'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Angry reaction/Davis' thoughts/Garcia and more

Pompey furious at Johnson and Defoe allegations
Reports that Glen Johnson had been shown around the Liverpool training ground ahead of a proposed 9m move to the league leaders - a 'laughable' amount - have been angrily denied by the player, his agent and Peter Storrie, with 'reports' claiming legal action could be taken against the paper is question...

Storrie has told The News that no approach has been made for Johnson, or anyone else: 'we have had no approaches for any of our players and that includes Glen.

'I know that his agent has taken this story up with the newspaper and is pushing for an apology. Glen is livid, everyone is, it's an outrageous story.

'To say we have had a bid for him is a lie, it's just silly season.'

To be honest I do not see how Liverpool can afford Johnson! Ok, we still owe them money for Peter Crouch but their financial plight is well documented, and a fee well, well in excess of 15m would be needed for the best right back in the country at the moment...

Harry Redknapp also made claims that a 'massive bid' had been placed for Jermain Defoe, which meant he could not afford to take the striker back to Spurs - despite the bloody fact that he cannot do this anyway!

Pompey have confirmed that 'an initial enquiry' had been made for the England striker, which might have been the Spurs one, but this was refused with him saying that only a very, very big offer would be accepted - Villa and Citeh are also thought to be interested, but Martin O'Neill has denied making an offer.

'Reports' today claim that Defoe has expressed a desire to return to Spurs, but a 24m price tag has been put on his head - I would love that to be true, but cannot see us holding out for that, but you never know: 'we have had a tentative enquiry about Jermain and told the club concerned he was not for sale unless it was for a very, very big offer.

'As with any of our players, obviously if an exceptional offer came in, such as that for Lassana Diarra, we would consider it, as any club would.

'But no-one has made a bid.'

Maybe that is why he cannot afford him - he will not get him on the cheap, and that is how it should be!

Is this 'positive fighting talk', or 'positive spin talk' from Pompey? I have to admit it is hard to believe much that is said these days so to use the favourite phrase 'lets just wait and see'...

Davis - we just get on with it!
All the reports of players being sold is not phasing Sean Davis at all.

As much as he does not want players to go he knows that players are very much wanted, and could be highly sellable assets. Should they go then he has basically said this is an 'unfortunate' thing but those that are left behind - and others than come in - will just have to knuckle down and get on with it.

Well said that man!

Distin draws from the positives
Sylvain Distin was encouraged by the defensive showing against Arsenal, and performance all-round and is looking for us to draw from this and build on it.

We have already conceded more goals this season than we did in the whole of the last one, shipping 47 in 27 games, whereas we only conceded 43 in 47 in total last season also racking up a record 23 clean sheets.

The defence has been poor, which I feel is leading to David James making so many mistakes as he does not have the faith or belief in those ahead of him so he is trying to do so much. Criminal errors have been made by the defenders and their lack of pace is being highlighted by the protection, or lack of, from the midfield clearly is not the same as it was last season, which obviously must be adding to this as well.

You win and lose as a team, so you defend as a team - I do think we have shown signs of this improving so with a couple of tweaks and a steady side, in as much as a constant team selection, I still hold out hope of seeing things improve.

Distin also recently hit back at claims that he could leave for Arsenal, insisting that his comments were taken out of context and he is not looking to leave, he is in fact happy where he is.

Garcia a possible loan option?
Talk that Luis Garcia could return to England started a few weeks back, with it 'claimed' a loan return ahead of a possible summer return was in the pipeline, with several English sides approached by Atletico Madrid.

Guillem Balague, the Spanish football 'expert' believes that we are one of them along with Boro, Blackburn and Spurs.

He 30-year-old would be an 'interesting' option for me, and alongside either Davis or Richard Hughes who would offer him the protection to get forward and create, and of course score, could be an exciting prospect...

However Royston Drenthe, linked with a loan move at the weekend, apparently will not be coming to Pompey. It is claimed that we did approach Madrid about a loan until the summer - at the recommendation of Johnny Metgod, who coached him at Feyenoord - but this has been rejected?

Well guys plenty to get your teeth into here, so share your thoughts below...

At last the club has decided to make a comment on rumours aimed at destabilising the club. Maybe too little too late but at least they've realised saying nothing is only making things worse.

is it 'positive fighting talk', or 'positive spin talk' from pompey tho? with so much 'spin' and contridiction doing the round over the years as far as the club are concerned its hard to know what to believe isnt it...
Would you send Peter Storrie to get you 50 quid out of the cash point with your card, not likely. Modern Day Pinnochio!
quality bluedr, it made me - and everyone else in the house, and we have a big, big houseful at the moment - laugh alot!
Pompey has always been that way. I just hope we can get the transfer window out the way and get a couple of good months in before this all starts again.

