UEFA Cup Group Stage Draw

The draw for the group stage of this season's UEFA Cup will take place at UEFA Headquarters in Geneva on Tuesday 7th October at 11.00 BST. There are 40 teams left in the competition and they are allocated into eight groups of five teams. Each team will then play the others in their group either home or away. The top three teams from each group will then proceed to the knock-out stages with the eight third place teams from the Champions League groups.

Teams are allocated to one of five pots based on their UEFA rankings - Pompey are in Pot #4 - and the draw will consist of one team from each Pot being placed into each group. Teams cannot however be drawn with clubs from their own country.

A look at the pots show the strength of this years competition with Standard Liege who eliminated Everton down on Pot 5! Whatever the draw, we are in for some mouth watering games between now and Christmas.

Pot 1

Benfica
CSKA Moscow
Hamburg
AC Milan
Seville
Valencia
Schalke 04
Tottenham Hotspur

Pot 2

Ajax
Stuttgart
Olympiacos
Deportivo
Club Brugge
Spartak Moscow
Paris Saint-Germain
Heerenveen

Pot 3

Rosenburg
Udinese
Feyenoord
Braga
Slavia Prague
Manchester City
Galatasaray
Sampdoria

Pot 4

Pompey
Hertha Berlin
Partizan
Nancy
Aston Villa
Racing Santander
Copenhagen
Dinamo Zagreb

Pot 5

Saint Etienne
Wolfsburg
Standard Liege
Twente (Holland)
NEC (Holland)
Metalist Kharkiv (Ukraine)
Lech Poznan (Poland)
Zilina - (Slovakia)

I can see there will be some groups of death about with those names but qualification is simple IF you win your two home games.

Fancy another trip to Portugal with Benfica or Braga both in different pots? Two decent trips from Pompey are not possible as Nancy and Santander are both in the same pot. What do we think lads and lassies?

Shame we can't play Sydney FC away. I wouldn't have to travel 12,000 miles for that one. That aside it looks like some decent teams will lob into Fratton and aren't they in for a scare. Bring them on. We will SQUASH the Valencia, CLEAN UP Ajax, have BRAGA rights and play TWENTE TWENTE at the same time...
pompeygray
is there a way they determine home or away games, i've seen on other sites that we could be drawn away to teams from pots1 & 3, does anybody know how this is worked out?
pompeyharve61
I think it is done like this - when a team is drawn from the pot it is all randomly given a number from 1 to 5. There is then a format like 1 v 2 and 3 v 4 in week one, 5 v 1 and 2 v 3 in week two etc etc. Hope that explains it.

Don't forget though Dave that you cannot have two teams from the same country in the same group, so no double trips. My group would be Valencia, Olympiacos, Sampdoria, Pompey and Metalist Kharkiv. Away trips to the firt two.
sneakay
sneakay the article does contain that point - in fact our friends at Vital Villa have taken it for their own site - which is nice.

At least 4 more games to look forward too, bring them on

Going to be difficult whoever it is but I'd like Club Brugge away, just cos i love the city, well the old city anyway. Ajax would be good too love Amsterdam as well. but they're both in the same pot Drat!. Anybody will do at home as we've got a great chance against anyone at home.
Steve C
good work dave, but i must be honest i do not really care who we get now - that first ever tie is out of the way and we got through, best of all i was at both legs!
pompeyrug
no return to dinamo zagreb for niko... that could have been fun!
pompeycarpet
had a read through the uefa competition rules about the order of the matches and it's not massively clear I think what eastneydave said is about right, it appears that you get a letter a through e then these are matched up in a particular order.

Can't wait. Would love to go abroad again after a magical time in Portugal. However, forget Turkey, Russia, Serbia type places. We are bound to get at least a couple of teams from local mainland Europe. However it will tough!
storagematt
Can't wait to play against Dynamo Dishwasher and whatever.

I don't want to go back to Portugal. Too much sun, port and superbock is not good for me
UKTony
pot 5: Twente (Holland)... it would be nice to drop in on steve mcclown...
pompeycarpet
Probably can manage one more away trip - would love to go to the San Siro! Don't want Galatasary away for sure. Yes, UKTony wouldn't it be a nightmare to go back to the Porto area, we might even see the gerkin-man again! We don't want Twente at home, that would mean McClown at Fratton Park, and he's not allowed in!
tracyc

tracyc

pompeyrug
