South Africans in advanced talks?

Another day and more speculation - with the latest 'rumour' being that a South African consortium of businessmen are lining up a bid to buy Pompey?

Rumours of this broke late yesterday/early today, but Sky sports news is now reporting that 'they understand' this consortium are in 'advanced negotiations' to buy Pompey - as with other reports, if this is a full buyout or investment is not known.

This consortium is said to be in the gold mining business, which - and I quote from something someone told me - 'has been a safe banker over the years and it is only going to get safer'. So in theory leaves us in safe hands...

There is still talk of the Pini Zahavi consortium, but the implications of that are not something that appeals to me greatly as do we want to become a 'feeder club' for others - most feeder clubs are not up to much are they? My thinking is this, although maybe attracting some star young talent in the short term, it is not going to give us the chance to carry on our moves forward.

Do Sky sports have this right?

I could not say, but I will stick my neck on the line and say a takeover or large investment is going to come our way in the not too distant future - of that I am pretty sure, I just hope that whatever happens it is in the best interest of the club and indeed us the fans!

'A spokesperson' for Pompey would not comment on financial matters at the club.

Rug, are they hoping to find a few Carats under FP once we move? Lets wait and see what happens.

that all we can do 'wait and see what happens' - its the best way as we hear so many things now dont we... a takeover/investment is something that im sure we will see in the near future tho - its clear that we need it to carry on moving forward. with a new stadium and training ground the world would potentially be our lobster!

I was reading the "feeder club thing" the other day, and that should be a no no... plus the talk of brining Grant back here. Not in the best interests of the club, if we want to go foward and keep our top players we need dosh plus continuity.

2 types of gold. One of them is fools. We'll see what happens but seems more hopeful than the insulting 'feeder club' cr4p.

Don't like the Zahavi deal and have found South Africans very difficult to deal with in the past.

SS have a habit of getting these things right but its not a certain. gold is pretty good industry, ok its not abu dahbi type stuff but hey, if its the next step up, lets take it!

I doubt this is true,.. but as rumours go, particually regarding takeovers, there are "levels" of media - which correspond to nhow likely it is going to happen. Tabloids/setanta=random guess, sky=educated guess, official site=official, BBC=better late than never... in other words... who knows? but theyre more likely to find an asda underneath fratton park than gold...

If its going to happen lets hope its sooner rather than a dragged out affair, as it could affect the team as a result.

I think this one has more legs than the Pini Zahavi story and there have been rumblings for a few weeks now.. Eastneydave reported Africian Gentlemen being shown around Fratton Park on Saturday in yesterdays Toast.. Maybe we will be rebranded as the Pompey Alchemists !... I can see the headline now... POMPEY GIVEN MIDAS TOUCH - remember where you saw it first !

I work with a lovely South African. But she's skint. The ones with money are the ones you can't trust. Not much different from any other sort of capitalist, really, just with a more annoying accent. Gold has a very grubby reputation, historically, but if we were going to oppress the indigenous african peoples and bother winning the Second Boer War in 1902, it is just as well that Pompey benefits from it a hundred-odd years later rather than any other team.

Can anybody give me a single FACT pointing to any truth about any of the supposed different takeover plans/consortiums/feeder schemes/need to sell players/South Africans/oil rich Saudis/super-agents/super-heroes? If you can then please let me know sources, quotes, numbers, proof, evidence, or whatever of just one little piece of truth or fact. I'd be very interested in this as I have apparently managed to read 37 articles, overhear 94 pub conversations, listen to 7.4 official club statements, radio shows and Sky Sports stories without hearing a single one... Thanks L&P

L&P .. You're not going to get one until a deal is done or not.. All you can do like the rest of us is piece together what we see hear read and make your mind up from there. Nobody involved in the deal (if indeed there is a deal) is going to utter a word until it is done as it would weaken their position... Personally I take ot all with a pinch of salt until I hear something officially from the club or any sources I have ... that said the last BIG newsroom tip I got (from a national who have never once let me down and informed me about Harrys Newcastle Offer and Benjani to City before SSN broke the news.. told me big Sam was Storries number one target.. the next day he appointed Adams !! .. Just gors to show until it's done it's all speculation.. Some love it, some hate it ..

L&P you don't until a deal is done, but dont let that stop you doubting it. It is happening and some of us have been sayng it for a while; you might of course ponder why also want this particular football rumour made the business pages of papers in 4 different countries, over 2 continents.

Hi Chix, good point - I guess what everybody believes is that there is no smoke without fire huh? I have heard rumours of five different bodies supposedly representing Gaydamak to broker a deal and five different buyers. Well they can't all be true. My point wasn't to deride this discussion (which is effectively about a party none of us know anything about, possibly in talks to buy another party that none of us know is actually up for sale) but my point was a genuine request for anything concrete. There is certainly a lot of 'smoke' that is for sure. Just one teeny fact might make a lot of difference, after all, once a wild rumour has started it doesn't take much for all the other hacks to type a few columns of copy-cat nonsense.

Oh yes, the super-hero rumour I heard was a cartel of rich crime lords including Dr Octopus, Baron von Greenback and Mr Burns planning to buy the club and its debt. Apparently they are lining up the Invisible Man to play striker, Optimus Prime in centre-midfield and Skeletor to replace Joe Jordan. It must be true as it made the papers across 3 galaxies. The Invisible Man could not be found to comment.

L&P (lol) Can you imagine the invisible man up front... Dave ..you did indeed mention this in Toast... a good point although (again according to the papers of course) they were not there to talk takeovers.. and Matt BBC Sport have rubbished it all but the guardian are still staying the 'rubbishing' is a smokescreen.. Who do we believe eh..? .. AND the BBC reported that it was all going ahead yesterday....

Last year the Queen visited the facilities St Marys as part of commissioning a new sport scheme. Let's hope she doesn't start bankrolling them in a shock 70m takeover.
