O'Neil bid rejected/Spurs given green light

Boro reject opening O'Neil bid?
Gary O'Neil is being constantly 'linked' with a return to Pompey, with many reports claiming the deal was all but done - however nothing has been concluded yet, in fact The Sun today says that our opening bid has been rejected?

We sold him for a 'reported' £5m around 16-months ago, even though he did not want to leave at the time and the implication is that he is desperate to return, but the alleged £2.5m offered has rejected - and if that figure is true then rightly so...

It is 'said' that Boro still owe us some outstanding fee for O'Neil so we would wipe that out, but the chances of getting him back for much less than we sold him for would be unlikely, although something around £4m should do the trick.

He, as with anyone domestically that will play in the FA cup this weekend, will of course be cup-tied if a deal is not tied up today - should he sit out Boro's game against Barrow then this would seem a clear indicator that he is 'coming home', then again of course we cannot just assume that we will beat Bristol City anyway!

==========

Hermann off to Rangers?
Hermann Hreidarsson made it clear yesterday that he is going to be leaving this month, and it is thought he will be granted a free transfer when he finds himself a new club - and reports today say that Rangers are keen on re-uniting him with a former teammate Pedro Mendes. Ipswich and Reading are also interested in the veteran.

I would not imagine that Hreidarsson is on 'massive wages', so quite why we would grant him a free transfer at this stage of the season seems slightly strange - a 'nominal fee' makes more sense? Would we not be better served keeping him until the summer and then releasing him as opposed to giving him away now?

He might want to leave but he is not one of those, or at least does not come across as one of those, that will 'sulk' and not 'give his all' when called upon... The kind of player our squad seems to be crying out for.

Richard Duffy on the other hand, yep he can go now and he is said to be close to completing a free to Coventry, although The Mirror says that it is in fact Millwall that have snapped him up? Either way fingers crossed!

==========

Premier league gives Defoe move the thumbs up
Can he or can he not return to Spurs?

This was the question that so many wanted answering regarding Jermain Defoe, but it seems that the premier league are happy for him to return to Spurs despite rules saying he cannot. Although in all fairness we are only talking a matter of days. Although that said it again demonstrates the willingness to 'bend' rules as and when it suits the premier league/FA!

Either way, rather than have a moaning, sulking, over paid and under working player labouring around here until the summer - not to mention causing unrest - we may as well let him 'go home'.

Spurs want Defoe back, he wants to leave lets get the deal done - but 'should' we do this before we face Spurs in a couple of weeks? That becomes the next question...

I was under the impression that the £5m we 'sold' Harry Redknapp for paid off the outstanding fee on Defoe but reports in today's papers 'claim' we still owe varying amounts, £3m-£5m depending on where you read it along with £3m for Younes Kaboul - so Spurs will write this debt off, putting money as well meaning he would cost them the sum of £12m.

I still feel we should hold out for more, we only got him 'cheap' last January as his contract was running down, in fact it ended that summer - he is on a long term deal here so, even though financially we are not in a position to 'let him rot', we do to a degree hold the cards, even more so if we 'really' do not need to sell anyone else, so £15m should be what we hold out for minimum.

To be honest I cannot see him opting for Villa or Citeh, although maybe 'megabucks' from Citeh could tempt him? Spurs, as said, is his so called 'home' so chances are he will return - at least there he knows that he is one of Redknapp's golden boys so will play week in week out regardless...

