Deal or no deal? Sean Davis...

So, we have some 15 players out of contract in the summer (or seeing their loans with Pompey end) it is almost time to decide who deserves a new contract and who does not deserve the drippings from my nose, well ours noses!

I was going to look at them all together, but I think I will do them one at a time... Simple question, and as the bearded one would say, 'deal or no deal?'

He has given his all for Pompey over the past few months, coming in from the cold to give it everything. He has become a 'golden boy', but I always get this feeling that he is one of those that is only being used while it benefits us and we are waiting for 'something better'.

A new deal is on the table, and he has 'apparently' managed to see more money offered as a result of our desperation to keep him amid an interest from Bolton in January. My thinking is with a contract on the table why is it not signed...

His worry is now, does he commit for another 3-years plus knowing that he might not be a regular 1st team player over this time? For me, he is not one of those that is happy to just 'pick up the money', he wants to play football as well.

Rumours that he was again offered as a 'makeweight' for a potential deal that might have brought Gary O'Neil back to Pompey from Boro could prove the last straw for him - and I hear that he has been offered to others as a makeweight several times over the years...

Deal or no deal? No deal.

I want to say deal, but feel it will be no deal if a new contract is not signed by the end of the season, as if not I do not think it will be.

As said the guy will want to play regular football and I suspect that we will be looking for options to replace him in the summer and he knows it - yet his loyalty has prevented him from jumping ship before he saw the job through. That said maybe he would have gone if we had accepted the offer?

These are my thoughts, what about yours? As always please share them below...

Deal for me too. He's a quality player and can still play in the Premiership. If we tie him down he'll be fantastic in the Championship and he won't leave, so he'll be a great asset. Whenever he's called upon he turns out a performance, and although I don't see him being a first team regular, he's essential if we are going to have strength in depth in the Prem.

I say deal, but it looks like it might well be up to Sean now. Maybe he is holding out just to see what happens in a couple of months.

Deal, and i think he will sign, but just waiting to see who is the next manager. I think he would have signed an extension last year without question, but after the way harry treated him at Wembley, after being one his "Blue eyed Boys" then snubbed at the last minute at Wembley, i think he is probably now looking after number 1 and you cant blame him for that. Harry has a lot more to answer for, than people realise i think.

Deal 100%. Storagematt ... the problem is we are back to the struggling team that was and we will continue battling with the fulhams and wigans of the prem. sean will be 1st team regular in our midfield, he is one of the best we have at the moment! he will sign provided we stay up i think!

Dependant on our vision for the future, and if we are guaranteed to replace with quality in the midfield, then no deal. But he has always been a constant performer, loyal and dedicated to whatever cause we have. So im saying deal.

it would be scandalous not to offer him a new contract. That said, i agree, that there are a lot of better midfielers we could get hold of. Unfortunatly, we don;t have any of them at the moment, and I doubt we would have vast amounts of money to spend in the summer. Letting a player like him go would be a real kick in the teeth.

Think you're wrong, PR. DEAL. A lot of people on this site still think we are Villa in disguise (ie challenging for Champ League spot) and will be in the future. Sorry to be pessimistic but we are, at best, a mid table team (we are never going to have the funds and backing to win the Premier league) and that means emulating the likes of (sorry this is so boring, yawn) Bolton, Fulham, West Ham etc, and putting faith, like them, in players like Sean. We had our brief moment in the sun, our '5 minutes in the limelight'. Better players may come along but they won't stay and we won't appreciate them as much as we do, Sean Davis. There are worse scenarios than having battling, dedicated, decent players in the team. So, DEAL DEAL DEAL, and thanks Sean, for helping to restore my faith in football and how it SHOULD be (bit philosophically Modernist, there, sorry)

I've said my piece on Davis already.. It's a tough call but I don't think he's anymore than an average squad player - I wish Owenspompey was here to back me up... Sorry fellas but as I see it he works hard and gives his all but is no better than average.. hang on.. having just reread what I typed I'm wavering .. nah no sentiment in football he had the chancce to sign and didn't NO DEAL [Edited by hickin]

Deal. Others have already explained why really, but in essence, I don't believe we're going to be bought out by Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum in the summer, so we need to keep the better players we have and stop dreaming that we're going to buy Gattuso in the summer.

Thank you for your vote of confidence lads it is nice to know that I am wanted. Truth is that the deal that I was offerred when Tony Adams was in charge has been withdrawn and nothing else has been offerred since. I would love to stay at Portsmouth but if they do not offer me a deal I have nothing to sign and so have no alternative but to look elsewhere in the summer. As I said on the Jimmy Traore article in the meantime I will continue to give my all and battle for every point so that we can stay in the premiership.

Carpet you offer five alternatives in your response all of whom are on longer contracts than Davis. I don't understand why in Decemebr everybody was saying we needed a right sided midfielder, a playmaker and a holding midfielder and we have didn't really fill any of those positions (Pennant loan maybe) but now everybody thinks Davis can do the job .. Why did you all think he could do it before January - What has changed? A few good performances and a rosier outlook than we had under Adams - Is that enough ?. He's average at best and if we settle for average (on high wages) we will struggle. The others mentioned maybe no better but they are hardly much worse and will cost the club a lot less - He has been a great servant but I still say NO DEAL .. I think he'll go anyway..

If we do lose our fight to stay up we have to consider who is the sort of player with the attitude and style to bring us back up again. Obviously, a willingness to stay and also salary wanted would be an issue but, is not battling Davis the sort that you would want come what may?
