Deal or no deal? Linvoy Primus...

So, we have some 15 players out of contract in the summer (or seeing their loans with Pompey end) it is almost time to decide who deserves a new contract and who does not deserve the drippings from my nose, well ours noses!

I was going to look at them all together, but I think I will do them one at a time... Simple question, and as the bearded one would say, 'deal or no deal?'

Linvoy Primus

An absolute legend, if you come across a Pompey fan that does not think as much and does not love the fella I would be amazed - a working class hero and a great ambassador to the club and to football.

Written off time and time again, but this time I think he really is done, and is hinting at as much in The News today - but he does want to stay with the club in some capacity, and would love a chance to pull on the blue shirt one last time well that is the thought given anyway...

Forget a testimonial, which without a shadow of a doubt the fella has earned and will get, I would hope that we can be in a position later in the season when we are safe enough for him to be able to be given a start, or at least appearances as a substitute. Ideally we can go into the last home game knowing we are safe and he can be handed the captains armband and say a fond farewell as a player to the Fratton faithful!

Deal or no deal? No deal - as a player...

As a player I suspect he is finished, well more than suspect, and not just here full stop.

So unfortunately this will be no deal, as a player anyway! But we must have some sort of coaching or ambassadorial role for him - he not only deserves it, he would be fantastic at it and inspirational to those around him.

We showed something that is lacking in football these days last summer with our loyalty, some might even say sentimentality, towards Linvoy. Some might argue that finding him a role with the club beyond this season is doing the same - if that is the case, so be it, I would not begrudge him anything, he might be a Londoner really, but cut him now and his blood runs as blue as any of ours!

These are my thoughts, what about yours? As always please share them below...

I like him, but like you said, he's been injured too many times, and is getting older. I would like to think he will be given some form of other job at the club. It would be nice to see him play a few more games before he does go.

Agree Rug - although it's a Deal for me. He is a great servant to Portsmouth FC and a really nice fella to boot. I don't think he should be offered a 100% 'playing' deal, but a coaching capacity deal at least. Like you say, he has blue blood, and if anyone out there represented the fans truly it would be him. Come on Sasha, make him a coach! I don't think I've ever met a Pompey fan who didn't like him.

Linvoy seems to be the first one to always welcome new players, he is Portsmouth through and through and should stay on as some coaching role

I was reading FourFourTwo magazine this month, and I read about a few instances where fans had a whip-round to help the club buy a player - Koln in Germany are doing it to buy Podolski, and Flamengo did it for Ronaldo. We should do it to raise funds to keep Linvoy at Pompey!

Deal, without a doubt, though I've given up all hope of seeing him in competitive action again

I think he is an important asset for the city as a whole and therefore we ought to find some compromise whereby he can use his talents as a communicator and motivator. There are a whole bunch of useful jobs that don't involve 90 mins on a matchday - the club is so much more than just the team. Possibly not being paid the same but being paid a lot more than most community work people, I'd guess.

will he feature for pompey again? I doubt it. I wanted to see him play in the community shield - which would have been a nice send off for him - sadley he didn;t get that chance. However, he can be a valuble asset in other functions. He has been great for portsmouth city football club, he is experianced, and seen it all. If he could help either bringing through youth players, or improving the image of the club (communication with the "locals"...etc.) - then I think we should try to keep him at the club. however as a member of the playing staff... no.

I'd love to say give him another contract, but sadly we all have to be realistic about that. How's this for an idea? If Paul Hart stays on as first team manager, Linvoy could take over his youth development role. With Hart still around as a mentor of course.

Sad but .. no deal .. no room (or money) for sentiment and as for offering him a coaching role.. only if he gets qualified - Love Linvoy to pieces but retaining people because they are liked is not the way to run a business .. whoops meant to say Football Club.. BUT definately give him a testamonial.. even if he donates the proceeds to the church

all, well maybe not all, but most - when you do say deal you do not mean deal as a player do you?

Chix, you are a tough man - i will be amazed if linvoy does not get some sort of role with the club...

Testimonial, then I reckon he will get some sort of club ambassador role, if anyone can paint Pompey in a brighter picture surely that man is Linvoy

so then, on the whole we are agreed that it is a deal... but 'only' in a coaching or some other sort of club role capacity right?

DEAL: A years deal will be like a 'loyalty bonus' and 'testimonial' for him with the benefits of his aura for the team and in the meantime, the club can think of how to use him.

Linvoy's a big name in my book and will continue to. Sadly i've got to go along with the line that his playing days are probably behind him, but there can be a role for him. We need players with the stature of Linvoy to bring his passion for the club into the off pitch arena. As hammersmith blue said, the club is so much more than just the team and you don't get ambassadors such as Linvoy popping up every day...