AS i've said elsewhere meet our fee demands or he plays 1 minute from the bench tomorrow so he's cup tied. i seem to remember 2 mins from the bench was all that stopped him playing in the cup for us last season. It would have a certain poetic justice.
Steve C
Dear God....selling Defoe and buying O'Neil......Taylor and Benji not been limked yet??
Tantona
Sure they will Tantona!
paultsmouth
Only a matter of time before we are linked with them isn't it, i reckon O'Neill would love to come home, and the chance to play in the centre of midfield where he wanted to play before. Benjy seems to get so many injuries now, i reckon that Hughes will make him available, how about Crouch and Benjani up front. I hope Hermann gets his move, he has served us well, and if he goes to Scotland he is nearly home!!
Owenspompey
Boro owe us, we owe Spurs (even though we were told we didn't) he Premier League breaks its own rules.. again... Why can't football be like the real world you want something you pay or it ... Imagine if we dealt like football....... I'll have a pint of Stella for £3 please I'll pay £1 now, a further £1.50 when I've finished it and the reamining 50p in ten installments over the next ten months... unless of course I pass the pint to a friend then I'll be liable to a sell on fee and have to pay an extra 25p !
Chix
Rug, I'd like to see Gary O back as I do feel he is still a good player so lets hope a deal can be done there. Good Luck to Hermann and Duffy where ever they end up. As for JD, if we can get £15M for him then I would take it. No use in keeping someone who does not want to be there. Take the cash and put in a bid for Doyle at Reading who I think would be a great addition.
bluedr
Chix, that's quality. Might try it tonight to see what response I get.
bluedr
According to the Scottish Sun, Pompey have bid £9m for Scott Brown of Celtic, we have alledgedly watched him 3 times and his performance against Rangers has convinced us that he is the man
paultsmouth
do they get any sun in scotland?
Steve C
How many top scottish players are there in the prem? £9m are we mad? GON yes please, runs all day, can cross & score.
storagematt
Scott brown is a great player for celtic. He is like another gary o'neil but he scores more. But £9 mill no thanks gary o'niel any day.Hermann might as well go for a free transfer as to be fair we aint gunna get a large sum for him
stfc ballboy
He can certainly run all day and cross but he only got 16 in 174 apps for us and has only ever scored twice for Boro. I think we should be looking elsewhere...
SUAC51
Kevin Nolan anybody?
NinjaTim
he - o'neil - would score more goals from a central role wouldnt he? yep, bring him back - he will give his all to get us out of a hole, and that is what we need...
defoe will probably be gone by the end of the day, sky sports news has just reported 'he missed training due to illness', ********* is he ill!
pompeyrug
if we want to get the best value for money, I think we need to look abroad...
pompeycarpet
Just reading that Cranie is back with us after his loan spell at Charlton. Wonder what the future holds for him?
bluedr
I'm not convinced Gary is a goal scorer, wherever he plays. no question we need players with his commitment and workrate, but I really think we need goals from midfield too. Diop, Davis, little, hughes, utaka, traore, kranjcar...Davis scored against blackburn but i cant think of any others. If we're bringing someone back i'd rather have pedro
SUAC51
bluedr i think thats a good point if craine has just come back where will he go ? sell him ? or will he be a permant replacement for johnson ( if he goes ) with mark wilson on the right ?. TAke govou on !!!!
stfc ballboy
Rug I'm guessing that means he won't be fit enough for the Cup Tie tomorrow leaving him available to play in future rounds of the cup, just not for us! However if Spurs get knocked out by Wigan tonight then he may get well really soon!
bluedr
Actually that is how Chix pays for his Stella!! (see above) Not much changes really then and the PL make and break their rules as they see fit.
eastneydave
stfc, not sure about Cranie. Is an Eng U21 player so can't be all that bad and may be worth giving a chance between now and the summer?
bluedr
come on wigan! ...anyway, I view Cranie as a sort of "pamerot" player - he can play anywhere, centre back his is best position - but he's not brilliant. Having said that, last season, he WAS brilliant against man u, then on loan at QPR, however I don't think e's been the same since he broke his leg.
pompeycarpet
the PL will always bend the rules to keep the "big" clubs in the league/happy. that way, they make more money...etc.
pompeycarpet
We have lots of "holding" players in midfield - davis, hughes, diop - but the only really "forward thinking" midfielder - and he really isn't that forward thinking - is Mvuemba. Gary O'neil I guess would at least look to get forward and support the forwards more, which we need, and he would inject energy into midfield - which we need. However I think he might be played down the right if he does come
pompeycarpet
Still would like to see us splash some cash and bring in Stephen Hunt from Reading, that boy gets forward and would definitely supply some quality balls for Big Pete which we lack at the moment.
bluedr
