Basinas signs for Pompey

It has been confirmed on the Pompey Site that Angelos Basinas has joined Pompey.

The fee has not been disclosed, but an 18-month contract has been signed by the 33-year-old Greek international - who was part of the 2004 European championship winning side - who joins from AEK Athens, with Peter Storrie saying: 'we've brought in someone of immense experience, the current captain of Greece who is just three games away from winning his 100th cap for his country.

'He's exactly what we need in the situation that we're in. He's a player that Tony was eager to bring to Pompey.

'He desperately wanted to come here and we have an option to sign him for a further year on top of the 18 months.'

Time will tell if we have got the right player, or if he has come in a few years too late - either way lets give the fella a chance before he is written off, or for that matter raved about I guess...

What does he do? I know he plays football. Is he a striker or midfield?
Gandor, he is a central defensive midfield player, maybe getting on a bit, but he has a long pedigree, just hope he turns out to be another Pedro Mendes.
Setanta report that he hs ben brought in to replace Davis. Please no!
He's a quality player and if people moan about his age I point them towards one D. Beckham currently plying his trade at a small club in Milan. I hope that people give him a chance to prove himself over a few games before deciding to write him off as 'another one of those greek players' (who happens to have set up the winning goal in the euro 2004 final).
I read in the Daily Mail that we have turned down Bolton's offer for Davis.
Sky are saying that dos santos is at fp having a medical
Bloody long medical, they said he was there yesterday!!Must be the NHS waiting time, we must be hard up if he can't go private!!
I think this cold be a good signing, he sits in front of the defense and provides cover in that MakÚlÚlÚ role. I know he's old but I don't think that matters if he is sit in front of the defense and give them that cover that they need at the moment.
Another Greek, they keep each other company whilst they settle in. Let's hope they hit the deck running & we have no plate throwing tantrums!!!
Sky are now saying fee agreed for Dos Santos
Let's hope this one speaks English

You can never have enough quality, Hughes and Diop need competition and Sean and Mullins need help, dont knock it bring them in.
The dominoes are beginning to fall. One deal leads to another, players having medicals even before fees are agreed. With Spurs offering cash for Robbie Keane they need to sell Dos Santos and now TWO clubs are believed to have agreed a fee!!
owens - storries has confirmed it has been one f...err...lipping long medical! as for basinas... I have no idea. however - how many defencive midfielders do we have now?!?!?
strength in depth as my old dad is always saying.
i hope we get dos santos!
Official club website says how Basinas played a key role in helping Mallorca escape relegation. That's the sort of experience that we want!
Well I am trying very hard to be positive...but lets be honest, it sounds like a joke doesn't it? a 33 year old greek midfielder...My only solace is HR tried to sign him previously when we were not in the SHoneT, and I do think/hope TA knows what he is doing...As for the forward it is my opinion a natural goal-scorer will score in whatever division he plays, but the higher the division the better the backs and goalies are, so the quantity shrinks, time will tell with Theo Gekas. Im glad that i supose it means Nuge will be part of the forwards involved and we have some width on the right with JP and and a steady eddy in the middle with HM. on the whole i am hoping this transfer window proves to be good, but negatively, my worry is that only Pennant is an improvement on what we already had Im disappointed with dos Santos not being a goer and agree players must be fully fit
plymouth graham
Don't know much about the guy but have seen him play... I saw two of Greece group games in Euro 2004 (Spain and Russia) .. I made the comment 'Greece they are awful,,, Never get out of the group" .. shows what little i know .. He's a blue now so lets get behind the fella when he pulls on the shirt..
