Nugent - that showed you!

Nugent - that showed you!

I think that one fella had more to prove to 'the man that signed him' than most yesterday, and Dave Nugent, when it looked like he might not have following his 1st half miss when one on one, did just that. And as he told The News he certainly enjoyed it: 'I'm delighted. It's my first Premier League goal. Hopefully there will be more to come now.

'I've picked the right match to do it, with it being in front of my ex-boss as well.

'I never played much under Harry so I'm happy to have done it now. I had a point to prove. It was in the back of mind to show him what I can do.

'Under Harry my confidence was a bit low, but Tony is giving me my chance now.

'Since Tony has come in he has played me and my confidence is back up there.'

You could see in his face, and by his celebrations that he was saying 'up yours' as he revelled in the goal.

Ok, it took a slight deflection but the technique was fantastic and shows what he can do - with more confidence and belief in his ability, and to be fair he has been improving with games and not just because of his work rate, commitment and determination that is making his a 'fans favourite', we are seeing a better player.

He needed this first league goal, in off his arse, back or whatever would have done me but such a fine strike and against Spurs made it even sweeter for all concerned! Now he has this I am hopeful we will see more to follow...

Yet again though, in the face of fresh 'speculation' of a move to Sheffield United, Nugent has once again reiterated his desire to stay with Pompey and prove Tony Adams' confidence in him is well placed: 'Tony has changed things and wants to do things his way now the job is his.

'I've been put out on the wing to do a job and I'm doing it. I'm just happy to be playing. I may not be in my best position but I've scored and I want to score a few more.

'Because I haven't been playing there are a few clubs I've been linked with. They are in the Championship, though, and I don't want to drop down.

'I want to prove I can do it at this level. Hopefully people will see what I can do.'

Tony Adams keeps saying 'he wants players that want to play for Portsmouth', this is what we all want - and this is something that Nugent has said over, and over, and over again since he joined us.

He was not one of the 'golden boys' in the past, so rarely got that chance - and injuries did not help - but he clearly wants to play for us and will give us his all. I can overlook a slight lack in quality for this and his contribution to the team can be worth as much as goals can, but with this first out of the way I feel that we can, and will, see more come along in the months ahead, so long as he continues to be given the chance...

Super David Nugent, the pompey Dirk Kuyt. I'd put the pennant deal to bed and him on the right. I think strengthening the middle is more important.

Great return on investment!

one goal doesnt make up for what has gone before tho i agree WalshWasGod, as i know you do not rate him at all, but as good as 'he' - you know who - was at convincing players to sign and getting the best out of them, if he did not fancy you who could do exactly the same job in reverse, he crushed nugent's confidence. he is not the greatest player around, but is showing improved quality the more he plays and his effort and commitment cannot ever be doubted - do we suddenly think we are 'so mighty' that these traits are no longer any good for pompey...

Could I ask a question please? I thought Nuge did very well, but when I looked through the match live at Spurs several of them were saying he plays awful (well, until he scored, that is). Could someone tell me what they think Spurs were referring to?
19/01/2009 12:36:00
Would have been better if he had got another one from the numerous chances but at least it's a start. Just as well as I think he's in for a long run in the team given that I doubt we will sign anyone in the next two weeks.
19/01/2009 12:37:00
ive been unconvinced by his ability to play on the right, but i think nugent is growing into the roll and offers us much more than anyone else that we have at the club in that roll. we are not flush with cash, you use what you have and play to your stengths, so as you say SUAC51 if pennant doesnt want to play for pompey, sod him, forget about him and put what money we would pay for him towards getting what we desperately need more than anything else, more central midfielders!
19/01/2009 12:39:00
he needed that goal, had the one on one came after the goal he would have scored - one on one with so much time to think about what you are going to do for your first league goal saw him blow it, less time, like his goal, and he would have scored. if only we could have reversed the 2 chances and he would have scored a couple at least, but it is a start...

May it be the first of many for the lad!

He took his goal absolutely brilliantly - I was loving sitting in the Spurs end, almost bursting, my face getting redder and redder as I wanted to cheer as loud as possible! At first I really didn't like him out on the right but he was excellent against Spurs and I think for the first time I actually didn't want Nugent to be subbed.

Time will tell...but it's always nice when someone is able to say "up yours" to their old boss.
