Belhadj signs

Finally some good news, Nadir Belhadj has signed a permanent contract with Pompey.

The Pompey Site has confirmed that he will officially become a full time Pompey player on Thursday and he has signed a 4 and a half year contract for a fee of 4.5m, which is around £4.4m - clearly, as promised, so credit where it is due, some of the Lassie money has been used here.

Tony Adams, who played a major role in his arriving on loan in the first place, is thrilled that we have turned his deal into a permanent one: 'I'm delighted to have secured Nadir as a permanent signing.

'Nadir is an excellent acquisition for the club and even Arsene Wenger commented on his ability to spring from defence to attack so quickly. He has great pace and energy and is a terrific crosser of the ball, too.

'At the moment he's playing left back and developing a good relationship with Niko Kranjcar, but he can also play left midfield.

'His enthusiasm is first class and he's already a big favourite with the Fratton Park fans - they recognise he gives everything.'

This is fantastic news, I am delighted that we have tied him down to a long term contract - hopefully this is a statement of intent and not something to 'appease the natives' before a full scale clearout goes ahead!

My own thinking is the Belhadj and Niko Kranjcar partnership is not working anywhere near as well as the one that the Algerian had with Armand Traore, so I would go back to that one - but where does that leave the Croatian? For me we have struggled more since he returned...

fantastic news, and just as i leave a comment on another artcle saying i bet the belhadj deal isnt done. with our central problems, i can see niko playing central in front of davis for now, with the whippets down the left.

I have man flu, and ache from top to bottom, but at least that has put a smile on my face. Now we have 4 1/2yrs to teach him how to defend!!!

Great signing but like a young Glenn Johnson he needs to work on the defensive side of his game. Johnson improved defensively i see no reason why Belhadj won't too. Now lets play Traore and Belhadj down the left. Move Kranjcar into the middle so he can create for the forwards.

Agree with Steve C, I don't like Niko on the flanks. He can't defend & leaves the full back over exposed. Great to sign the bel boy, the first of many???

Good to see the boy sign, just hope it's not all of the initial Lassie payment! I'd like to see Hunt from Reading in a Pompey Shirt!

phew... I was getting concerned! In the warm up before the arsenal game, all the players were passing around in twos/threes, belhadj was trying to join in in various places, and failing! then after half time, when all the players were wishing eachother luck, he wasn just standing out on the wing on his own (allthough eventually David james DID go over to him...) anyway... phew!

we should have agreed the deal in pounds in the summer... then it would have been half that much!

storagematt haha you make me laugh Niko can't defend & leaves the full back over exposed LOL What did Bakary Sagna and Eboue did ??? Nothing. BTW the problem is that fullbacks in Pompey are to offensive and they can't defend at all every time Kranjcar cuts in and plays the ball to Belhadj he seems to forget that his position is LEFT BACK not a WINGER(and he never returns to defend only when he doesn't go forward at all then he plays a little bit of defence). And one more thing don't know if you knew Pompey conceded the most goals on the left side when Armand and Nadir played then Niko and Nadir. btw Niko is known for closing the flanks in Croatia we missed him against England Walcott would never get that hatrick down our left side because he always pushes wingers into the middle and then they hit the wall named Kovac. :) That is how Pompey should play.

why are there so many fans devoted to niko? id like to see someone as DJ#1, and see if they can defend his every move.

I'm not sure whether the reason for us being defencivly useless is him, or us being defenclivly useless is causing him to loose confidence, and be rubbish. Either way, I think that Harry Redknapp must surely go down as the best goalkeeping coach around!

Krunchie didn't do a lot on Sunday, he hardly ever ran with the ball at all, wasn't very impressed with him to be honest. Good news about Belhadj - sends out a message we are not TOTALLY skint and having to fire-sale off all our players. Not that the press will take any notice though.

I just feel that Kranjcar will hurt teams more in the middle and he'll chip in with a good few goals as well.

although tracyc... Belhadj is worth far more than that 4million...It could just be seen as another "investment"... (not that I want to be pessimistic or anything!)

Lets hope the signing is the first of a couple over the next few weeks, i am sure he will go on to be an excellent player for us, as for Nico, he needs to shape up and be counted over the next few weeks.

Belhadj is pure class and hopefully his work with Crunchie down the left is just starting to blossom.

Nice to see the lad sign, especially for a long contract. That helps makes things a bit more stable. Presuming we can keep him, Niko should be playing where he plays for Croatia. Down the middle, a free role in behind Defoe and Crouch ( presumably soon to become Nugent & Crouch ) Either Glenn or Marc Wilson are good on the right, Traore could play on the left, but I assume he's going back to Arsenal. If we're going to give Niko that free role though, we badly need a midfield terrier snapping at heels and providing the cover our defence has sorely, sorely missed.

4 million is not a bargain, he could turn out to be a really good buy, but surely he needs to play further up the field. If we are to lose Defoe to the Villa, involve Shorey in any deal, and at least we have a steady proper left back, that would mean Belhadj could play further forward.

good call Owens, it would have been nice to see shorey arrive in the summer - so part of a possible defoe deal to villa would be ok...
today claims a 30m big for crouch, defoe and johnson has been turned down from spurs - get real HR you would do well to get crouchy and defoe for that let alone johnson too...

Rug, i hope that the club stand firm on this offer, Storrie and the owner need to be strong and insist that if the players are going then the proper price will have to be paid. I see that Distin is insisting that he will be staying, that is good news, and as soon as we get Kaboul back we could begin to improve again at the back.

That's if there's any truth in that rumour anyway - I suspect it might be papertalk anyway - but if it is true, glad its been turned down. Anyway, we all know Defoe probably can't go back to Spurs this transfer window, also wouldn't Crouch be unable to move until the summer, isn't there a rule about how many clubs in a season? Don't think Crouchie wants to go anyway.

Belhadj deal was always on, now I expect us to loan rather than buy in Jan(if possible) with Saha going back to Chelsea opens up another option as well.