Great News about Belhadj signing long term!
asking for 24m for defoe is the sort of talk that every club apart from pompey seems to give, so finally we are talking like a real team. at least it seems that players will only go if they are paid over the odds for, a situation i cant remember pompey being in before.
24m for Defoe, your avin a laugh. In all seriousness he's not bad but personaly i would'nt want him back, admitidly he is way better than we currently have but that is not that hard to beat, if we were able to get him for less than 6m then maybe, but that aint gonna happen. i believe you still owe us half the fee we sold him for which has to be paid by the end of Jan so ??????????plus the dosh you still owe the bin dippers, not looking all that rosy for you is it, you are hardly in a strong position too negotiate, as i said previously i dont really rate Defoe, he is a flat track bully imo.
you yourself admit that he's better than what you have, and how much did you pay for bent? surely that justifies 24m any day of the week.
We could all be over worrying, (from the king of worries), maybe we won't lose too many & if we do then it's for very serious money to clubs bigger & better than us.
lets hope so matt - i can always accept players moving much more if it is a genuine step forward and for the kind of money we should get, diarra is a fine case in point, lets hope that is what our future dealings going out will be like, we have given players away for peanuts for too long...
i thought that the 5m for we 'sold' redknapp to spurs for paid off what we owed for defoe? i also thought that we did still owe money for crouchy, but the stipulations of their deal was we paid around 7m up front? i do no doubt we owe money for crouchy, not so sure about owing that much for defoe...
Aussiespur you are making the mistake of believing all the rubbish the press put out - and what your manager says. The press are continually exaggerating our financial 'plight' and touting our players for sale. As sick of it as I am, I know it will carry on till the end of the transfer window. It may be true that JD wants to go back to Spurs, his body language says so, but I don't believe he can anyway. If he does want to go, then he can, we don't need players who won't play for us.
Rug, interesting point about Jamo, I've been spending a lot of time mulling over his lack of form. Its easy to jump to the conclusion he wants away, but I'm not sure its true, this started right from the beginning of the season, also I don't think a move further from Devon would suit his personal circumstances at all. When he first arrived he overcame a lot of mistakes and became fantastic again, a kind of 'indian summer' in his career. Now many only be a dip in form, worsened by our poor defence. Or it may be that age is finally catching up with him? Also he used to see a Sports Shrink, who had him doing all kinds of mind exercises, I haven't noticed him doing this while warming up lately - he used to sit on the pitch after warming up (to focus?) at Arsenal he just went straight down the tunnel. Perhaps he should pick that up again too. Of course it may be that he has half an eye away, which would be a shame, but if it is, well any player who doesn't want to play for us can go. It troubles me though, how quick many Pompey fans seem to have turned against him though, he's been fantastic for us for 2 years, and we wouldn't have won the cup without him, don't we owe him a little better support than this?
We have not just turned on Jammo, what most fans are saying is that if he is out of form then he has no divine right to be in the team. He has been making more mistakes than ever this season, and if we have to give Jamie a go, then so be it, managers cannot have favourites who they will not drop. Who is that muppet from Spurs, after what they paid for Bent and the Russian i am sure Jermaine will go back for 5 million, to sit on the bench again no doubt!!
owens i agree that managers shouldnt have favourites and jamo should be dropped for ashdown on current form, but didnt you criticise adams for dropping our best striker against arsenal? just a point...
I did, but we are not good enough to go and play for a draw against Arsenal, if someone was to play out of position against Arsenal and do a job for the team then why not ask Defoe to do it instead of Nugent who can't stand up half the time. If Defoe had said he didnt fancy it, or proved he could not do it, then he could have been taken off, but Defoe is always likely to score, where as Nugent, Davis, Hughes and Diop come on!!
because at least nugent can run, and he puts effort in - something you want/need when your playing out of position.
About time the club reacted. And I agree on Jamo, the defence has to work as a unit and if one part of it fails the others panic/make mistakes.
tracyc, you may well be right about believing to much that you read, I did'nt get those figures from the press i got them from one of the guys whop posts occassionaly on vital spurs his name is Gizeanisking and there is absolutely nothing that he does not know about our finances and what is owed to us and by whom etc etc, some on our site reckon he is really Daniel Levy...jbaker yes he is far better than what we have and yes we paid well over the top for Bent, imo he is an unmitigated disaster and Pav is marginaly better, but i still would'nt want Defoe back, i am a firm believer in never going back and i think he is very overated, a flat track bully imvho
Carps, to run you need to be able to stay on your feet, for some strange reason, Nugent finds this really hard to do.
