Feed Defoe and he will score...

Jermain Defoe showed once again tonight that if you give him the chances, or in this case a chance, he will score goals - as he did for England in a 5 minute cameo against Kazakhstan.

Only David James from our Pompey quartet managed to start the world cup qualifier, and Defoe was the only other Pompey star to get on - but he got on and scored the 5th goal in our 5-1 win. To be fair Emile Heskey had another good game so you can see why he was picked.

As the title says 'feed Defoe and he will score', so I reckon this is the new song that he deserves - it is a case of 'feed the Yak and he will score' for Yakubu, and probably most famously 'feed the Goat and he will score' for Sean Goater, so I say is it not time that this was used for Jermain Defoe?

Off the top of my head I cannot remember how the song goes that he currently has, but what I do remember is I am not overly impressed with it and often tell UKTony, who I sit next to along with his wife, when it is sung 'he needs a better song' - so as simple as it is could we not try 'feed Defoe and he will score'...

It is more than fitting is it not!

Defoe's goal was easily the best goal on the night "Kazakhstan greatest country in the world. All other countries are run by little girls. Kazakhstan number one exporter of potassium. Other countries have inferior potassium."
nodster
Nodster, what DO you mean? Shame on you Rug, wot do you mean when you say Heskey deserved his position. Who scored the goal within 5 minutes of coming onto the pitch? Defoe looked up for it from the minute he was unleashed. You just knew he was going to score. We would have scored 7 goals if he had started.
Gandor
PS: and what would we have scored if Crouchie was with him?
Gandor
i could be wrong, but it that the kazakhstani national anthen according to borat?
pompeyrug
ive not exactly said that heskey deserved his position - i just said 'To be fair Emile Heskey had another good game so you can see why he was picked'... the fella - who im not exactly a fan of - had another decent game and altho maybe not picked on club form merit he was picked on merits of recent england showings to be fair.
pompeyrug
It was a very well taken goal -- but the opposition had given up by then. he had acres of space because Kazakhstan saw no point in tracking back against him
Sindbad
One chance ond goal and he took it really well although Sinnbad does have a point.. but who cares .. another international goal for a Pompey striker ... got to be good for his confidence.

'Feed Defoe and he will score' ..ummm not sure about that one to be honest.. always thought it was a big corney..... Whereas the current Defoe song I think is great and os picking up quite nicely ...
Chix
Defoe... Defoe... Jermain, Jermain Defoe.... When he gets the ball he scores a goal Jermain, Jermain, Defoe.. Now that's what I call music !
Chix
Played the wrong national anthem on the night, I remember it sounding similar to the yank one, just different words, Wes Brown was crap, Jonno would have offered more, upson was bloody awful and don't get me started on Cole!
paultsmouth
What made Defoe look so different was his simple approach. Get the ball and get in the back of the net as quickly as possible. He is scoring goals now and that is quite simply how he does it.

here's a dilema for cappello. In my opinion, England looked so much better after rooney came off, we attacked better, were more direct, and looked like scorring from open play (rather than from freekicks). so, on that basis, I think he should drop our "wonderkid" (aka "shrek", "thug" or "rooney") and play defoe... alongside crouch...
pompeycarpet
very poor showing by most of the team.......wrong 11 from the start....

I don't think theres anything wrong with the current Defoe song, it pretty much sums him up. OK so he doesn't score every chance he gets but then who does. For me the Current song is a lot better than the feed the yak song, that one only works with animal associations.

I think Heskey and Rooney as a partnership is strange. Defoe should've been in there. For either of them.
The_Legend_Of_Zola
heskey missed an easy chance in front of goal, followed by a goalmouth scramble! surely this selection problem when we are winning is a good thing? 11 goals in 3 games and we are criticising the choice of strikers!!! at least we dont have a crisis. look at scotland! their best striker wont play for the scummer, and they had to put chris iwelumo up front!
jbaker
true - however of those goals, heskey hasn't got any, and rooney hasn't exactly shone either. Kazakstan fell to peices in the set plays, when they couldnt defend - better teams wont. The Defoe/heskey patnership in the last 5 minutes linked up better than the rooney/heskey partnership, making you think "why not defoe?" - and the defoe/crouch partnership plays every week. why not play that? Rooney isn't amazing, and should certainly not have a divine right to be in the team.
pompeycarpet
I don't see the point of playing Heskey with Rooney. Heskey is not going to score you a ton of goals, and Rooney is not even an out and out striker. If it were Owen and Heskey, I could understand it more. One out and out goal poacher and another old-fashioned centre-forward type of player. That works. Obviously we're all biased and many of us think Crouch and Defoe would be better, but again, at least it's a proper partnership which makes sense. The people saying we're scoring plenty, we shouldn't complain are right, I guess, but I do have doubts about our ability to score against a really solid defensive side like Italy who will soak up the pressure all day long.
PhilTaglia
good points Phil, time will tell what fabio does wont it - at the moment heskey is fabio's 'favourite' player of his type, crouchy needs to keep plugging away for us and then take his chance with england when it comes and it will be him and one other... crouchy and defoe, if they keep doing the business for pompey will need to be looked at for england...
as for 'feed defoe and he will score' - yep, people are right this isnt very good, what was i thinking?
pompeyrug
You can't knock the fact that we have won 3 qualifiers in a row either, last time that happened was in 1997, and England have never won 4 qualifiers in a row so Capello's method may not get passion into the team but they are winning.
sneakay
Yes I screamed when Defoe scored. A goal for JD is a goal for us at Pompey. Here's hoping to many more.
