'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Pompey deny 'For Sale' Story

In a statement on the clubs official site, issued just before the win over Spurs, a spokesman denies rumours that the club is urgently looking for a buyer.

The statement reads - 'The press seem determined to speculate on the sale of a number of clubs in the Premier League and have now turned their attention to Portsmouth.

The club's owner has already stated that the club is not for sale but, as with all businesses, should the right offer be forthcoming serious consideration would be given to the proposal.

The financial position of the club is fully audited and is consistent with its peers in the football industry.

The club`s growth and performance over the last two-and-a-half years is evidence of how well the club is managed.'

Earlier this morning the News of the World had run a story under the headline 'Pompey for sale for £20 Million'. The prime reason they gave was that Sasha Gaydamak was struggling with the wage bill that is now 90% of the clubs turnover.

No smoke without fire they say - what do you think boys and girls?

Story after story rolls along, but does it make sense? I shall continue to enjoy the fantastic years we are experiencing at the moment, and start worrying if something other than speculation rears it head. The club I believe is under scrutiny for not acting like so many other foolish clubs, in spending massively beyond their means, and the sale of Muntari, Mendes etc has fuelled the fire. To me, it is wiser to cut the cloth that you can afford. as for how much we can afford, or how far in debt we are, we do not homestly know, so for now lets enjoy our ride, and look forward to a united preparation for Thursday's game. Play up Pompey, Shut up Press

Dave, you are right - no smoke without fire and the smoke is beginning to come in from all directions. There have been some very curious unfolding of events this summer that point to Pompey getting ready for a sale (or maybe attracting a new investor, of course). But as Wakey says, we have other fish to fry at the moment, ie: Portugal on Thursday with our newly revived team! So its onwards and forwards!
Gandor
Live for now, because we have a now. Worry about a tomorrow if it comes.
storagematt
Well I for one have a huge amount of time for Sascha. A superb Chairman. Would hate to see him go, as i think he brings a dignity to the position. Leaves the team to do his talking.

Wakey - how about 'Storie after story' ;)

there are a lot of articles in the Israeli press saying that Arcadi has lost around £100m quid in the credit crunch, and this is why Pompey are in bother. I believe these reports but i also think another owner will be revealed very soon. But whether it is a good thing i am not sure

Any journalist can spurt tripe. It sells newspapers. What the club says is not unusual for any business so until such time I hear something official from PFC I'm not gonna entertain newspaper speculation.. It's unsettling and unnecessary.
Chix
The NOTW never know when to stop do they. It's always good to have a laugh on a sunday morning with the rubbish they print.
.Andrew.
Its in the Sunday Telegraph and Reuters are reporting it as well.
Gandor
Plymouth Graham reading the Jewish Chronicle - whatever next?
eastneydave
Chix, you won't hear anything from PFC until the deal is done, which, at the end of the day is in the best interests of the club and ultimaely us, I suppose.
Gandor
I agree with Penton, Sascha has dignity in a world of suspect chairman. Frattonaussie always said we were mortgaged to the hilt. We have been short of cash for ages, do not forget we had to sell Benji to buy Defoe. What confused us all was the Storrie statements after this deal about bringing in three large signings.
007
ok, so we arnt the richest club in the world. ok, so it looks like we may have to "buy to sell". however I would much rather be in our position than newcastle's, and as has been said many times - at least sascha doesnt meddle in football, so we can get the most out of harry.
pompeycarpet
Sometimes there is smoke without fire, because smoke sells papers. I hope this isn't true, but I have my suspicions it is. But Storagematt & Chix are right, lets not worry about it until it happens lets just enjoy Sunday's win and look forward to Thursday. Off to start packing in a minute.
tracyc
sorry chaps but you're hardly the most attractive proposition when it comes to buying, you're ground puts people off for a start! it'd need a massive investment to turn things around off the pitch!
merlin
Carpet, the inference isn't that we have to sell to buy, the inference is that we have to sell to survive.
Gandor
Merlin, we just hope that someone with a bit of vision comes along with Sacha to invest in us, miracles do happen. Sell nobody else, we need all our stars, otherwise we will end up like Leeds, all that talent they had to sell. As for Benji, he will be back in January, i had a dream about it, he's not big enough for the worlds richest club!!
Owenspompey
Thing is Owens, will Benji ever get a game here now? Not up front I would suggest, possibly on the right of midfield, but would he want that, and would he want to come back to the managemant that treated him so badly?
