Still no luck!

Still no luck!

Tony Adams, and we, were left cursing our luck once again with the luck - or lack of - that we had against Villa last night, as we slumped to another defeat.

Adams on no luck
'I've changed ties, I've changed suits - I just want some luck from somewhere.'

Tactical novice or not, think of him what you will but no one can say that he has had any luck since taking over as Pompey manager. He has had a phenomenal amount of luck against him, an amount that I have never known. We are talking hitting the post/bar up to 5 times in one game, having shot after shot cleared of the line and so on.

Luck is not shining on Adams or us - they say these things 'even themselves out', well if we are going to get our share back then good god we are in for something special!

Adams on signs of encouragement
'There are certainly signs of encouragement I thought they were organised and resilient a very good Aston Villa team, but I thought we deserved something out of the game.'

Lets not underestimate just what a good side Villa are, I think it was their 6th successive away win - a new club record? Make no bones about it, they are challenging for the league - and we made them look decidedly average for most of the game.

The worry for me was, as much possession as we had, and the threat some players clearly had I never really felt we were going to score - but we should take encouragement from this, showings like this more often than not will result in wins against other sides or other nights.

Adams on Belhadj sending off
'No complaints whatsoever, he was a silly boy and he reacted.

'Whatever people do - if you thought it was handball or not - you don't react like that so no complaints.'

Stupid, absolutely stupid, but not a surprise to me at all to be honest. This has been building up for the past 3 or 4 home games, all of which I think he has been luck to escape not being sent off. His temperament needs looking at, and he needs to be told in no uncertain terms that he cannot be behaving on the pitch the way he does - it is disgraceful, and not only hurts him, more importantly it hurts us!

He should have got a straight red in the 1st half, the wild swing - which is not uncommon for him, but will be something referees are going to note and target him for now - deserved a red.

Sod the fighters, we need some quality now!
'We need fighters to get us out of this position' is something that we keep hearing - yep players that want to fight for the shirt, the club and the fans is what we need and want, but I say we now have enough of these, and I fear these alone are not going to be enough to do the job!

We desperately need some creative spark from the middle of the park, we need to be able to unlock a defence from this area - either threading a ball through to get someone away, or spreading it wide for the wide men to take advantage of, and at the moment we have willing workers but not enough quality to do this.

Niko Kranjcar was showing signs of this before his latest injury, but I fear playing him as part of a midfield pairing, as he will go missing and leave his partner totally isolated. And a midfield pair is something I feel we will see more of again now, 4-4-2 is going to be used again more.

Somehow, anyhow, we need to bring someone creative in - there must be a loan deal to be done, failing that midfield spark we either need to give Dave Nugent a go alongside Peter Crouch to decide once and for all or bring in a pacy forward - fingers crossed this will be Javier Saviola, although I do not remain hopeful.

Come on Peter Storrie, you have a few days to really dig deep and maybe just save our premier league existence - I know money is tight, but speculating a few quid to bring in that quality will be worth much more if it secures our top-flight survival...

Got to agree it is luck we are lacking. 71% possession in the second half tells the story and Villa only one shot on target in the whole match.
Trouble is where do you find luck? You can't but with the effort most of the team showed last night they do deserve some.
As for Nadir's short fuse that has got to be sorted NOW!

Luck is a bugger isn't it. We certainly have not had any recently but then they say you create your own luck. If we create as many chances against Fulham on Saturday we will surely see the tide turn and the ball in the back of the net at least once.

Quite seriously wish you guys and Tony Adams all the best for the rest of the season. You deserve better than how that 'wide-boy' Redknapp and his little dwarf Defoe treated you. You do need an injection of pace in the side, but I thought Pennant had a fine game and will give you good options. We are not playing anywhere near as good football as we were earlier in the season, but we are superbly organised and strong at the back, and you don't win six away games on the trot on luck alone! I think Tony Adams would appreciate our defence (like the famous Arsenal back four!). BEST OF LUCK, No way should you go down.

I thought this was our best home performance in the league for sometime. Luck isn't something we have been blessed with since TA took over. 442 looked balanced so no doubt TA will tinker & mess it up. I have no faith in him. Pennent was great, Mullins did well as did Herman. Crouch needs a goal or three. Belhadj needs flogging & we need a creativity in midfield, easier said than done. we have some hope if we build on that performance & must now get a minimum of a draw at Fulham.

Hope pompey stay up,Your a good english club,If you can get saviola in i think you will be fine,Pennant was really good last night aswell.Belhadj is a tosser though, you would be better off with traore in there.

As well as luck you need ability and at the moment Pompey are struggling in both areas.
28/01/2009 10:39:00
Yeah good luck with the rest of the season pompey, genuinely wish you success and I hope Tony gets a chance.

Agree - LUCK ! Unfortunately some managers are unlucky. Don't get me wrong I am not calling for Tony's head, although on the way out of the Park last night - plenty were! I thought we played better without Campbell in the second half and the commitment was obvious even when we went down to 10 men we still won the battles with Villa. Tony said it all pre-match. He hasn't got the £40M each season that HE had access to! OUT IN Sulley £14M Belhadj £4.5M Pedro £3.5M Mullens £1.0M HIM £5.0M Diarra £20.0M De-Foe £15.0M TOTAL RECOUPED 57.5M TOTAL SPENT 5.5M Even allowing 7.5M Sell on fees, 25M to clear some debt and allow Sacha to get some money back, 5M to spend on training ground....that still leaves a tidy war chest to try and guarantee SURVIVAL. This maybe a simplistic view of the money spent and recouped but that is what the fans see. Yes, it is a business owned and run by Sacha and Peter Storrie, and if they have over spent and bulked out the credit cards because of HIS spending requirements then they are responsible for that as the Business men in charge of OUR club. The figures speak for themselves. Prem Survival is worth so much more than the £35M we will miss from TV money alone. The Board need to realise this in the next 4 days or they will be culpable! You either support Tony properly or you get a more seasoned premiership manager in that can do the job with what we've been left with after ripping the heart out of a top ten, FA Cup winning side. WELL PLAYED POMPEY LAST NIGHT, Come on supporters lets get behind the team...we must play our part! I'm off to kiss the Blarney stone, with pockets of rabbits feet and then off to John Lewis to get Tony another Tie !!!
28/01/2009 10:59:00
After being at the game last night I had to come on here and wish you all the best for the rest of the season. Tony Adams deserves to lead you into next season as a Premiership outfit but you need to sort out that Belhadj - he looks a talented enough player but luck was there for both teams as he didn't get a straight red and Gardner escaped a serious injury. That said, I reckon one good win will lead to a good run and you'll be okay. See y'all next season!!

Devil's advocate

Having heard the views of chris1954 and Pompeysurrey that of Ronald Wilson encompasses both, reacting to them, but also offers an opinion of their own.

What a mess

Ouch, 'what a mess' is the assessment of Pompeysurrey when commenting on the current situation at Fratton Park.
