The Pompey Chimes: 14th March-21st March 2009
Welcome to the unofficial Pompey news round-up.
I would have liked to begin the second Pompey Chimes edition with news of a great win, but unfortunately Pompey were held to a 1-1 draw at the Riverside Stadium against Middlesbrough. Peter Crouch's first Premier League goal since 20th December 2008 wasn't enough to give Pompey all three points, as Marlon King equalised in the last minute. I think we all know the ins and outs, but just in case you missed anything check out more details below:
Player Ratings Courtesy of Owenspompey - thanks for doing those, and remember if anyone else wishes to rate players after any game, then give Rug a shout using the envelope next to his name in the top right corner of this page.
From the first team to the reserves, who took on Stoke at the Britannia Stadium on Tuesday evening. Linvoy Primus was the only senior face in a young reserves side, which featured some academy players who were rewarded for their part in the 3-0 win at Charlton. Pompey beat Stoke 1-0 with Academy star Danny Bogard getting the only goal in the last minute. The match report and video for the reserve game and the academy game can, as always, be found on the Official website.
Pompey Ladies were also in action this week, however unfortunately they lost 2-1 to Ipswich Town. Full Report on the Official Website.
Back to first team affairs now and post-Middlesbrough Paul Hart conceded that he felt disappointed that we didn't take away all three points. He also partially took the blame for the result, stating that "I could quite easily have pushed somebody on. I could have opened up the game, so on that score I don't think you can blame the players but we decided to shore up and try to get a result", adding that "our performances were tremendous". My opinion of this is well done to Paul Hart, trying to divert the blame from the players and keep confidence at a high. Watch the video on the official website.
Portsmouth Football Club have made yet another decision on the future of Portsmouth Football Club. More stadium news has been announced, read Dave's article here and also check out the official website for more details.
On Thursday, the Pompey Fan's Forum took place at the marquee next to Fratton Park, and Vital's very own Gandor went along and took minutes for the benefit of those Vital Members that couldn't make it. Read her report here.
As usual, plenty of squad reaction to Pompey's draw with Middlesbrough. Peter Crouch says that we really shouldn't have dropped points, and Hayden Mullins described the draw as 'utterly disappointing'. Check out the official site for video reaction from Crouchy.
Pompey have been dealt a heavy blow as Pennant has been ruled out of the game against Everton. Read more here . Pennant's been looking quite tasty lately, so I for one am not happy he'll be missing out.
Glen Johnson is holding a charity dinner on 15th April 2009 in aid of the Make A Wish Foundation. It promises to be a fun evening with the Pompey favourite, and the £75 per person price tag includes a 4 course meal and entertainment, half a bottle of wine and more including live music and an auction. A table of ten gives each person a five pound discount (£700), and if any of you are interested in attending, then give Matt Longhurst a call on 07956 885772, or email on email@example.com.
John Utaka, Glen Johnson and Hayden Mullins are joining local pupils at the Mary Rose Special School in cycling from Beijing to Portsmouth in time for the Olympics. No passports required though, as the cycle is based entirely in Portsmouth and involves cycling the equivalent distance - 5,070 miles. The trio started the first few miles off, more information on the official site.
Little-seen striker Theofanis Gekas has hit out about the distinct lack of pitch-time, and admits he has been left puzzled as to why he was brought in and not utilised. To be honest, I think most Pompey fans are wondering why we haven't yet seen our new January signings in action, but see Rug's take on it here.
Ahead of the Everton game, Nugent and Niko have spoken of their confidence ahead of the game. Everton fan Nugent is promising no special treatment, whilst Niko praises Paul Hart's tactics as he plays in his favoured attacking midfield position. See the videos on the official site.
