Hughes - who the f**k are you Merse!

Richard Hughes has understandably, and rightly, hit out at Paul Merson following the criticism levelled at him both in a written column and during his punditry ahead of the meeting with Villa on Tuesday.

Merson singled Hughes out as a player that should not have been given a new contract as 'he was not good enough to get in the side when he was there, so his signing of a new deal is a sign of the problems we are having now'...

Staying here for some 6-years or so is evidence enough that he belongs here for a reason! Also, it might be a crazy thought, but maybe, just maybe Hughesie has improved as a player over the years? A crazy thought I know, but maybe, just maybe something that might actually be the case!

This is how he responded to what was levelled at him, with him quoted on sky sports: 'I have heard the comments from Merse and he has had plenty of time to come out and explain himself but I find it strange that he brought me into an article that wasn't about Richard Hughes but was about Portsmouth.

'If it wasn't personal then I would have expected him to contact me but he hasn't. Merse is working for the media. It is a game of opinion, I know, and he is paid to give his.

'In this case no-one asked what I was like as a player, he just brought me in to it. He is wrong to do that but it does not surprise me that he has not shown a bit of class because it is something I don't associate with him. What he has apparently said is not only wrong but inaccurate.

'He said I couldn't get in the team but in fact I played the first seven or eight games the year we won the Championship but then got injured and it was difficult to get back in with a torn hamstring.

'When I did come back I chopped the top of my finger off and it was also difficult to play when I was in hospital.

'I hope Paul does have something to say to me because I've tried to ring him and he seems to have changed his number. However he should know mine because it's always been the same and I would like the chance to talk to him.'

Well said, I think that the former Pompey captain needs to take his head out of his arse and wind his neck in!

I know that Hughes is not the greatest footballer in the world, hell I am sure that the player himself knows that - he, and we, know he is limited in what he can do, but he does not try to do anymore than he can. He will always gives 110%, never shirks his responsibilities and you can rest assured that he will always do a job when called upon, even if he goes weeks or month between games. For me he is a fantastic squad player to have around and I am happy to have him here, and I fully back him in what he has said.

Saviola a no go
Also, Tony Adams has confirmed that a possible deal to bring Javier Saviola to Pompey on loan from Madrid is off, as he wants players that are ready to get straight into action and not take time to get their fitness levels right or acclimatise to the premier league.

Fair play to him, I have to admit that I did not like the thought of not signing him just because he might not be quite 100% match fit - for me this would not have taken long, but Adams is the manager and I back his decision. To be fair the Argentinean might have taken a long time to adapt to life in England, something we do not have time for.

If Adams only wants players with premier league experience/ability to go straight into the side, and only if they are better than what we have, so be it - I like the way he is thinking out his moves, not just jumping into them as a man who sat in his seat prior to him would have done, it is always shoot first ask questions later with Jamie's Dad...

It is now said that full attention will now be turned towards Benjani, with a £3m approach set to be put forward to Citeh in an attempt to re-sign him?

