It has been a difficult few weeks as it is, but all the 'rumour', 'scaremongering', 'speculation' and more often than not 'lazy' journalism, and so many times from a paper that is 'supposed' to be backing Pompey - although bridges look to have been burnt once again and talking to this paper is looking unlikely from those on high - has not helped. All the reactions, sometimes unbelievably dramatic, that had gone with it left me mentally exhausted and I needed a break... So, after a few days away, trying to chill out, relax and refreshing the mind I am back from my self-imposed exile, and with the thoughts I have had during this time - oh yea, thanks to the fellas for keeping the site ticking over!
You cannot pick up a paper or open up t'internet without reading something 'anti Portsmouth' these days - then you will soon find a denial or counter claim from someone connected to the club, be that from Peter Storrie or 'Portsmouth spokesman' Gary Double...
A player can make a comment about his commitment to the club, that will be ran, but within minutes mild fears that that same player might have shared in the same interview that 'maybe' players could leave suddenly appear and a new spin is put on it saying 'so and so fears Pompey exodus'... Harry Redknapp claims 'financial troubles' at Pompey upon his departure - still something, even if it was not exactly 'a secret' and not spoken about prior, that I am most annoyed about his saying when he left - and this is pounced upon and used by the media at any given moment, then come the denials from Pompey...
Player after player is 'linked' with a move to Spurs, but maybe others - with 'release clauses' speculated, something that is also denied by Storrie as far as Lassana Diarra is concerned. You feel for the fella a bit as some will not believe him as they feel he has let us down in the past with what he says and what actually happens - in many ways he is in a no win situation, almost damned if he does and damned if he does not. He had it right though, do not believe all you read - papers, as said even our own, are out for a good story - or at least what they think is a good story and are not afraid to bend it whatever way they can!
'Takeover', or 'investment' talk is rife - again something that is openly admitted to a degree, but then denied. For what it's worth I am still sure that something is going to happen on this note.
What is and what is not true is not known, the only ones that really know what is true are the ones at boardroom level, so all I am doing now is taking most of what I read in the media with a pinch of salt - just because the papers tell us this and that it does not make it true! Whilst I might have become a bit cynical and sceptical about what is true that also comes out of the club in response, at the end of the day I feel that I have to believe this and have trust in it more than what the media keeps telling us! The club 'might' bend the truth and shield us from some things but at the end of the day we are the fans of the club so they cannot be bullshitting us completely and will not, and cannot afford, to sell us down the river.
We are an 'easy' target at the moment, we are under new management, and a manager that is unproven, but that is what sells papers and if they can 'sensationalise' the story all the better for them - maybe they are not doing this, but the chances are a large proportion of it is 'sensationalised'. Jealousy and envy can also play a part, we have a team packed full of stars that 'little ol' Portsmouth' should not have - the media has not been 'Pompey friendly' for years, so why should this change now? Redknapp's relationship with the media helped alleviate some of that pressure, but without our 'saviour' and 'only hope of continued growth and possible success gone' we are clearly 'done for'... so they would have us think!
Let the media write what they want to write, maybe we might not help ourselves at times with Tony Adams' 'heart on the sleeve' comments for example, although to be fair again these are often twisted and painted to suit those printing them - but then it is down to you to make your own conclusions as to what you want to believe, but not everything that you read or hear is true is it...
Worst case scenario, 'if' the worse does happen is that going to change your support? We support Portsmouth Football Club do we not? The longing for the superstars to stay, the success to continue and our name to grow will not disappear but come what may that is the underlining factor we must remember 'Portsmouth Football Club' is what we are about and that will not change or go away regardless!
All in all regardless of anything there is not a single thing that we can do to alter or change what 'could', 'might' or even 'will' happen so, and do not mistake this attitude for one of not caring as Pompey means the world to me, more than most other things in life - if it did not I would not spend hours travelling to watch us and thousands of pounds to do so - basically we need to be thinking que sera sera...