well i think it is a near cert that mvuemba will get this chance in the middle of the park tomorrow carpet - so lets see if he can get forward and support the strikers... hughesie and diop are out, so its davis and mvuemba in the middle. kranjcar on the left and wilson on the right for me. crouchy and nugent up front, altho i suspect it will be crouchy and kanu.
pompeyrug
i could deal with that bluedr, i still feel that wilson is a ready made player for a right sided role in midfield ahead of johnson tho - i have been calling for wilson to get this chance, maybe more by 'necessity' than anything else, this has come along, but my has he shown he has a fantastic delivery on him.
pompeyrug
he can sure cross the ball - and I agree, I think he would compleiment Glen Johnson, just as Traore and Belhadj compliment eachother. Having said that, if we could get Steven Hunt, that would also be a fantastic aquisition... I would just end up feeling slightly sorry for Reading, as I want to see them back in the premiership ASAP... they made things much more fun!
pompeycarpet
considering the situation we're i i think gon would be a great signing, he knows what it is needed and is guaranteed to fight for the teams life.
Steve C
Please dont sign Scott Brown, he is not what we need at all, and if the price is 9 million that is way too much. Brown is no different to the ball winners we have already, we need someone like D'Alessandro, who i see is linked with Chelsea, what a great move that would be to have him back.
Owenspompey
Love to D'Allesandro back but it ain't going to happen mores the pity. Still think Niko will provide the craft in midfield if we move him into the middle.
Steve C
Get the old boys back, Gary, matty and you cant forget D'Alessandro, friggin legend :)
Gleams
why do they bend these rules? what's the point of having them in the first place!
merlin
GON is not much of a goal scorer, but he's Pompey through and through and will work hard for us - has to be a worthwhile addition to the squad if we can get him back. I hope the club don't let Defoe go before we play Spurs - that should be the deal, we don't cup tie him, and he doesn't play against us.
tracyc
if we're getting all the old boys back can we get Prosinecki back as well.
Steve C
Still no real news is there? I would have thought the Defoe thing would be done and dusted, and it must only be the Spuds as O'Neill has stated that Defoe is not a target for him, so it only leaves one team in the hunt now doesn't it. Niko has all the skills and attributes, but just appears not to give a damn most of the time.
Owenspompey
O'Neil may not score much but he does have a good record of scoring important goals, so I really do think he will provide exactly what we need. I can't believe that nothing has been said on Utaka, I thought he would be the first to be offloaded.
pompeywa
Sorry Steve, we couldn't afford Prosi back now, have you seen the price of 40 Marlborough for a signing on fee?
wakey
I worry about the links with Govou as a striking replacement for harry's 'rent boy'. This is an entry from wiki about govou. Govou has often been criticised for his lack of composure in front of goal, especially in high-pressure situations, which partly explains why he now occupies a deeper role, often in wide positions, rather than playing as the focal point of the team's attack. His offensive role, however, does not prevent him from often playing an important role in recovering possession for his team, due largely to his great athletic capabilities and high levels of fitness. These attributes help mask deficiencies such as his heading ability. During the 2004–05 season, Paul Le Guen handed Govou the captain's armband during the long absence of club captain Claudio Caçapa due to injury. Le Guen's decision was largely motivated by the loyalty displayed towards the club by Govou, in face of much speculation linking him with moves away from the club.[citation needed] Indeed, for the last three seasons Govou has been regularly linked to possible transfers away from Lyon, much helped by Govou's admittance to finding the possibility of playing abroad an attractive one. However, Govou has continued to prolong his career in Lyon and extended his contract with Lyon until 2010.[citation needed] Govou has recently expressed interest in leaving Lyon, inviting newly-crowned FA Cup winners Portsmouth FC and Fulham FC to bid for the French international. [1]

Sorry - more gobbing off from me. I would think that an attempt to bring Benjani back would be a sensible move, despite the risks of players returning to old haunts. That said, I wonder if he would come back to the club that fleeced him? I guess it depends whether he thinks it was the club of harry
wakey
hi lads i think defoe has made it clear he does not want to stay pulling out of tomorrows game unwell yer right see what sunday brings
paul7collins
heard benjani is back up for sale at city.Maybe a swap deal with defoe plus cash
stfc ballboy
no to govou, GON not convinced though i love him he great lad, £9M for a Scotish midfielder?... we were linked with him last year but much less,,i still thiink we may get Delph from Leeds Utd
plymouth graham
Delph is linked to Arsenal and Spurs too though Gra ... I'd still go Govou and deply him on the right of midfield .. Seems it's his strenght given what wakey found on Wiki ... Benjani and GON back.. yep I'd go for that but can we have Matty Tyalor as well.. al players that loved the shirt !
