The name may not be familar, but the Greek was top scorer in the Bundesliga a couple of seasons back, and he arrives with quite a record, he has the topped the Greek scoring charts with Panathinaikos, and is current second top score in the Bundesliga.
Coach Skibbe obviously doesn't get on with him though, as although he is Laverkusen's top scorer he has been on the bench in recent weeks, and now of course he has been given the job to fire Pompey to safety.
Gekas will wear number 29 for Pompey, and stands at 5'10 and a half inches, he is aged 28 and has scored 12 goals in 35 matches for his country.
Gekas may not have a name such as Saviola, but I reckon he will have a hunger to succeed, and with a goal every other game record may just be what Tony Adams has been searching for since Defoe quit on him.
Adams told Pompeys official site Tony Adams believes that Gekas can adapt to life in the Premier League straight away.
He said: "His goalscoring record is fantastic and he's always looking to score goals.
"He's always on the shoulder of the last defender, he looks to get in behind the defence and he's got a great eye for goal. Hopefully that will continue with Pompey.
"He plays for the Greek national team and recently came on against Italy and scored.
"A couple of years ago he was the highest scorer in the Bundesliga. The Bundelsiga is a fantastic league, so that's not an easy feat.
"I think that he's really keen to come to the Premier League and get some goals for us.
"He's a player that I think can come in and do well straight away. He's certainly hungry to do well and hopefully he can hit the ground running.
"I think he's got the right attitude and mentality to come in and do well right from the start.
"I'm surprised that he hasn't played as much for Leverkusen this season but he's still been useful for them. He's only played 108 minutes for them in the league and he's scored two goals."

Bayer to sell Gekas
Sky Sports
Theofanis Gekas looks set to leave Bayer Leverkusen, and a host of Premier League clubs are said to be interested. Spanish side Espanyol are leading the chase for the Greek international but there is also interest from England. Stoke, Portsmouth and Sunderland are all believed to be keeping tabs on the 28-year-old, who is set to leave Bayer before Monday's window closes. Gekas joined Leverkusen in 2007, but he is now set to be sold in order to make room for Eren Dergiyok - who is to join from FC Basel. "We have received an offer from Espanyol. Yet we have no agreement over the transfer fee, but this might still happen. I am not discussing figures publicly," said Bayer director Wolfgang Holzhauser.
As for Nugent ..yeah he must be low but he has known since before Xmas that we were in the market for a new striker.. I still think Nuge has a big part to play though..
'star names' are not always the answer are they, it is because of alot of these star names - signed when we could not afford them on inflated wages - that we are in the position we are!
in all honesty not the name i was hoping for, but he cannot be written off until he has been given a chance, 'if' he does the business to save us who is going to care that no one knows who he is...
