Jermain Defoe 'was' expected to complete his move away from the club by Wednesday - although it is still likely to be done, and be done to Spurs so he can be reunited with the one he loves Harry Redknapp there are a few rumblings that I am getting that 'maybe' Inter are in the market with Jose Mourinho keen...
Redknapp is pleading his usual 'it is up to them what they do, if I cannot get him I will move on' speech but more interestingly are his claims on sky sports news that he feels he has done 'nothing wrong' in his pursuit of Defoe: 'the chairman has dealt with it. He has gone in there and made an offer.
'I have not gone in for any other players at Portsmouth. I have not made any enquiries there.
'If they don't want to sell him they don't have to.'
Rubbish has he done nothing wrong, if his constant mentioning of the player by name and his wanting to sign him is doing 'nothing wrong' then he has not, but he keeps mentioning him, and Stewart Downing at Boro by name, who has now requested a transfer as a result - if that is not 'tapping players up' then I do not know what it!
It also seems more than a strange coincidence that Defoe has 'received death threats similar to what Redknapp did when he went to Southampton' - the strikers apparent words, which seem to suggest that a certain someone might have been 'whispering' in his ear, and I also suggest he - or his agent - did prior to the cup game as well...
Ok, it is fair to say that he did not come here to play for Portsmouth Football Club, so we probably are better off without him in all honesty but the cheek of Redknapp to claim that he has done nothing wrong is incredible - he used to do it when he was here all the time, mentioning players by name and unsettling them, not to mention annoying rivals fans and managers. I seem to recall Steve Coppell being livid with him for his public pursuit of Nicky Shorey in the summer.
Did we not see him doing this when he was here, or did we choose not to?
It is a shame that the boot has had to be on the other foot for us to fully realise how disrespectful and underhanded his actions are...
In another bizarre twist on the dealing and his own defence Redknapp has not too long ago said that 'he would not sell Defoe' if he was Pompey - is this him trying to 'defend' his recent actions, even though he 'did nothing wrong', or is it because he knows that Spurs fans are actually torn on wanting Defoe back at the club - and they are torn! The Spurs fans vented their anger against Hossam Ghaly when he was due to come on for Spurs on Friday, and the fans call the shots! He walked on water here and got to do what he wanted, not at Spurs and he does not like this - how long before he walks, hmm...
Anyway, 'reports' were surfacing earlier that we had buckled in our valuation, but now reports are saying that Spurs are around £1.5m away from our valuation, with it also thought that Spurs are refusing to pay enough upfront - and 'if' word that I am getting coming through is right that Inter do want him, and more is being sought on this, it is thought they have offered around £18m - and they 'do' have money to play with, so if they are offering more than Spurs we should rightly accept that.
The signs are this could rumble on for a little longer yet, and it 'could' become feasible that he could still here at the weekend, hence why Tony Adams is starting to talk around the thoughts that he could play for us again, even though sky sports do not believe a word of it...
Well, as we all know, things are never simple with Pompey!
For the hell of it, and as I want to add it somewhere I will add in my own little bit of 'speculation' here and see where it gets us, talk at the weekend was that Reading were prepared to let Leroy Lita leave for as little as £350,000 - good god, if this is true we should get in there...
PLAY UP POMPEY!
