James to become a record breaker

James to become a record breaker

With all the thought, or at least plenty of them, turned to 'who will become Pompey's new manager' the fact that David James equalled the premier league appearance record last weekend was probably missed - the fact that he will break this when we play Citeh tomorrow probably equally so...

But the England no.1 will make premier league appearance number 536 at the weekend, therefore surpassing Gary Speed's record, which of course he currently shares.

James has told The Sun what it will mean to him to set this record, and it is something that he is proud of: 'the record means a hell of a lot to me. Every time Gary Speed has pulled on a shirt in recent seasons the lads have given me a bit of stick, saying: 'You'll have to go for another game... and another one'. It's the same when Ryan Giggs plays.

'I have been there from the first Premiership game and the first live Sky game, which I think was Liverpool against Forest in 1992.

'I am playing in the best domestic league in the world, so if you can play in it for 15 or 16 years, that must say something.'

He also spoke about his future with Pompey, and despite reports to the contrary he is not planning on making a swift exit from the South Coast, as he still believes that he owes the club a lot: 'as things stand, I have another couple of years with Portsmouth and I hope to go on as long as I can.

'When I signed for Pompey, I was looking at Championship options as well.

'Portsmouth gave me the opportunity to be in the Premier League and that's why I'm still playing for England, too.'

To be honest his form has been up and down this season, but I still maintain my thoughts that a lot of this is due to the fact that he has little, or no, confidence in the defenders in front of him so he is trying to do too much to compensate for this and at times this costs him and us.

All being well we will still have a couple more years service from him and the record can be extended yet further, but starting tomorrow with a win would be a fantastic start, and a start we need.

Remember the last time we faced Citeh and were looking squarely down the barrel - can history repeat itself, but with him on our side this time...

Despite not being in his best form lately he is a top top asset to us. The man's a machine and will probably be playing well into his forties! England's number 1 for a reason!

He's a real superstar, glad he's on our side, and may he be for a long time to come. Must admit his recent form has worried me a bit, and he had a couple of dodgy moments for England, but I think Rug's right, the defence in front of him has been poor lately, and that's why. Lets hope he celebrates the record with a clean sheet!

Well let's hope there's a clean sheet in the offing for us this weekend and a couple of goals in the City net. I've still got the utmost faith in James but he does need to be backed up by the guy's protecting him. Hopefully everybody in the back line will pull there socks up and start performing in the way they did last season. It's good to know that Jamoe's still up for the team and going to be around for a while longer yet. I for one congratulate him on his prem record, it's quite something when you think about it.
13/02/2009 11:41:00
Congrats, Jamo. Another milestone in an outstanding career.
13/02/2009 12:19:00
Let's hope there are no last minute goals against you, a la great escape
13/02/2009 12:19:00
Well done Jamo, try and keep a clean sheet whilst the rest of us **** ourselves.
13/02/2009 12:28:00
Thanks Rug, I was thinking of writing this one myself but you have saved me the effort. A lot of publicity around Giggs scoring in every Premier League season but is Jamo the only other player to play in them all?

Well played David and celebrate with 3 points tomorrow!!
13/02/2009 12:31:00
Sol Campbell has also played in every Premier League season since it's conception. As has Nicky Butt.
13/02/2009 12:48:00
Come on David, back to your best for us now please, Celebrate with a clean sheet.
13/02/2009 12:48:00
Wow that is amazing. When Jamo first started in goal in the Premiership I was 13! I guess Chix it must be great for you to look back as well, as you must have just been reaching 50! lol (just kidding)
Fingers are crossed but I still don't see a clean sheet coming for a while.
