Pennant to sign - according to The Sun anyway!

Well, The Sun says we are £95m in debt but still Tony Adams has been 'given permission' to give Jermaine Pennant £50,000 per week and will sign him for £3m after the winger 'snubbed' Milan in favour of a move to Pompey... Although The Mirror also says we will sign him, but for £2m!

We are strapped for cash without a doubt, but £95m in debt - jog on!

Despite the lack of funds issue I could maybe still see a £3m offer being made, but I am not sure that Liverpool would accept this to be honest - that said he would leave for nothing in the summer if he did not sign a new contract, but £50,000 per week! It is wages of that kind that have contributed to us getting into the mess that we are, so I would find it hard to believe that we would allow two top, top earners to go - and others before those two this month actually I guess - only to replace them with another massive earner, who is quite frankly in my thinking not actually that good, without a doubt not a £200,000 per month player!

The 'claim' is that he has held talks with us and we hope to get the deal sorted in time for him to make his debut against Spurs in Sunday - whilst the thought of a genuine right winger coming in does appeal and will give us a more natural balance, even if I do not exactly like the fella, I am not convinced by this if truth be known.

The Arsenal connection, and the off the field problems that both he and our manager have had in the past make it almost 'too easy' a link for me, but maybe my cynicism that we will sign no one is getting too much and making me over cynical...

The same 'report' also says that we are 'close to agreeing' a loan deal with Madrid for Argentine striker Javier Saviola until the end of the season - again, I cannot see it but then again who knows in this crazy world of football these days!

tbh rug your last sentence says it all who really knows anymore but i hope in a way we don't replace the big earners with more cause thats not what we need unless we've got more funds than every1 is being lead to believe (i'm not hopeful lol). but i just hope we do get in a couple of good quality players for the center make us strong again, and if possible for it to be by the weekend lol. oh and as much as i'd like to see Saviola at pompey i really dont see it happening, at all

Love to Saviola, but reaaly wouldn't believe it until he was in blue, Pennant I don't know, he has talent and temperement, its just which he has more of!

I am beginning to think that our signings will be.....Belhadj, Johnson, Davis, Hughes and Kranjar with one possible new loan

Don't forget with loan deals fellas they're wages may have to be honoured but the receiving club doesn't always necessarily pick up the whole tad - It is possible the if Pennant comes Liverpool could still pay half his wages - that way everybody wins. I doubt he is on anyway near 50,000 a week now (nearer 25,000 tops) and despite the desire to buy/loan players I can not see Peter Storrie paying over the odds - We need to keep the club on an even keel

Okay, having been up all night working on my essay thats due in for today, I feel that by 12 I should have everything wrapped up and sent in (deadline at 3). If so, I'll go down to FP and sit around, looking for players and lookalikes. If I see anyone, I'll run home and post on here, so you all find out first. This is assuming that theres is a 1pm press conference. If there isn't I'm wasting my time.

We are allowed two domestic loans, and I think several European loans. We have Traore in from Arsenal, so only one domestic loan left. I assume wwe can make multiple loans for Edu, Fernandes and Saviola

I think Pennants rubbish, never been a great footballer and not worth tuppence. Don't do it Tony, if you want someone who can cross a ball to Crouchy then make the other over-paid bu&&ers practice!

Cloud cuckoo land boys, those of us at Ashton Gate heard the rumours that no new faces were coming in, and in the Frog and Ferret afterwards one of the youngsters playing at the club was heard to say the financial situation was as bad as feared, and that no one would go, however nobody would be coming in. Saviola, how much would his wages be, Pennant as well come on!! We are skint and will have to plod on with what we have, God help us.

The Sun has also reported that "Pompey Superfan John Westwood will lead 3,000 fans to White Hart Lane". 1. He isn't a "superfan", he is a passionate Portsmouth fan. 2. Aren't we taking 1,700 fans to the away end, plus Gino hiding somewhere?. These lies make me doubt the validity of the content of the pennant article.

If we got those 2 signings i'd be happy even if that was all we got in this window. I don't know where people get the idea that Pennant is a poor player, he's got one of the highest sucesful crossing rates in the Premier League which is exactly what we want with Crouch up front. yes he's a bit of a scoundrel of the field but not even in the same league as Barton!

maybe if pennant got a run of games, and he would get that here, we could see the real deal? to be fair to him has he ever got that at liverpool - who would not have signed him had he not been any good!
if the fella is signing lets announce this today, and announce it soon...

Theres a reason Real and Milan are both in for him too. He's class. Get him in for Sunday Tone.

Pennant's the quality right winger we're missing, I've been dropping his name as someone we should go after for years! Yes, he's had his bad days, but they seem to be pretty much behind him - sign him up and give the lad a chance.....a far better choice on the right than the centrally minded Gary'O.

Not for me would prefer Hunt from Reading, really dissapointed that Pompey have not been able to confirm any transfers this week and I think indicates the current contempt for the fans. I now doubt whether there will be any additions as Tony seems happy to keep all of those players who were deemed surplus to requirements only 2 weeks ago.

I don't think all our of 'soon to be out of contract' players are surplus to requirements. There was no way that all 15(??) were going be let go at end of season. We will always need squad players, I think Tony just needed to see who was up for the fight!

We can't let 15 out of contract players go in the summer. We don't have the funds to replace them.

We wont have to fork out so much to recruit in the Championship will we, and the parachute payments will cover the signings of the players from Barnsley, Leeds and Brighton etc. familiar all this isnt it Martin Gregory and John Deacon!!
