'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Nugent - that showed you!

I think that one fella had more to prove to 'the man that signed him' than most yesterday, and Dave Nugent, when it looked like he might not have following his 1st half miss when one on one, did just that. And as he told The News he certainly enjoyed it: 'I'm delighted. It's my first Premier League goal. Hopefully there will be more to come now.

'I've picked the right match to do it, with it being in front of my ex-boss as well.

'I never played much under Harry so I'm happy to have done it now. I had a point to prove. It was in the back of mind to show him what I can do.

'Under Harry my confidence was a bit low, but Tony is giving me my chance now.

'Since Tony has come in he has played me and my confidence is back up there.'

You could see in his face, and by his celebrations that he was saying 'up yours' as he revelled in the goal.

Ok, it took a slight deflection but the technique was fantastic and shows what he can do - with more confidence and belief in his ability, and to be fair he has been improving with games and not just because of his work rate, commitment and determination that is making his a 'fans favourite', we are seeing a better player.

He needed this first league goal, in off his arse, back or whatever would have done me but such a fine strike and against Spurs made it even sweeter for all concerned! Now he has this I am hopeful we will see more to follow...

Yet again though, in the face of fresh 'speculation' of a move to Sheffield United, Nugent has once again reiterated his desire to stay with Pompey and prove Tony Adams' confidence in him is well placed: 'Tony has changed things and wants to do things his way now the job is his.

'I've been put out on the wing to do a job and I'm doing it. I'm just happy to be playing. I may not be in my best position but I've scored and I want to score a few more.

'Because I haven't been playing there are a few clubs I've been linked with. They are in the Championship, though, and I don't want to drop down.

'I want to prove I can do it at this level. Hopefully people will see what I can do.'

Tony Adams keeps saying 'he wants players that want to play for Portsmouth', this is what we all want - and this is something that Nugent has said over, and over, and over again since he joined us.

He was not one of the 'golden boys' in the past, so rarely got that chance - and injuries did not help - but he clearly wants to play for us and will give us his all. I can overlook a slight lack in quality for this and his contribution to the team can be worth as much as goals can, but with this first out of the way I feel that we can, and will, see more come along in the months ahead, so long as he continues to be given the chance...

Super David Nugent, the pompey Dirk Kuyt. I'd put the pennant deal to bed and him on the right. I think strengthening the middle is more important.
SUAC51
Great return on investment!
WalshWasGod
one goal doesnt make up for what has gone before tho i agree WalshWasGod, as i know you do not rate him at all, but as good as 'he' - you know who - was at convincing players to sign and getting the best out of them, if he did not fancy you who could do exactly the same job in reverse, he crushed nugent's confidence. he is not the greatest player around, but is showing improved quality the more he plays and his effort and commitment cannot ever be doubted - do we suddenly think we are 'so mighty' that these traits are no longer any good for pompey...
pompeyrug
Could I ask a question please? I thought Nuge did very well, but when I looked through the match live at Spurs several of them were saying he plays awful (well, until he scored, that is). Could someone tell me what they think Spurs were referring to?
Gandor1
Would have been better if he had got another one from the numerous chances but at least it's a start. Just as well as I think he's in for a long run in the team given that I doubt we will sign anyone in the next two weeks.
bluedr
ive been unconvinced by his ability to play on the right, but i think nugent is growing into the roll and offers us much more than anyone else that we have at the club in that roll. we are not flush with cash, you use what you have and play to your stengths, so as you say SUAC51 if pennant doesnt want to play for pompey, sod him, forget about him and put what money we would pay for him towards getting what we desperately need more than anything else, more central midfielders!
pompeyrug
he needed that goal, had the one on one came after the goal he would have scored - one on one with so much time to think about what you are going to do for your first league goal saw him blow it, less time, like his goal, and he would have scored. if only we could have reversed the 2 chances and he would have scored a couple at least, but it is a start...
pompeyrug
May it be the first of many for the lad!
Tantona
He took his goal absolutely brilliantly - I was loving sitting in the Spurs end, almost bursting, my face getting redder and redder as I wanted to cheer as loud as possible! At first I really didn't like him out on the right but he was excellent against Spurs and I think for the first time I actually didn't want Nugent to be subbed.
PFCGino
Time will tell...but it's always nice when someone is able to say "up yours" to their old boss.
hammersmithblue
Well, up to a point it was worth waiting for as it was against Spurs. Trust like buses the next one comes along soon? However, Nugent thinks he needs 2 touches instead of one, he take one touch when he should shoot first time. The strangest point was why Adams felt he should take him off & replace him with Utaka???
storagematt
Great Goal lets hope its first one of many but you cant knock nuge for his comitment to Pompey he certaintly wants to be part of us
sea-juicer
Agreed matt - he took his goal very well and that was struck first time, if he'd taken a touch then the defenders would have dealt with him. Excellent goal against Spurs, excellent performance. The fact he wants to play and gives 110% should make up for the previous lack of goals!
PFCGino
His original shot wasn't actually going in... but it deflected off Gareth Bale! Anyway, looking solely at goals misses the point. He ran Bale into the ground, he got back to help johnson, and he got in some excellent positions. He is visibly improving game by game, so I think we will see a lot more of him. When he came off, I noticed some people complaing that it was bad "tackticly" - he was completly dead, and could barely run anymore. tony had no choice!
pompeycarpet
He's playing out of position, he runs his arse off all night, and you never see him complain, even when he's fit to drop. What more could you ask for. Particularly right now when we need people to fight for the cause. Utaka, for sure, doesn't do any of that and he isn't really playing out of position. All he ever needed was a manager playing him and a chance to get a bit of confidence. So much for HR's "man management" skills.

Super Super Super David Nugent !!! Get In Lad !!!
tommo3146
We could give Utaka to War on Want or Age Concern. They could sell him in their Lucky Dip Box.
Gandor1
things worth thinking about. 1. if we go down Crouch and few others will go. without much cash Nuge would, and has already be a decent striker for us in that division. 2. With Corporal Punishment now coaching him he may well improve his poor finishing. 3. when we do need another striker up with Crouch he can do a reasonable job provided shooting improves. 4. if pennant or A N Other R/winger does not sign he's infinitely better than John Uselessattacker. well done Nuge
plymouth graham
John Uselessattacker (lol) PG that one should surely stick !
Well done Nuge, We could all see by the look on your face what it meant to you and the reaction you got from the fans there made it oh so sweeter - Benjani plugged away and eventually came good and became a legend.. You have the same opportunity now - Go grab it with both hand and sore the winner at the Fratton End against Villa next Tuesday.. after you've scored a Hat-trick against Swansea of course !
Chix
It was great for him to get one over on the old boss, now I'm looking forward to him rewarding those of us who stuck by him and said 'give the lad a chance' by making it the first of many many. Must confess when he missed that one with only Gomes to beat i was wondering if he would ever make it - but he did us proud. and he wasn't afraid to be totally honest in the post-match interview as well. Good on yer, Nuge.
tracyc
Utaka on sunday came off the bench and was proper pump!! That lad needs to sort it or move on.
