Storrie - Pennant deal close, as are two others

Peter Storrie has told The News that the move to bring Jermaine Pennant to Pompey is 'very, very close' to being completed, as are moves for a couple of other players: 'we are trying our very best to bring players in.

'As far as Jermaine is concerned, it's very, very close - as we are with one or two others.

'It was only ever going to be a loan or short-term permanent deal. He is a free agent at the end of the season and he doesn't want to give up those rights.

'Whether it is a contract until the end of June or a loan, it's a bit irrelevant.'

I think the fella clearly has talent - you do not play for Arsenal and Liverpool otherwise, but he seems to be wasting that talent, and question marks have to be over his attitude and his actual outlook on what the game brings him, besides money! Given a run of games I feel we could see this talent, but at the same time if he really wanted to come to us would he not commit for longer than 'just the end of the season?' Then again, does this suit us...

I think it would be crazy paying a £2m fee just until the summer, so surely a loan - which would involve some loan fee - would be the way to go, with potentially first option on his free signing?

To be honest I am easy on this one - if it happens and he wants to play for Pompey then great, if not, so be it and we move on!

He also spoke about Patrick Vieira - who we would have liked had he not been injured, as well as saying that deals to bring in Gary O'Neil and Edu had been close to being completed, only for their clubs to pull out of the deals at the last...

'Reports' are also circulating today that a move to bring in Christian Poulsen on loan from Juventus is also close. Although the midfielder, who is not long back from injury, is said to have voiced his desire to fight his way back into the side Juve despite a deal having been struck with them?

Less talk, more actions - announce them when they have signed, do not say 'they are close' until they are done. It seems to be giving that 'easy out' by saying deals are close only for them to 'fall through' as clubs pull out or players do not want the moves...

Christian Poulsen is a new name to the list. Tall Danish central midfield player who is combative but scores only a few goals. Has played in Germany and Spain but not been at Juve that long before his injury. Career has been littered with disciplinary problems too.

I am hearing from a friend in London (she work for the internet side of BBC News 24.) That Harry and Spurs have tapped up most players wanted by Us, Bolton, Boro, Newcastle and Blackburn, and told the owning clubs of various players, that they are CLEARLY on Harry's radar as 2nd and 3rd choices. In turn, these clubs have Blocked any moves/bids from Us, Bolton, Boro, Newcastle and Blackburn, in a hope they will get more money from their players IF and when Harry needs to go for option 2 or 3???? Now correct me if i'm wrong, but not only does this stink, as it means the other clubs around Spurs (possition in loeague i mean), are now having their hands tied reference transfers, but this must be a form of tapping up? You cant blame the selling club, but this is very underhand surely.

I rate Poulsen, he'd do a good job for Pompey.

I should be more worried about paying my tax liability by 31st January so this has proved a great diversion even though I daresay I've got my priorities wrong! Agree with you Rug, the deal ain't done until it's done - I think we get tired of the club "mouthing off" to the media but then don't we also moan that Peter Storrie doesn't keep us informed if we don't hear anything for half an hour? Midge, if that's true - which I doubt - then Jamie's dad has got too much time on his hands! What happens, like it or not, is the players' agents tout their clients around potentially interested parties and, someone like Jamie's dad, will always keep his options open I guess. SO much about football and the transfer market stinks and, in another business environment, would be considered corrupt. That said, aren't all coveted employees in business subject to the call from a headhunter - "tapping up" in other words? In many respects football in a law unto itself.

newsnow..its an addiction. feel the press are putting every player off coming to Pompey, portraying them as a small club with no ground no money and a crap,or whacky manager. this is directly opposed to our previous image as a a atmospheric stadium with a rich owner ambitious owner and a great traditional english manager...

Well said, Tony. Personally, I'd rather we didn't hear a word until the deals were done - not through the media or the club. Also, as an aside, aren't we getting a bit too paranoid with the "no-one likes us" routine?

Possibly Owens the thought that if he was seen to do something rather than bench warm, he can line his pockets in the summer

Hooray! I'll try leaving work in a huff tomo too, maybe I'm a lucky charm? I read somewhere (probably here) that he has the best successful cross rate in the premiership. It could be a load of tripe, but fingers crossed eh.

Pennant to debut against Swansea on Saturday then fellas - I hope he can find Crouchys head like we all expect him to be able to do.. I hope he can take a mean corner too.. seven inches off the ground would be an improvement !

I think your being a little harsh on kranjcar there. he can mostly get it at least 10inches off the ground. I'm looking forward to seeing a good delivery from a set peice (I hope!), some support for johnosn down the right - last season and most of this season, he was playing for two players! - and hopefully a good FA cup win too.

at the end of the day he is here, that is all that matters now, he might want to line his pockets in the summer, but to do that he will need to impress - if he does it will help us and he can get whatever move he wants, who knows believe it or not he might actually like it here and want to stay!
