing.

Johnson looks a shoe-in to be the first choice right back, so will be hoping to add to his 11 caps, while Crouch currently has 31, scoring 14 goals in the process - his recent goalscoring form, coupled with his form on the whole will be something that he hopes can earn him a start or two?

Whatever happens, and hopefully they can play a part for England, we just need to pray that they - and the rest of our international contingent - return fit and well for the crucial meeting with Hull in a couple of weeks time...

It would have been a major surprise if they had not all been selected. Expect Jamo to be given a rest for Slovakia friendly as Capello tries out the inexperienced Green and Foster. Happy days still though three in an England party - would never have dreamed of that a few years ago!

As you say Dave it would have been a real suprise for them to be left out of the 30 man squad! Let's hope that after scoring 3 in 2 Crouch can keep his place and stay past the cut this week.

jamo will play the first half of slovakia, and then maybe foster will come on... or maybe he won't even make the final squad (depending on the reasoning behind fabios selection...). Johnson could start against slovakia, and if he does, he will probably start against ukraine. to be honest, I can't think what competition he has for his starting place? Crouch is the "in form" striker at the moment. I would be surprised if he didn't get on the pitch at some point in the games.

i reckon all 3 will play some part of both games - i know the friendly is ideal to look at both hart and foster, but that does not seem to be the capello way does it...
it would be tempting to go back to wembley to watch england but i do not think that i will be going back to the national stadium again...well unless it involves pompey!

Love the fact that Crouch has won man of the match and the holiday in Malta, Should he choose to take up the offer, he will be at least three feet taller than most of the inhabitants of the land of my ancestors.

rug - Hart isn't in the squad. that would be Green (i think?). And I think you would have to expect one of them to play there part in the game - although I think foster was more included purely becuase Fabio was intrigued by the hype, and wanted to see what he was like in training. not becuase he actually wants to play him. ...or at least thats why I would have picked him.
