You do not need to justify yourself Tony!

You do not need to justify yourself Tony!

Tony Adams has had to fend a few questions asking why he left Jermain Defoe out of our starting 11 at Liverpool during the week - but why should he have to justify what he does?

Either way, Adams has, with him again insisting this was merely tactical and he is one of the England mans biggest fans: 'I am Jermain's biggest fan. Defoe wasn't dropped, of course not. I will make tactical decisions, technical decisions and emotional decisions. This time it was a tactical one.

'I want Jermain to be the top goalscorer for Portsmouth, he will be. I want him to be top scorer in the league and I think he can.

'But against the league leaders I wanted something different. We have been getting smashed up away from home, we have lost 3-0 at Braga, 6-0 at Manchester City.

'I felt we needed to be resilient and hard to beat first time out for me. That is why Jermain was rested.

'Jermain took it fine, he is 100 per cent behind me. I have had great support from everybody, but particularly from Defoe.'

I had absolutely no problem with Adams leaving out Defoe, clearly he is a player you would rather see play but tactically it was exactly what we had to do.

The only thing that Adams probably did do wrong was not bringing him on sooner, something he admits to maybe doing wrong: 'I am a big fan of Defoe, maybe it was crazy to keep him on the bench for so long, but next time out it will be different.

'Next time it may be Crouch left out, who knows. We have Wigan at home on Saturday and maybe they will both play.'

I would be amazed if the little and large partnership was not re-united again this weekend against Wigan - who I hope, and have this feeling in fact might, just well feel the brunt of some built up frustration and get a spanking as we look to end a difficult week in a very positive way.

This fixtures also starts a run of games that we must be looking to gain plenty of points from - on paper we could win the lot... at least in the league, the 'small matter' of Milan in the uefa cup might be a little tougher!

==========

Also, reports are growing that Mohammed Taidara - a 19-year-old forward who plays for Paris St Germain - could become his first signing... Any info on his that people have would be welcomed.

Thoughts on all please guys!

I'm digging around on Taidara and will post what I come up with later today hopefully... Re Adams and Defoe I too think it was the right thing to do although I don't think Harry would have done it. If you remember there were a great many debates around the success of 451 and whether we would actually deploy it this year considering Harry had virtually 'promised' JD and Rodney they would play all the time... It's good (irrespective if right or wrong) that Tony is not prepared to be bound by Harry's promises and in some respects with it being JD (Harry's favourite) it sends the right message to the rest of the team.. Tony Adams is his own man ! Good on ya Tony and I hope JD responds by scoring a hattrick tomorrow..

This is what happens when Redknob makes people seem they're untouchable. He promised them they wouldn't be dropped no matter what happened, and look what happened...We get thumped. Enter TA and a tactical decision; and we nearly grab a point. Point proved!

Well said Rug. Tony will be his own man, I'm sure - we should respect him for that. Sometimes he'll get it right, sometimes he'll get it wrong but he'll make decisions that he considers to be in the best interests of the team as a whole.

I am 100% behind Tone on the decision to leave out JD in favour of playing 4-5-1. He has the option to mplay JD on the right of five as well. Taidara is being touted around the French press including L'equipe as being Pompey bound and Taidara quoted as saying there is interest in Spain and England. Recently finished top scorer in a youth tournament. Let Chix fill you all in with more.

Wel done tone...i get an unending impression of honesty about tone at the moment...unlike the other bloke who meets me as my screen saver with Sol and the FA Cup

Tony is our man - he made the right choice to drop defoe, as you just dont want to be playing openly against the side who s top of the league... whoever they are!

Big Ben returns!

There's no doubting how important Davies is to us, we most definitely missed the former Sheffield United man against Orient but Cook's confirmed he'll start against Bristol Rovers.

Winning over the fans

Cook feels he still has to 'win over a proportion' of the fans at Pompey?

Tubbs surprised...in a way he has a point

5-goals in a combined total of 8-matches isn't a bad return is it so having made his move to Eastleigh this week I get Tubbs' point at his surprise Cook wasn't selecting him.

Pompey Predictions League - update no.28

The Pompey predictions league is very much part of this site now! This continued with a defeat to Orient last Saturday.
