Ritchie loaned out to Dagenham

Matt Ritchie, a product of our academy side and a Gosport local who lives within touching distance of Gosport's Privett Park - he also scored a hat trick against them in pre-season, has been loaned out to Dagenham

To be honest I have not seen the fella play - but I have only ever heard good things about him in the reserves and he always seems to feature prominently in reports I read. So if he is good enough why should he not feature in someway in the 1st team squad this, or as is more likely, next season?

The 18-year-old plays on the left side of midfield - which was a problem area but is now an area we are well stocked in - is someone that I had hoped could maybe have a part to play in the 1st team this season and had we not played Chelski in the league cup maybe he would have been used that night? Maybe he still could have been used regardless...

A loan with the league two side will not do him bad at all, as he will at least be playing 1st team football for the next month at least - and this is obviously better than playing reserve football, no matter how much of this he plays.

As I say I have not seen him play so I do not know if he is good enough, but despite the fact that Harry Redknapp has not been overly keen on blooding youngsters with Pompey, as we have so many of them coming though - hopefully - if he, or others, are good enough they are old enough aren't they as the saying goes...

Thoughts on Ritchie and our other youngsters would be welcomed please guys. Is he - and/or others - realistically capable of stepping up to the 1st team in the near future?

I thought he was named as one of the home-growners named in our UEFA squad? If so, how does that work?

I've seen him once this season and was impressed. Good point, though Si; can we have him back when we want?

Seems a good move though especially with the Daggers going well.

Harry brought on Wilson, so he could easily have brought on the lad, could n't have done any worse than Utaka, who yet again seems to play far to deep and then when he gets the ball semms that he dosn't want to take anybody on.

This has to be good for the boy, with Traore and Belhadj in front of him his chances of featuring for us this season look slim at the moment. Of course injuries may change that but while on short term loan his fitness levels and experience will be raised, we will probably be able to recall him if needed.

Given how Wenger has used his Under 19's in the Carling Cup I was disappointed that Ritchie was on the bench on Wednesday - but pleased that he will get first team experience - he may still be needed in the UEFA Cup.

Sorry for typo: should have said 'wasn't on the bench...'

I follow the Academy quite closely and this is a really positive move for Matt who this term has become the pick of the crop above Paris Cowen-Hall.. Others to watch out for Gael Nlundulu, Mark Smith, James Hurst, Nadir Ciftci and Clement Traore (cousin of Armand) but to be honest all reports are positive and we have a really good crop of youngsters coming through .. whether any of them are ready to step up yet I doubt but loaning them out will do no harm at all.. remember Harry loaned a young Jermain Defoe out to Bournemouth a few years back !...

Oh .. as for it affecting the UEFA squad it doesn't matter as he is only on a month loan and although it'll mean he can't be named on the bench next Thursday he is still available for later rounds..

RE Utaka - from the highlights, he doesnt look like he played too badley... so from that I would guest his overall play was poor? becuase he does seem to be picking up his attacking game at last!
pompeycarpet
carpet, I've said before ( I wasnt at this game) but, the highlights just do not show how shockingly lazy he is, not just tracking back, but he doesnt give any body an out ball. He'll always lurk just close enough to a defender, or just not make himself available.

mattie ritchie might have got a look in soon with all these injuries!
