He has been quiet for too long, of course there must have been a 'Sol Campbell rant' brewing, and this is the case today, with the Pompey captain sharing his views on a couple of areas today...
Campbell - we should have built on last season...
Talking in The Guardian today he has said that we missed the chance to be in Villa's position by allowing top players to leave when bringing in another couple of players - as well as keeping them - would not have seen this chance missed...
Of course I share Sol's disappointment and to a degree frustration, and do think about what 'could have been' but what purpose is this sort of talk and thinking going to serve? We have something bigger to worry about - the genuine reality that we 'might go down', not that we will!
We spent heavily, if not so much in terms of transfer fees - which were high - then on wages, which are now the curse of us with far too many picking up top, top money but not doing much, if anything, to justify them! In simple terms 'we spent well beyond our means', this brought us success, but in many ways this followed Jamie's Dad's philosophy of 'short-term' and not 'long-term' planning...
'If' we had the money of course we would have built on the squad, and we 'might' have been in Villa's position, but simple truth is we could not, and do not have the money to have built on this - we might have been able to carry on lending and spending this money but that would have left us very, very much up a certain creek.
Had we done this maybe this would not have been a problem as far as the ramifications of this went for the likes of Sandra's wife and Sol in the future, as they would not be here, but 'when', and not 'if', this came crashing down the fans would be left heartbroken at the dire straits we were left in! There is no reason why we cannot remain 'semi successful', but I for one am glad that we did rein things in before they became so out of control we were doomed!
All that said, in all honesty we still have a decent squad, granted a squad lacking some quality from last season and earlier this, but a squad nevertheless that 'should' be higher than it is, so as said several times over the months it is the players that might want to also look closer to home before blame is shifted here, there and everywhere - and he has done this again by being the latest to take a swipe at Tony Adams - apart from at their own doorstep...
==========
Dock points for racists chanting!
The second point of the day for Sol were his points of racist chanting, and how this should be dealt with...
As we all know several Spurs fans were charged with racists chanting aimed at him during the win against them at Fratton earlier in the season, but he wants stronger actions taken against clubs that have fans charged with such crimes - he wants clubs docked points!
Whilst I completely agree that what is not acceptable in the everyday world should of course not be acceptable in football, take the Ben Thatcher's attack on Pedro Mendes back along for example - in everyday life he would have been in major trouble for that, he got a long suspension and a fine but it was not enough! So with racists and homophobic actions not acceptable in everyday life, this should not be acceptable within football or any other sport.
With so many television cameras and CCTV camera present at games these days, offenders can be sounded out, and by all means make examples of them, fine, sentence and ban them from sporting events and so on but can you really punish clubs by docking them points?
To an extend it is the clubs prerogative to control fans, but how can you control the spoken or physical actions of individuals? You do not know who is going to say and do what - for me as much as these kinds of actions are wrong I just do not see how it can be just to hold clubs accountable for their fans actions. Fans are accountable for their actions, and they are the ones that should be held accountable for these...

as for the racisist thoughts, totally agree there is no place for it in the world, let alone sport, but punishing the clubs and no individuals isnt the way to go - thats a ridiculous idea...