Nice one Hughesy good to see you stick up for yourself and the team... As for Saviola a very brave decision by Big Tone - Nobody can say he doesn't know what he wants now. Saviola not good (well fit) enough for Pompey .. now that is something. Keep working away Tone, you'll get ya man.. whoever he is !
Chix
I'd say Merse is back on the booze.. Hopefully, he's not on Tonys list of 150!!! ahhh
nodster
With the Saviola thing, ive seen another article printed this morning/evening for you guys saying how he is still coming to Fratton..? Id say Sky is the more reputable source though
nodster
I am bloody furious! Adams knew damn well that Saviola could not have been match fit and he also knew that as he lived and played in Spain, he could not fit into the prem straight away. So why, why, why was he targeted in the first place? What the hell is going on?
Gandor1
Further more, we cannot afford that attitude. If we are going to acquire players to play in the prem straight away, then we have to look to England, if we look to England we have to buy, not loan, and we haven't got any money. We have been wasting valuable time. Why?
Gandor1
nice one hughesy glad to see a reasoned responce and as for saviola i've decided if that if i have nothing positive to say well i will just try not to say it.
pompeym@
Well said Richard Hughes, and yes Benji!!!!!!
jbaker
But Glen Little has his number! He would have to go to 29!
jbaker
Gandor - I've just checked back through my Saviola file (yes sad I know) and Tony has NEVER said he has wanted Saviola - There have been many reporting stating that he wants him but not one quote from Tony until this week when Uncle Peter said he was 'interested' in 'looking at him' - I'm not so sure he was actually targetted for as long as we think... BUT your second point about players with premiership experience does really hold water .. We should really be looking in our own back yard... but then again where are Mullins and Pennant from..ummm interesting!
Chix
Good on yer Hughsie, why is it that everybody outside of Pompey in the press want to have a dig at us, what have we done so wrong?? As I have said in other articles, no one really knows whats going on regarding the transfers and the club only go public once they have signed someone, and that is normally on a Friday so lets wait and see who is unveiled on Meridien News tonight. A big surprise was that Tony had been looking at Mullins for some period of time which indicates that he has seen something in the lad. A lot of rumours start with the agents of course, and also I'm sure we fling in a few smoke screens, Wouldn't mind betting we get Djibrel Cisse off Sunderland, he has Premiership experience, he is fit and he used to play along side Crouchie at Liverpool, you never know???

One of the reasons why Merse is so entertaining is that most of what he says is ridiculous. Takes all sorts. But nice to see such a proud yet reasoned attitude from Hughesie. If only attitude won titles...

Richard Hughes couldn't get into the Pompy team because he chopped the top of his finger off??? lol... Now if he'd have said toe, i might have a bit of sympathy. All Merse said was Hughes wasn't good enough and i think he's right. Merse is a crap pundit but as a footballer he was another level. He obviously wants Pompy to do well and doesn't see players of Hughes's ability the way forward. Mullins and Pennant were very good against Villa but Pompy have seriously missed Diarra&Muntari
Hitman
Not sure what all the fuss is about, I like RH for his attitude & there when needed. The point being when needed we are in trouble. We don't have too much quality at the moment so he plays. When we had real quality he didn't. I'd prefer the later & have RH struggling to get on the bench & then we would have a great team again. It's not about nice guys, I want a winning team & agree with Merse, though I might have worded what he said differntly.

trouble is Harry always told MErse it was down to hio we won the league.... Maybe it was, we cant deny his presence inspired the team, but it took a team to win promotion, not 1 man. And 1 of those team members was Hughes, a man even Harry stood by for 5 years, so shut up Merse dont tarnish our memeories of you.

Well said back Hughsie, it is damn right out of order what Merson has been saying over the last few weeks about Pompey and Tony Adams, not just that one article. Saying we should not have sold Defoe or Diarra, like we had a choice in either of them.
Tony needs to think about what he is saying, before rejecting players. He cannot loan any more players from England so must buy, and players that you generally loan anyway, are done so because they are not in the team and therefore will not be match fit. Who loans out players from their first team? I think we have missed a real chance with Javier, and will not be impressed if we end up with someone like Lita or Harewood instead.
sneakay
well done hughes although chopping your finger off, so you can't play football? anyways... saviola would have been brilliant for us,he just would have needed a bit of time, but we should still try and get him!
MFFP
Hughsie is a great squad player, although I would have thought he would have practiced using his right foot as he always turns to make sure he can pass with is left, but hey ho, he is a good bloke to have in to break up play. Think Saviola would be good, he is not injured so must be fit, perhaps not match fit, but then nor is Utaka and Tony has admitted that. It wouldn't take long to get him up to match fitness and if he is quick and dangerous then he would succeed in any league. If it came down to a choice of Lita or Harewood though I think I would rather see Lita, as he could be a sound asset if moulded correctly by Whittingham and co.

Go Hughesy! I know that Merson did very well for Pompey but the poor fella is clearly a bit of a dimwit. I know it's a bit naughty but I don;t half giggle when Jeff Stelling asks him a 'difficult' question on Soccer Saturday.
Squee
Paul Merson has made a very good career from talking out of his back passage, and I feel must be commended for managing to find someone stupid enough to pay him for the privelege.
